I'm debating on what graphics card to buy for my upcoming system build. I'm thinking either a $190 msi radeon 9800 pro 128mb or gooing for a cheap 6800. I'm just wondering which cheap 6800 to buy if i decide to go that route. Considerations include performance, price, and included goodies. I don't want to spend more than like $270. This is for moderate gaming, plus normal word-prosessing, photo editing, and web browsing.
Thanks a ton, Sam

I just now placed my order for a eVGA 6800 from Newegg for $283. I had a hard time deciding between the 9800 Pro and the vanilla 6800. Ultimately I decided that, even though I have an older motherboard, I want the 6800 for several reasons...

1. It has more upgradability than the 9800 Pro. So even if my mobo is the bottleneck (VIA KT266A chipset, with an Athlon XP 2400) the card will last me a couple years and provide great performance when I upgrade to an Athlon 64 solution.

2. The 6800 supports more of the upcoming graphics technology than the 9800 Pro.

3. The included copy of Far Cry from eVGA is a nice perk--figure that if I had purchased Far Cry, that just saved me $50.

Good luck... I think that even though the performance of the 6800 is less than the GT or Ultra models it is a great option for people trying to decide between the 9800 Pro and the vanilla 6800. There was a thread recently where people argued for like 7 pages about which one to get, the 9800 Pro or the 6800. You can read that thread at the following link:

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Yeps, I was just looking at a bench for the new mainstream GF-6600 GT video card. Got over 8000 points on 3DMark2003 (if that even matters) Plus it is supposed to be SLI enabled. And have full PS3.0 support. Looks like the 6600 GT will be $199 Retail, and the3 regular 6600 will be $149 Retail. They both have 128Bit memory interfaces. The GT version will have 500mhz(1000mhz GDDR3), the regular will have a 128Bit memory interface and have 300mhz(600mhz DDR1) memory. The GT version seems to perform quite well.

Interesting!
When does this come out, and about where on the scale will this be compared to 9800 pro, 6800, etc?

NO, wait for the 6800GT's to get down to the $300 range like they originally were when they first came out. BTW where are any legit 6600 benchmarks at?

I got a Leadtek A400TDH the other day, and I'm pretty happy with it. I get almost 9000 points in 3DMark '03 running the card @ stock speeds... haven't tried overclocking it yet.

Although I have no idea what this card goes for in the US though, seeing as I reside in SA

what's with upgrading evga cards??? Do they offer a buyback or something?? also, i can't go to the 6600, because it seems like it will be available only as PCIe, not AGP 8x, and i'm hopefully gonna be running a AMD athlon64 300+ based system.
