vaio srx51p hard drive noise

hey everyone

ive just recently got an srx51p but im a bit worried about the noises coming from the hd!

it seems to be very noisy, especially when i think the drive heads are engaging.

does anyone else have one of these bad boys or have heard of similar problems with other laptops, not necessarily just vaios.

the hd model is a toshiba MK3018GAS 30gig drive.

Yep, I have an SRX99, the harddrive noise is LOUD. Whatever you do, don't install the Intel Application accelerator. it will make your drive VERY quiet, however it will KILL you drive in about 6 months. Read about it on vaio village.

ive pretty much learned to live with it now, still a bit crunchy tho

And ta for the heads up on the intel app accelerator too, id never even have thought to look for it, now i know not to!

What size hdd and is it a toshiba or ibm drive? Both toshiba and ibm 40gb 5400rpm hdds are extremly noisy. I think someone was sleeping for a little bit in qc on them.

I do laptop repairs and end up sending alot back due to failures after a few hundered hours of use on the drive. Just a fyi.

The GAS series are 4200RPM drives with "fluid dynamic bearings", so the drive should be quiet unless Sony designed the laptop with the drive near a surface that broadcasts the operating noise. Keep an ear on the noise and if it gets worse, then report it to Sony. Be thankful Sony didn't put a Hitachi drive in there, they love to use those. Almost all the Hitachi drives I have seen are very noisy.
