VB6 or .NET??

Hey all,
I'm in the process of learning VB6, but I'm not sure if I should be using 6 or .NET. It would be very basic programming for some small applications, that will retrieve data from either MDB, or MSSQL. Also an app that retrieves reports in crystal report format. Now, our concerne is if VB6 will still be supported in the future, and if you can do the same with .NET that you can with 6? I am under the impression that the two are meant for two different things, but im not 100% clear! Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated!

Just like you, I am looking at getting back into VB programming. Unfortunately, I have never done any VB programming before (my background is in Pascal).

FYI, I choose VB6 Pro over VB.NET.

I'm not a VB programmer, but I would say that you CAN do the same with .NET that you can do with VB6....

The .NET version just gives you a way to use the .NET framework if you choose, which lets you do a ton of other junk... most of which I haven't bothered to figure out yet. Heck, just figuring out what .NET is supposed to be seems to be a challenge for just about everyone, including Microsoft.

Learning VB is learning VB... whether you use 6 or .NET, it will be the same. The .NET portion of the show will be a new learning experience no matter which way you go, so I would suggest that if you just want to learn VB, stay away from .NET for the time being. I'm fairly sure you can do this with either version, as in, you don't need to use .NET framework if you have VB.NET, you can just create a regular ol' VB application. Go with whatever version is handy and/or cheaper.

As a note... I believe there's an upgrade version of .NET available for owners of VB6 Pro... maybe a possible upgrade path for the future... something to look into anyhow.
