It's an awful, awful vacuum. Best of luck with it! If you're aruond NYC I'd give you mine for free. It's more of an electric broom than a vacuum and the build quality's sub fisher price

err.. that'd be the complete opposite of every review I've seen online, in CR, etc.

If it sucks I'll take it back, but most people claim otherwise.

People post excitingly the first few days of ownership. CR review isn't that great either. You're buying a vacuum from an infomercial company, I should have known better but the reviews lead me down the wrong path too. The big annoyance is that hair/fibers/dust gathers up behind the filter chamber, so you need to pull out 3 parts to get all of the dirt out (instead of just popping off and dumping the contents). We have 2 cats and the chamber fills up fast. The worst is that it seems to do better on big chunks rather than small grains - our rugs still feel gritty after vacuuming and it takes 3 or more pass overs for a clean feel. It's also really cheaply made with the cheapest of plastic parts. Also, kitty litter particles and this vacuum don't mix well at all. I got my mom a hoover whisper cyclonic based on positive fatwallet experiences - much better build and works nicely, though she does mention it's not as good as new a year and a half into ownership.

So the shark has, as reported, pretty flimsy build quality/feel. That said, it sucks so much dirt/hair up I am still kind of amazed just how much it captured in my place. The pet attachment works awesome in the car too. I'll have to find and update this thread months down the road and describe how it's holding up.

For those of us looking for a good deal, where did you get it from and how much?

I bought two Dyson DC-17 Allergy & Asthma 3+ years ago refurbished at Fry's for $179 each. Both are still going strong (gave one to my parents).

Once one craps out, I will probably replace it with another Fry's refurb deal.

Hoover Whisper, $75 + free shipping at Walmart. It doesn't have many attachments, but you can buy them separately. I got a 12" brush for my Hoover Mach 5 (older cyclonic) for $12 on Amazon.
Yup.
Eureka Airspeed Gold is also another Dyson clone.
Anyone who gets a Dyson when those 2 choices are available has more money than they have sense.

Congrats. That's how we obtained our last dog, she was a lab mix and 4 months old when we adopted her from our local shelter.

We had her for 12 years before we had to have her put to sleep due to medical problems.

You'd be amazed at the kind of pets people give up when they don't realize how much work they can be.

We just took in a big gray stray about 6 months ago. We've been keeping him indoors despite him being outside most of the time prior. He is a beautiful cat but he had injuries from getting into fights so we decided to make him an indoor only cat (along with our other cat). He's pretty vocal too, I'm wondering if that was one of the reasons his previous owners left him. He's very sweet and he is snipped and doesn't spray. Other than the loud crying sometimes he's the best cat.

Sorry, this thread is no longer about vacuum cleaners.

We named him Romeo.

I bought my mom the whisper cyclonic (hoover dyson clone) and, while the suction was great when new, my dad did have to take it apart recently because hair/debris got stuck in the path from the intake to the dirt chamber. In other words, great vacuum for the price but needs more upkeep than the dyson. So it's not about more money than sense, it's about what compromise works for you.

I have Shop Vac we use at home.

Can't beat the $60 price and 5 HP.

Sure it's loud, but you can't beat the price/performance/warranty (lifetime).

PS. it's a Rigid

Even with a Hepa filter you are more than likely spewing dust all over your home.

Not to mention how loud they are.

I looked at one of the Hoover WindTunnels on Amazon, and the photos of the cyclonic chamber resemble my Mach 5. Five years ago, the WindTunnel series had an older design, but I don't know if Hoover updated them with the Dyson clone design.

If the chamber is emptied too infrequently, dust will work its way towards the motor. A newer Dyson design may be better, but it will have similar issues if overfilled.

Last one I bought not too long ago was an Electrolux from Sears, maybe a few $ above your budget, don't recall exactly but I have been pleased with it. One thing you might want to reconsider is the bag less thing. I thought a canister that you could empty would be better than bags myself, I came to learn otherwise. Emptying the container was a freakin' mess, at least with bags, you take them out when full and throw them away.

Agreed.
Not to mention bagged provides an extra level of filtration(the bag), and there is no chance of hair getting into the motor.
Having long hair cats, my old Hoover(I bought one of those WindTunnels thinking it would be convenient) doesn't touch my Miele(granted, yes, there is a small price difference). So much cleaner, less maintenance, and probably better suction anyways.

I did a search and found this thread. We are looking for a new vacuum for our home. We have a mix of hardwood, tile and carpeted floors. All of our friends that own Dysons swear by them.

I stopped by HD to see if they had a 25 on clearance but no luck. I been browsing CL and they have a couple.

We have a Hoover Windtunnel right now which has been good but its loud and heavy.

Not a dyson owner yet (will be the moment my navigator frustrates me again - the damn "lifetime filter" is rusting now - STAY AWAY FROM SHARK!), but woot.com routinely has dysons for $199. Also, overstock.com has some dyson refurbs very affordably priced. I think dyson has an ebay store as well.

We've got an Electralux. My wife ninja'd it about 8 years ago on me for $1200 I was a tad bit upset at the time. But it still runs great, and its got a 25 year warranty.

I got my Dyson on Woot for a good price. Wife loves it.

I had a bagless Hoover vacuum before that, which was horrible.

Before that, I had a Kirby Heritage II. It was insanely loud and heavy, but was built like a tank. I gave it back to my parents, who will probably run it for another 20 years.
