I hear Mieles are good. But they use bags that cost $5/pop when not on sale here and they cost as much or more than Dysons. The German engineering is also a bit worrisome...
Miele upright.
German parts/engineering/assembly FTMFW.
Quietest vac. Built like a tank (designed to last 20-30 years).
And you can get cheap hypo-allergenic bags for it.
As has been said before, Miele vacuums are excellent and shame Dyson in vacuuming power. We have a Miele Twist upright, after suffering with a Dyson Animal. The Dyson was almost worthless at picking up cat and dog hair...we've got 3 cats and 4 dogs. The Miele is just amazing at picking up shed hair with one or two passes. The Dyson, which got returned after a week, never cleaned as well at all. Granted, it was very good on bare floors (and probably should be since it is a British design and the Brits aren't into wall-to-wall carpeting like Americans), but the Miele is no slouch on bare floors, either.
As for the "over engineering" problems....have yet to see any over-engineering at all in it, just well designed and manufactured. True, the bags aren't cheap, but they are true filter bags and they have a closing flap of plastic that seals the bag when you remove it from the vacuum, preventing dust from flying everywhere, unlike the plastic cups in bagless vacs with their static that makes crap stick to the cup. Nasty.
And we've been through Windtunnels and other brands. The Miele is our only choice now. And I doubt our Twist will suffer any failures any time soon. Solid, fairly quiet for a vacuum, bags aren't horrendous in price, esp. from Amazon.
