Vacation home or exotic car?

Which should I buy?

Relevant issues

- If I don't buy one of these, I'll just squander the money on something else frivolous (bought over 50 firearms last month alone). I'm an incorrigible spendthrift.

- Outside of mortgage payments, all my bills have been paid off in advance; sometimes prepaid for several years in advance.

- I already have a vacation home and only visited it once in the past five years.

- I already have a GT-R and only drive it 1500 miles per year and 1000 miles on the Porsche.

Are you renting out the existing vacation home? If you're not using it I would consider at least renting it out. Property in general is going to have a longer useful life than a car, but if there's a specific car you really want then maybe I'd go for that as in your case you may actually get more enjoyment out of it.

Me personally I would buy property before an expensive vehicle though but I'd probably be more likely to use said property.

No, I have so much crap in the homes I do use that I can fill another two homes with stuff. I have large screen (65"-75") TVs, MacBooks, high end kitchen appliances, etc. that I haven't even bothered to open for years. I don't like the idea of other people using my stuff.

honestly though you probably should save some money, unless you're going to work until you die or something

A Jeep, so I could go camping. But I wouldnt live in the woods. Just visit.

I got a crapton of camping equipment. Maybe a dozen tents, ten sleeping bags, seven stoves, etc. I also have a Lazy Daze RV but I've thought about getting another one that's smaller and more nimble.

Sounds like you have so much stuff you don't know what to do with it, do you tend to do impulse purchasing then end up not even being excited about it and it just sits? I would consider doing a massive yard sale or something.

Maybe buy a huge motorhome bus. It can be an exotic vehicle and a vacation home at the same time! I don't really like traveling, but if I was to travel a lot this would be my preferred way of doing it. You still have your own space that way and you can remain organized.

Yes, I'll admit years of slickdealing has stuffed my homes with tons of unopened stuff. When I get bored, I start bidding on random stuff on eBay. That's how I ended up with my Porsche. I never stepped foot in a dealership or bothered to even sit in the car. I just put down a bid and ended up winning. Last week, I put down bids on a McLaren. When I didn't hit the reserve, the seller started to lower the reserve! I came pretty close to buying it. Then I figured I should get advice from my fellow ATOT millionaires, so hence this thread.

I would consider doing a massive yard sale or something.

I tried that years ago. I quickly discovered it's pointless. I make enough per hour that I would be better off just spending my time working more than trying to sell stuff.

I'd start collecting land if I was you.

Well I did find 700 acres in Idaho that intrigued me. The government actually pays you $40K a year to not farm that land! I thought it would be cool to build a getaway home there.

Being paid not to farm that is an interesting one. I guess there are too many farms already? I would buy it just for that, 40k per year just to hold on to land? I imagine there must be a catch though?

Been intrigued by a piece of land myself, it's several acres for about 60k and has a 300 foot tower. Would be kind of fun to own something like that. I would want to rent space on the tower to make money though, and I don't know much about that industry nor can I find much info. But I keep considering it. Could do a solar farm too but the transformer station at that place is at capacity according to the hydro site.

IIRC, the catches were these:

1. You had to qualify for a set period of time during which time you got paid. I believe there was like 15 years left on the contract.

2. You had to plant some natural grasses or something to promote the survival of some endangered species.

3. The price of the plot took into consideration that you'd be getting that government money.

That does not sound too bad, depending how much the land actually costs. I find parcels of like 50+ acres for like 20k here some times though it's typically remote access only, ex: boat, helicopter and so on. If I had a pilots license I'd totally buy such land. It's usually for hunting, but it's in unorganized township areas so the taxes are next to nothing and there are no codes or bylaws. It's like the definition of freedom. Of course to live there you'd need a well, septic etc but honestly not a huge deal. I'd do it if I had tons of cash and did not have to work.

if you haven't used your cars and vacation home, i'd suggest travel or simply trying to pick up a new hobby.

learn to sail. learn to fly a plane. whatever. just try new stuff - clearly money is not an issue
