I got my vacuum at target for $45 bucks. Dirt devil...it sucks. It's been fine for my apartment and no issues. I just hate cleaning out woman's hair from the brushes, that stuff will destroy it one day.

My wife has long hair and there we simply cannot have any vacuum that has ANYTHING spinning on it.

That's how I went thru SHITLOAD of vacuums before ending up with a shop vac (which we like the best).

I thought a shopvac was a pretty silly idea but the more I think of it, a combo (shopvac plus a hoover) seems like a great plan... It's always the hidden nails, hairballs, broken crayon pieces, and random pieces of cat food that seem to destroy my vacuums - shopvac for the debris/upright vacuum for carpets seems like a logical way to go

we have one of these without a folding handle. got it at costco for about 100. best vaccume i have ever owned and the pet attachments actually work. we have 2 blue healer/border collie mixes that shed like mad.
That's essentially what I have. The folding handle makes it nice for storage in a closet as it can tuck under our coat hangers without being in the way.

We were going to buy a more expensive model, but found it at Samsclub as an open box buy on clearance for $65 4 years ago. I confirmed that it had never been unboxed as everything was still in plastic wrap and taped from the manufacturer....was just a busted box.

My only gripe is the attachment holders broke and that the model I have doesn't have the rewind feature....so the plastic part that you manually wrap the cord with broke after 3+ years of use.

I asked a friend with 4' long hair about vacuums (down to thighs when not tied)... She says she goes through one per year and just buys the cheapest ones on sale.

another vote for hoover windtunnel. I have an older one that takes bags that I picked up for $2 at a yard sale that need some minor repair with the level adjustment. has been dependable and works real well. have been real satisfied with it. other than the the height adjustment the only other thing besides bags and belt I've replaced is the beater bar, the bearings went out and it was $20 to replace.

this is with 2 dogs, a cat and a daughter that has long hair. lots of hair.

I've had it for 6 years so far.

I also have a shark stick for the stairs, it breaks down into a hand held with a hose with a beater attachment. I don't use it for anything else.

that why she buys one per year. she'd actually save money if she bought a better quality one to begin with

Possibly. She said she used to buy better ones, then they started dying due to hair and tangling... I'd suggest cutting her damn hair, but I don't think that would go over well.

Or you could spend a few minutes and just cut the hair off the beater bar. That's what I do without Dyson 3 or 4 times a year.

Another vote for Shark Navigator. Bought mine from Costco about 4 months ago and it cleans awesome.

One of their reps showed up at my sisters place :S. The vacuums are actually pretty impressive, but the price on them is D:.

They're like the cutco (knives) of the vacuum world i guess.

Truth right here. A Kirby will last a lifetime. Thing is built like a tank and fixing/parts are cheap. You can find used g4s for fairly cheap and rebuild them if needed.

Granted I never would pay full price for one but my wife had one from before we were married.

I like Electrolux .. even used ones .. - they last forever .. and do a good job

from those kinds (that are not sold in WaMart etc) .. - not crazy about Kirby ... but Filter Queen is not bad.

But Electolux ... I prefer better

Electrolux's bags here in Canada are pretty good price .. i think it's like 10 bucks.. and you get 10 or even a dozen bags for that price .. and they last OK..

Might be and old thread but there's a Dyson DC41 at $199 right now.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/111373624782

Is it worth it at that price? I remember buying one a long time ago but I sold it on Craigslist because I needed the money at the time but it was great. Trying to justify this one lol

Miele upright.

German parts/engineering/assembly FTMFW.

Quietest vac. Built like a tank (designed to last 20-30 years).

And you can get cheap hypo-allergenic bags for it.

I bit on the Dyson. $200 refurb with 3 year warranty and AMEX extended warranty was too good to pass up. Also I could off load it on Craigslist for a profit if I wanted to. Same model is currently going for $300+ in my area.

Regarding Amex extended warranty, you may want to carefully read the terms and conditions.

IIRC refurbished purchases are not covered but I could be wrong.

when i was a kid my mother always had kirby vacuums which are metal housed industrial strengh looking vacuums. i think they were like $500. when i bought my first vacuum i just went to walmart and bought a $49 (i cant remember the brand name, its one everyones heard of). it picked up just as well as my moms kirby's although it was really noisy. it i were getting a vacuum today, id just get a cheapy. most vacuums now are the bagless type, i guess thats supposed to be a good thang

Any thoughts on Oreck? Bagged XLs are pretty affordable and my wife seems to think they're a good brand

my mom bought orecks for rental condos. they were sort of expensive and lightweight, but after a while the handles would bend so that they couldnt be pushed in a straight line anymore. i wouldnt spend a lot on a vacuum esp if youre vacuuming up things like pet hair

I hear Mieles are good. But they use bags that cost $5/pop when not on sale here and they cost as much or more than Dysons. The German engineering is also a bit worrisome...

As has been said before, Miele vacuums are excellent and shame Dyson in vacuuming power. We have a Miele Twist upright, after suffering with a Dyson Animal. The Dyson was almost worthless at picking up cat and dog hair...we've got 3 cats and 4 dogs. The Miele is just amazing at picking up shed hair with one or two passes. The Dyson, which got returned after a week, never cleaned as well at all. Granted, it was very good on bare floors (and probably should be since it is a British design and the Brits aren't into wall-to-wall carpeting like Americans), but the Miele is no slouch on bare floors, either.

As for the "over engineering" problems....have yet to see any over-engineering at all in it, just well designed and manufactured. True, the bags aren't cheap, but they are true filter bags and they have a closing flap of plastic that seals the bag when you remove it from the vacuum, preventing dust from flying everywhere, unlike the plastic cups in bagless vacs with their static that makes crap stick to the cup. Nasty.

And we've been through Windtunnels and other brands. The Miele is our only choice now. And I doubt our Twist will suffer any failures any time soon. Solid, fairly quiet for a vacuum, bags aren't horrendous in price, esp. from Amazon.

Made in USA. Quality is going to be pretty good and they'll stand behind the product because when you call the manufacturer in TN, you can speak with a person about whatever problem you have.

You can't do that with any of the other companies. Even Dyson people don't speak American. I mean, who the hell calls Freedom Fries....."Chips"?
