When it comes to lone wolves I'd definitely say that mental illness is predicative for why they feel compelled to commit these acts of terror. And I'll call it an act of terror for the same reason it might be described as a hate crime. It's a sort of political violence targeting another group of people. Simple terror without an organization directly involved, but still terror.

To try and move away from the specific linguistical struggle... I'd like to focus on why it happens, and I've a theory involving partisanship, the human condition, and tribalism. We're doing far too good a job of hyping up the age old "Us VS Them" in our society and unstable folks are going to feel vulnerable to this messaging and act out their fears. If the man wants to "kill Muslims" we need to know why, down to a root cause.

You'll find his cause in the media this man has consumed. As a society we need to open a very large discussion on how to handle modern communications and the negative affects it is having on our primitive minds.
