Good deal, for sure! Just remember...

Valvoline SynPower is NOT synthetic oil - it's just 'cracked' mineral oil - same as Pennzoil Platinum and Castrol Syntec.

If you want REAL PAO/Ester based synthetic oil, you'll need to go with Mobil 1, Redline, Motul, Silkolene, et cetera...

Must be a west coast thing, never heard of any of those. Will try my local AutoZone and Advance auto though.

Oil is crazy lately with many dropping zinc etc. essential for older cars. Rotella T dino oil is starting to look pretty good to me, still SJ real oil about $10/gallon at walmart.

Castroc Syntec, the one made in Germany available at Autozone (Say's OW-30 EUROPEAN FORMULA), make sure on the back it says "made in germany" is fully synthethic.

They also have one that says European Formula now formulated in the US <-- don't choose that one.

Zinc is an extreme pressure additive - and EP additives are essential to ALL cars!

The problem with zinc is... it borks catalytic converters!

A few years ago, Mobil 1 took zinc out of the formulation (for this very reason) but Top Fuelers started blowing cranks/rods like popcorn!

At their request, Mobil 1 started looking for a replacement for zinc, which would satisfy the drag race community. They found it in an existing Mobil product - an EP/anti-wear additive used in gear lube, e.g. SuperSyn.

A year later, they started adding SuperSyn to all Mobil 1 synthetic oils - not just the special formulation for 8000 HP funny cars/rails...

SOURCE

What's the overall benefit of Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology?

Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology exceeds the latest industry and OEM requirements. It is designed for vehicles under warranty and will provide protection for the maximum oil change interval recommended in your owner's manual or by your oil life sensor.

The overall goal for Mobil 1 has always been to protect your engine, even under the most severe conditions, such as cold starting temperatures, extreme high-temperature operations and high-load conditions. Mobil 1 has been formulated with a performance reserve to provide you the peace of mind that your engine is protected during these severe conditions. But Mobil 1 with SuperSyn is not just for extreme service. You can also realize Mobil 1's benefits of improved engine cleanliness and extended engine life under "normal" service.

So...

If you're worried about whomever taking your zinc away... just go with Mobil 1 synthetic! End of problem!

So, is Molybdenum Disulfide what is being used in the place of zinc?
Molybdenum Disulfide makes the toughest grease and gear lube!

Very good!

In my earlier post, I was going to tell ppl that Valvoline SynPower, Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Syntec, et cetera are Group III oils, but I didn't feel like going to a lot of trouble for a 'Hot Deals' thread.

Anyway, since YOU went to the trouble...

If you're interested in 99-cent/qt 'cracked' oils, check out the Group III oils in that link - that's what you'll be getting - NOT true synthetic oil...

Nah! Forget that moly stuff... greases and gear lubes are a totally different ballgame!

If I remember correctly, Mobil had some sort of synthetic EP they were using in their synthetic gear lubes, and decided to try it in their synthetic motor oil - and it worked better than their wildest dreams! It solved the blown cranks/rods for drag racers - and everyone else wanted it too, when they found out what Mobil was doing - so Mobil added it to their regular Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil.

Anyway, I skimmed through that article and the guy pretty much aced it.

For manual trannies (transaxles), I use Redline MTL or MT90, depending on the season - nothing beats it - dittos for their motor oil, but I can't afford using Redline motor oil! Gotta buy it at a local $peed $hop.

I use Mobil 1 - available at every store in America!

For mineral oil, IMHO, nothing works better than Chevron Delo 400 and Shell Rotella T - never tried Mobil Delvac 1300, and don't plan to...

So, he basically got it right!

I'm also a fan of Castrol GTX - an ancient (but time-proven) offshoot of Castrol GTR racing oil. Whatever! Nobody's perfect...

I use the Shell Rotella T (the stuff in the the blue container) in my '00 RoadStar.
It is good stuff. (Actually, I also use it in the Silverado - as in the 327)
