Did Riccar get included in testing?
Any chance you can share the ratings for bagged vacuums?

It's an awful, awful vacuum. Best of luck with it! If you're aruond NYC I'd give you mine for free. It's more of an electric broom than a vacuum and the build quality's sub fisher price
err.. that'd be the complete opposite of every review I've seen online, in CR, etc.
If it sucks I'll take it back, but most people claim otherwise.
So the shark has, as reported, pretty flimsy build quality/feel. That said, it sucks so much dirt/hair up I am still kind of amazed just how much it captured in my place. The pet attachment works awesome in the car too. I'll have to find and update this thread months down the road and describe how it's holding up.
Yup.Hoover Whisper, $75 + free shipping at Walmart. It doesn't have many attachments, but you can buy them separately. I got a 12" brush for my Hoover Mach 5 (older cyclonic) for $12 on Amazon.http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/652989/

It's a "Dyson", except it's not overpriced.
Yup.
Eureka Airspeed Gold is also another Dyson clone.
Anyone who gets a Dyson when those 2 choices are available has more money than they have sense.
I have Shop Vac we use at home.
Can't beat the $60 price and 5 HP.
Sure it's loud, but you can't beat the price/performance/warranty (lifetime).
PS. it's a Rigid
If the chamber is emptied too infrequently, dust will work its way towards the motor. A newer Dyson design may be better, but it will have similar issues if overfilled.I bought my mom the whisper cyclonic (hoover dyson clone) and, while the suction was great when new, my dad did have to take it apart recently because hair/debris got stuck in the path from the intake to the dirt chamber. In other words, great vacuum for the price but needs more upkeep than the dyson.
Last one I bought not too long ago was an Electrolux from Sears, maybe a few $ above your budget, don't recall exactly but I have been pleased with it. One thing you might want to reconsider is the bag less thing. I thought a canister that you could empty would be better than bags myself, I came to learn otherwise. Emptying the container was a freakin' mess, at least with bags, you take them out when full and throw them away.
I did a search and found this thread. We are looking for a new vacuum for our home. We have a mix of hardwood, tile and carpeted floors. All of our friends that own Dysons swear by them.
I stopped by HD to see if they had a 25 on clearance but no luck. I been browsing CL and they have a couple.
We have a Hoover Windtunnel right now which has been good but its loud and heavy.
