It seems there is a problem with a screw touching the PCB of the unit. Thats why their shorting out. Try insulating it with a paper washer or the like.

This thread may help some of you out.

Grrr. I noticed that screw overlapping when I was first inspecting the unit, but figured "oh, they've got smart engineers who would have made sure that wasn't a short". Now my unit's in and running, so I'm a little hesitant to open the case again.

Look for the "update" part and youll see how they fixed the housing. Maybe that caused some problems for people. My unit has had that update. I have 2 fans hooked up to one channel and it seems to be working fine. When i get some 3 to 4 pin molex connectors ill look up my other fans. My only problems is that geiger counter sound, but i dont hear it much. I havent smelled any smoke or anything so i think its working just fine.

I had one of them and noticed it worked fine with all 4 fans unless it was in my case or touching metal. I returned it the next day and got the LCD Nexus. This thing is great BUT, I can only control one fan and it beeps Loud for no resin some times. The Temp gauge is about 4c off but that is ok at least it is consistent.

Anyone considered sueing them? I mean seriously, their faulty producted caused the death of several CPU's here from the sounds of it. That's a hunk of change for many people. They should be held accountable for selling a product that destroyed the system that it was place into.

I really really really wish i had found this thread before getting mine. I've had the same problems as everyone else. Hooked one 80mm fan to each port , switched it on, and within a couple minutes, "CRACK"........smoke coming out of my case. The thing was completely fried. I could see the melted parts on the pcb. Very disappointed........At least newegg will replace it.

Wow I am glad I read this right after I ordered it. I can call and cancel my order tomarrow. I was planning on having 4 x 80mm TT Smart Case 2 fans up to 3 of the ports and a Vantec Tornado up to the 4th control. I will wait and see if positive reviews start coming out about newer versions of this model or just all in all a different driver controller. Let us know what works then.

I've been using the Sunbeam rhoebus for weeks now and it's been a rock. Even have my cpu fan on one channel.

It's far better made than the vantec version. Though it would have been nice had sunbeam included at least two 4-3 pin adapters.

btw Rat, don't look into those led lights! You'll have temporary blindness.

Mine came from svc.

I didn't realize there were 2 different versions. Mine has the 3-pin mobo type connectors. And it's hard to find the proper adapters so I had to make mine. If most of your fans have the 3 pin connectors then it's no problem. Unless the wires aren't long enough.

Shipped the same day as the order. Ill get it next week.

Cant be any worse than the Vantec POS, thats for sure.

Ok I'll share my experiences regarding this product.
1. Has been running 36 hours so far. Working fine.
2. Have 2 80mm LED case fans and a Thermaltake Smart Fan II hooked on it.
3. Buzzing does occur occasionally but does not consistently occur.
4. I got mine from sidewindercomputers.com. Check them out, they are top 10 @ resellerratings.com. Good merchant IMHO.
5. I'll try to give you guys an update if you guys are interested.

Mine has been working fine for a couple months now. I have the CPU, rear case, side 120 mm, and power supply fans hooked up to it. I does make a slight buzzing, but I figured that's typical of a rheobus. It makes less noise than my Linksys router does.

Your linksys router makes noise? Now that is odd, assuming you have a regular cheapy 4-8 port one like most of us.

It always makes this electrical high pitched whine when plugged in. I put it in one of the cabinets of the desk to keep my sanity. I have done this since it was brand new. It also gets fairly warm to the touch. It's the BEFSR41 router/4-port switch.

I too have the Sunbeam version 2. It's great, but the LEDs are way too bright. It lights up my whole room

I have 2 front intakes on one channel, exhaust, blowhole and CPU fan (TT Smartfan2) on the other 3 controllers. Hardest part was extending my fan wires to reach it, which wasn't hard at all. So you can get the idea that the entire install was a piece of cake.
