one thing i will concede.. a single asshat can ruin a LFD game...where its just annoying in most others.. Great to hear Lfd3 is coming.. I hope its not standard Valve time.. I cant wait 3-4 more years.. Oct would be a good time.. surprise announcement!.. i wish..

Were you dying as you... wrote... this?

I never understood why people foam at the mouth about HL3's release.

You KNOW Valve WILL release it. Just give it time and forget about it.

HL1 was a landmark. HL2 was monumental at its time with true free physics. Both graphics and gameplay didn't improve that much today. Making HL3 now would be dumb and fall as just another FPS.

HL3 should be the true next-gen game. Something that requires another ground breaking element.

Just give it another 4-8 years. Without a doubt you know Valve will make it.

Yeah, just like XCOM.

Not familiar with Valve's F2P model are you?

Which model would that be? Not TF2. TF2 went F2P years after it had recouped its initial development costs through traditional sales and then switched to the "pay for service maintenance with hat sales" model. I'll need a better example than that before I change my opinion that all F2P games will have their gameplay fundamentally compromised in order to procure revenue. There's to many games to play and not enough time for me to bother with titles that are doomed by design IMO.

TF2 is a F2P game like it or not now. You get the entire game for free and don't have to spend a penny in the game.

DOTA 2. Entire game is free and the only stuff you can purchase is cosmetic only or keys to unlock chests that have cosmetic items.

Well, I would just like to see the story line continued, not so much interested in some hypothetical groundbreaking element that may never come to pass.

When Half Life 1 and 2 came out, there really wasn't anything like them on the market, and gamers ate it up.

If Half Life 3 came out today, using the same formula as 2, it would be a decent game, but like many other shooters already available. Facial movement and speech, physics, presentation and story; these are all now common in games. Half Life's story alone is NOT enough to make a great game; in fact, Half Life's story was great because of the package it was wrapped in.

Valve wants another genre defining installment to get the newest generation of gamers hooked on the franchise, and as a gamer that is what I also want. I don't want more of the same; I want that next game that blows me away, and if it takes 20 years, so be it.

Played too much BF3?

I'll admit L4D2 has less "natural" movement than some other shooters but I've never had any issues.

one of Valves strong points.. gameplay first, not to much of there stuff is hyper realistic.. Though I'm not sure more realistic movement would have hurt L4D, I agree, its not bad the way it is. I know a quick (did i say quick) game of ARMA reminds me painfully how realistic often harms fun..

Dont forget the facial expression tech they developed for HL2. That was, and still is, amazing tech. Even today, 12-13 years later, hacks have to use facial motion capture to rival what Valve did.

I bet L4D3 is F2P as well. They have had enormous success with it with TF2 and Dota 2 and L4D3 is a game that can work very well as F2P.

I hope so. If it is F2P hopefully that will mean more servers (hopefully fewer modded servers; blech) with more people at all times of day. L4D2 can be pretty dead at times.

Yeah my gaming buddies have become real cheapskates lately so if a game launches free I know I can get them to join in, otherwise I have to wait for a big sale.

Gabe Newell actually confirmed development of Source 2 a long time ago (about a year ago I think). He said it would be debuting with a brand new game. L4D3 it is then.

well what else would they release it with but a game????

if they said brand new game like you say, then I would expect a new IP, not a thirdquel.

Exactly. Which is exactly why his post, if made in seriousness, was so asinine it didn't merit a response.

Eight more years? I mean, really? HL2 Episode 2 came out in 2007. That's 6 YEARS ago. I mean, get real.
On top of that, Half Life is a very plot-driven, character-heavy FPS. This isn't Battlefield or CoD. The plot and characters matter. ESPECIALLY with the way Episode 2 was ended in the cliff hanger style it was.

That's not say it wouldn't be a great game 20 years from now and fans would still love it, but it clearly loses something as an IP, and as a marketable product when by that time there'll be a whole group of gamers who never even played HL2, and another group that doesn't even remember why they should care.

If HL3 came out tomorrow I don't think I'd even bother paying full retail. There are too many FPS games these days and even too many FPS games with great atmosphere and story like Metro 2033/LL. IMO Valve had their chance 5 years ago and blew it. Aside from Steam Valve is nothing to me. That's just my opinion after playing Far Cry 3, Crysis, Metro 2033, Borderlands etc etc. There are too many FPS games out in the market and I don't feel that HL3 would stand out enough to matter to me.

this is exactly it and why I have assumed for so long there has been no hl3 as of yet. Valve definitely doesn't just want to release another good half-life game like episode 2. they want to create another revolutionary game and would probably release nothing before they released another game that's more of the same.

It won't be F2P. If you can't pony up $50 (most of us find deals for less than that even) for a game that will give hours of entertainment, go get a job.

Great news OP, <3 L4D.

I really do think it will be F2P though. It firsts perfectly for it, multiplayer only game, has potential for tons of cosmetic stuff. Valve is raking in the cash with their F2P model and everyone likes it since they give you the entire game and continue lots of support.

L4D1 was an awesome game... as long as you had three other friends to play with, which I fortunately did.

L4D2 was okay, I am not a fan of the characters, music, or the special infected from the 2nd game, but the melee weapons were nice.

l4d1 I can agree it started great. Even made some friends via it when initially released.

l4d2 was definitly a side step, then adding back in features that were removed from #1 (melee) while charging new game price was enough to poison the game in my mind.

I still played it, but only with friends. The randoms I find are just not worth playing with. VS's in #2 I just did not do.

If #3 is an improvement over #2 as #2 was over 1, I expect the following

l4d3 = l4d2 + skins + hats + exclusive (bought) weapon skins

so yes, if it is what they are going to be pushing, I am not going to be expecting anything great.
