GM200 will always scale better than GP104 as it has been the case in the past too.GK104 was not a good ocer either which was later trounced by GK110.IIRc NV's last midrange good oc chip was GF104. This is not a 980 TI replacement and NV isn't saying that either, I bet when GP102/100 comes to desktop market we will have another monster ocer in the room

The key is you don't want to hit 60FPS, you want to average 60FPS. What is the point if your FPS dip down to 30FPS or less.

I buy hardware because I like buying hardware. I also set aside money yearly for this. I've been doing this for over 10 years. Old habits are hard to break.

If it isn't your cup of tea, that's all fine and dandy, but don't see why you think I'd be sorry for buying something I want.

A GPU is just not all that expensive in the scheme of things. You don't need to be making $$$ to be able to put aside ~$1k/year for upgrades, less if you sell your old stuff. It's just a matter of prioritizing it and being disciplined enough to save for it.

We're not talking Maseratis here.

It'll be 20% at most. You won't notice the difference in games (670 SLI, OC'ed 980 and 290 were no different to me), but you'll miss the $700.

You do realize he'll be able to get ~$400+ back once he sells the 980 Ti, right? $300/year in GPU upgrades is pretty reasonable, esp. if you game a lot.

Me? I game a lot (as time permits anyway), so I stay up to date on hardware, it's worth the $ to me.

Speaking of SLI, or more like having 2 cards, i have a quick question....

i thought i wont ever be going SLI/multi GPU again (unless affordable dual GPU card would pop-up, because of my mobo layout, where i need to have the cards one right next on top of another....something i dont want to try ever again. However, never giving a thought to a water-cooled hybrids, i now realized, if i bought one card (1080) cooled this way, i could perhaps stick another one (air-cooled) right underneath and it could actually not to be that hot and loud... Still, the hybrid has the blower fan on VRMs anyway, would that one run way louder with another card right beneath it? Or will the difference be negligible? And then the bottom card, should it be blower design, or can i go with custom design with axial fans, if this card wont be obstructed and have a free space underneath?

yep, the custom models will start appearing as we near June 1st, and they're showing a dual 6PIN power connectors on the EVGA. that is interesting and confusing at the same time...the card has an extra 6PIN for overclocking but down to 6PIN from the original's 8PIN connector?

maybe more premium models will have 8+6.

AtenRa: Thanks for the links. I have an EVGA GTX 980 TI SC and have been very Pleased with it. In fact it "battled" with the Fury X to be the single card to replace the twin R9 290s I now have in my 4790k rig.

The GTX 1080 fascinates me. I know there will be faster cards down stream from Nvidia and "someday" AMD. The problem with AMD is the same old song. Just wait a little longer and you will have a "better" card.

In the case of Fury X it "might" equal or slightly surpass a stock GTX 980 TI now but the decision for a single card was a year ago.

This year I wanted to "retire" my 2 R9 290s for a single card in the 4790k rig (actually move the GTX 980 TI to the 4790k and the new card to the 5960x). Been told to "wait for Vega. GOD LORD. Polaris isn't likely to be out til mid to late summer and it sure doesn't look like a barn burner.

As I age (65) I revert back to songs I grew up with to express my feelings. I've loved AMD as the upstart who stood up to and beat Intel since my AMD 386-40 days but the "wait till Vega" theme is getting a little old when the GTX 1080 seesm like a decent candidate.

BTW: This link is a great song about "Wishin and Hopin:

Gigabyte will unveil xtreme edition on 27th..https://twitter.com/GIGABYTE_VGA/status/735763788947804162

Acc. To vidcardz - http://cdn.videocardz.com/1/2016/05/GIGABYTE-GeForce-GTX-1080-XTREME-GAMING.jpg

The right end fan is going beyond the pcb. If this is true then I thnk its not a custom pcb. They just took reference pcb n slapped the cooler on it. I hope thy've at least added better power design for better overclocking.

Others will follow soon I guess.

They all seem to be released the 27th. If its for sale too is another question.

I think they are unveiled on 27th. They will go sale in June (during or after computex) right now all the emphasis is on founders edition and gpu blocks.

There are a few games where I can't hit 4K@60, but I hit 55. 55*1.20 == >60.

So I got that going for me

I'm not you. To each their own.

He (IllogicalGlory) really does not want you to buy a GTX 1080. It almost seems his desire to see you not buy it is greater than your desire to buy it.

UPDATE 2: We have posted new pictures of EVGA ACX 3.0 cooler here. We also decided to remove old pictures as they were proven to be fake.

The new pictures seem to show a single 8-pin connector.

What is the problem with two 6PIN connectors? It's ok.

Of course it is. I hate seeing NV rewarded by 980 Ti owners for producing a card that's more expensive and not anything close to a worthy successor (and it doesn't need to be as an 04 card). $700 for 10 FPS? Why would anyone do that? Just turn down settings, pay nothing and notice nothing. It's the same effect (nothing), but for free.

And maybe when the time comes for a 980 Ti successor to be released, and railven along with enough other people have decided that 04 cards aren't worth $700, you'll get something more for your money, and so will the rest of us.

Spend the $700 on a nice 1440p G-Sync display, or an Ultrawide display, put it toward an OLED TV, or an Oculus/Vive or another 980 Ti or 12 AAA games. Way more value, you'll notice something rather than nothing, and apart from that, they're just great toys (or at least, they have a chance of being). The 1080 isn't. It overclocks 10%, has GDDR5 and looks like a 980. Building a whole new $700 PC would probably provide more enjoyment, even if it's not practical.

railven doesn't want the 1080, nor do any other 980 Ti owners, they want a finfet card that destroys the 980 Ti. The 1080 is not that, and once they get the 1080, they aren't going to come to any other conclusion. It's going to be a disappointment. Why not just wait and get a satisfying upgrade instead? When the 1080 Ti comes around, it'll be a disappointing 20-30% upgrade. You'll never get that experience of popping in a new truly powerful piece of hardware again. I remember when I replaced my 6670 with a that was great I got to play at 60 FPS for the first time ever. I remember buying a 144Hz monitor and playing a game at 100 FPS. That was amazing too. What I don't remember is replacing my two 670s with a 980, or replacing my 144Hz monitor with a 1440p 60Hz one. When I get a GP100 or a Vega, I'll remember that and I'll be happy (or maybe I won't because I barely ever play new games).

NV can of course price whatever product they want at whatever price they want, but I'd like to see people stop buying cards just have the latest numbers in their sig. It isn't worth it.

Yup I don't get why people act like videocards are so expensive sometimes. Cut out a couple of your game purchases. I've seen people with hundreds of games that they haven't played and a low end gpu. That's far worse to me than a person buying high-end gpus every year. At least you use your gpu whenever you game. You don't use your whole unplayed steam library

Well said, totally agreed.
