Value of CISSP?

I've been working in and around network security a few years now and I'm thinking about sitting the CISSP exam. My biggest question is 'is it worth it'? Its not a cheap test, and the test prep won't be without a degree of cost as well. The key thing here is that I'm not calling out to those that got the cert because they were otherwise barred from a particular position. I'm speaking to those that are already on the job and who went out and got the cert. Bottom line, how much, if any, did your salary increase once you passed the exam?

I have to get it for work too but I do not think there is any real incentive (financial, possibly one time bonus) to get it. Then again, it is just for credibility and I do not feel like it will bring as much as getting my CCIE which does have more incentive to get.

Whoa! 35K?!?! Damn, I was hoping for like a 5-10K increase. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of percentage increase was that to you?

nightout, I'm also looking towards the CCIE:Security, but I'm leaving that for another thread.

Besides, I'm not keenly interested in it at this point as I have to focus on finshing my degree. Speaking of which, that's another reason I'm weighing the pros & cons of the CISSP. If it isn't fiscally worth it to delay getting my degree more then a semester or 2 then I simply won't bother with it right now.

Well there's a lot of CISSPs who don't know jack. Auditing companies like to hire them to audit network security so I run into these guys all the time.

As far as percentage I'd rather not say.

As far as merit CCIE still holds more weight than cissp. But once you have the job it doesn't matter too much. I was thinking about goind the CCIE security route as well but I want to finish up my CCIE routing & switching first.

FWIW...I would finish the degree first and then go for whatever certs you want after that. Certs are great but corps seem to be giving a lot of weight to degrees these days...especially in tight labor markets. Take a degree, some experience and a good cert (CCIE, CISSP, etc.) or two and you will be very employable.
