$700+ for a 300mm2 die, only suckers pay the nvidia tax.
If mm2 is all that counts, what do you think the NAND chips in an SSD cost per mm2? Or your DRAM?

I dont think NV expects 980Ti users to upgrade. They have already stated numerous times that they target and show benches from the previous gen ie; 780 in this case..
No hbm2 for Nvidia 1080ti?
Based on memory bandwidth one the card is a failure! /sarcasm
Why people use that one metric I don't get. Interesting to see if a ddr5x 1080ti would top vega with hbm2. Just to again prove people that it's the whole card and not silly memory bandwidth Ina vacuum that determines performance
http://videocardz.com/60923/galax-overclocks-gtx-1080-to-2-2-ghz-on-air-2-5-ghz-with-ln2According to Mad Tse, the 8-pin power connector design on reference design is not really a limitation for overclocking. The reference board is using different components than custom designs. MAD points out that reference cards are most likely using locked BIOS. He also mentions that his card was using increased voltage up to 1.3V, which is not possible on reference cards.
While the 2.5 GHz clock he achieved using LN2 cooling is already impressive, it’s not really as important as the clock achieved using air-cooling only. GALAX HOF GTX 1080 is supposedly able to overclock up to 2.2 GHz, without any extreme modifications.
However it is uncertain if NVIDIA approved this card design and its unlocked BIOS, so we don’t know if retail cards will be able to achieve similar frequencies.
Should I sell my MSI 980ti 6g and get a 1080 ?
The upgrade price would be 180 for the same brand and cooler type card.
Will the 980ti devalue even more in the commng weeks ?
The throttling only happens if you don't push the power envelope higher or leave fan speeds at stock settings on the FE edition. If you use a custom fan profile you don't throttle. Also the 1080s aren't having any issues rendering things correctly in games. If you are talking about the AoS demo, you have to realize that there will still be driver updates/changes and the fact that it looked better then the amd card whether or not it rendered the snow "correctly" in one demo. The rest of the games benchmarked around the world had zero issues.

Correct. If you just drop the card in and leave it alone, you will see some thermal throttling of the boost clock after intensive gpu load because the fan speed doesn't go up high enough to keep it cool.
If you simply use any program, like evga precision, msi afterburner etc, or whatever is currently supported for fan speeds. Up the fan speed to 60,70,80% depending on your ambient/case temps, you won't have the throttling issues at stock speeds.
If you want to overclock as well, you can as long as you push the fan speed and power envelope. These chips get anywhere from 2050 boost clocks to 2.2 boost clocks depending on the silicon lottery.
The FE cards aren't terrible by any means, however the aftermarket cards coming from all of these different companies will have much better cooling and should allow for zero thermal throttling at stock settings. As for overclocking the aftermarkets, we will have to wait and see when they come out, but they will also be able to achieve the same 2 to 2.2 range with the proper cooling and voltage.
But for review purposes it'll be reported by most sites as not throttling and the noise curve will be worse for those who want to stop the throttling.
Do you think it's the proper way to distribute something that you need to do modifications to make it run as advertised? And then you don't know whether or not the noise is going to be acceptable until after you buy it. Especially when they marketed it as a new and improved high quality cooler that you were paying an extra hundred for?
Considering no review sites reported the missing snow (and please don't try and spin that as better in any way) what makes you so sure there aren't any other rendering issues. Not that anyone is claiming there is. But you decided to mention it for some reason.

So it looks that 8-pin connector isn't an issue with overclocking 1080...

Question is if there will be available unofficial unlocked BIOS for reference cards
It's well known, reviewers should be aware of this and a single mouse click in the Radeon Settings will turn that behavior off permanently. Not exactly the same if you ask me.AMD is cheating in the Witcher 3 with Hairworks. Why do you have now a sudden problem with nVidia and Ashes?

Pretty sure the resale value of the 980ti will tank once 1070 hits. I would definitely go ahead and do it if all you need to pay for the upgrade is €180.
