Valentine One Radar Detector

I just read Car & Driver Feb. '02 issue which rates this detector above the rest. Anyone here have one? If so, what are your likes and dislikes? I'm thinking about buying one and would appreciate any info-experiences with it before I spend $400 on this piece of magnesium. Thanks.

I would like the version of the valentine 1 I saw in my one friends car. Valintine 1 unit is hidden under the dash, has 4 LED's on the dash displaying valentine 1's info. Has front RADAR detector in the front grill & rear one in the lower right back window (can't even tell it is there really). It's like the complete stelth setup, very nice for a state that doesn't allow Radar detectors (NY).

how much advance warning do these things usually give you?

I've got a couple of friends that swear by them. It's saved them in speed traps where one cop has radar on as a decoy, and another nails you a bit down the road when you think the radar is going off from the first one. If you like to drive fast, it only makes sense, because the cost of a ticket plus rise in insurance cost could easily reach $400.

I was travelling in a pack of cars. I have a V1, my friend has a Passport. Mine went off and I slowed down. She somehow zipped by me. A little more than one half mile later I see her jam on her brakes. Later I asked her why she didn't slow down, she replied that her detector din't go off until she was within 1000ft of the cop. It was a $250 on the spot lesson plus any increase in insurance premiums.

My V1 has kept me out of trouble and my record 100% clean. It pays for itself real fast especially with double traps and areas with lots of motion controlled doors.

Of course no radar detector will match the Mother Nature Mk1 Eyeball and the Cranium CPU. Drive smart, don't speed alone, don't stand out, and don't drive like an idiot. Let your radar detector be a tool but don't be dependant on it. Radar is only one way for a cop to catch you. It does no good if you are paced or caught by VASCAR.

Radar detectors are perfectly legal in NY.

Well said, Windogg, that's good advice.

I used to have a POS $60 Cobra a long time ago, but it broke. I'm not even going to bother buying another unless it's a V1.

The V1 is without a doubt the best radar detector out there. The bogey counter is great, you'll know if its just the usual false alarm or if a cop is sitting there too. Love the directional thing too, so you can tell if the cop is in front or back of you. All in all its the best, and if you can afford it, get it.

I also have a V1 and swear by it but as Windogg said it's simply a tool! Drive smart and the V1 will help tremendously.

I, too, have a V1...it's worth every cent! It's saved me from many-a-speeding ticket.
