I would like to be able to see what the last time was that a user logged in, as we can now. I don't remember seeing this feature on vBulletin forums. It is a helpful feature for the FS/T forum.

Absolutely NO to deleting your posts. Perhaps locking or moving posts, but there needs to be very strict regulation on this!

Yes!

If inline pics are enabled, file size needs to be regulated, and I like the idea of using javascript to see the picture only when you click on a small link. Obviously filtering needs to be in place.

inline images should be an option. If you leave it unchecked, images will simply appear as links.

A photo album for each user is not realistic. There are almost 200,000 registered members (Granted - not all are active) on the forum. Even if each user was allotted 10mb's for that photo album, that is already 2TB of data, not counting EVERYTHING else.

Agree

NO REP SYSTEM. All that will happen is that it will become a pissing contest to see who can get the highest or lowest rep.

Yes! A rep system would be awful.

No ebucks or any of all these other things that you build up points and buy.

Also awful

Working code parameters (It is aggravating to have HTML parse through code for an array and make everything italic or bold or something).

Yes!

No custom avatars and no pictures in sig. Allow custom sigs the way they are - I don't need a person's entire photo album popping up every time I open a thread.

Yep

I really like the plugin that was mentioned earlier that combines posts inside a certain time span - great for bumps and what not.

Agree

If there are more smileys - please, please, please not the animated ones. I hate seeing the smiley army walking around in a post all the time.

Agree

Perhaps some benefit for Elite Members and Lifers - but I don't like the idea of "prizes" for posting a ton of stuff.

Meh

No ignoring users; however, ignoring certain forums is a good idea.

Agreed

A lock on the L&R forum or a sub-forum of L&R. There are some pretty explicit threads in there that young children who might post here have no business seeing. Request permission from a moderator for access to that particular sub-forum. Everything outside of that forum must be kept clean.

No way. The mods already lock things that are too ridiculous. There's nothing int here that "young children" (>13) haven't already heard about or thought about.

I was a big fan of the word censoring - though that is not everyone's slice of cake. Don't block the words, but use asterisks or something in place. It just makes it nicer to read a post where, although someone may be pissed, I don't have to read through the dictionary of curse words to figure out what they are saying.

Make it an option, just like inline images.

Keep the forum professional looking above all! AT forums are a great place to not only hang out and talk about whatever is on your mind, but a great place to learn - lets keep it that way!

By far the most important thing. I keep coming back to this place because the look is clean and there aren't 10,000 custom animated avatars and images in people's signatures. The color schemes are nice and, generally, Anandtech is one of the more professional feeling forums on the internet.

My only additional recommendation would be to echo another idea. I'd love to have a "best of" subsection where users could vote for the best threads. It would give more continuity to the life of the forum.

I'd also like to see a thread somewhere where the mods post what they've done. When they ban a member or issue vacations, it would be nice to see a brief description of the offense and how long people are going to be gone for. That will eliminate a lot of the "did xyz get banned?!!?!?" threads.

If I write a plugin that turns all of our posts in to Harcadio posts, can we have it installed? For example, any time anyone starts a word with h, the h is removed. So, "here" would be changed to 'ere.

I think that some of the features should be enabled/disabled by forum. I.e., to disallow editing after some time span should not be in place on Distributed Computing because we have numerous threads that get the OP updated regularly for stats on different projects in which the TeAm is involved.

A feature that is really needed on the DC forum is the ability to create and display tables for the stats to keep the columns aligned.

I like the multiple quote idea.

I am not familiar with vBulletin's PMing method, but something like we have now is fine.

I second this. Support for tables will be a big plus in the Programming forums also. It will make it easier to explain and understand SQL-related issues.

No rep system. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a decent mobile version, ocforums has a good one. Yes to user avatars and sigs. But make it a zero tolerance policy with a two week vacation for violators.

You know I absolutely love the current forums. I wish you guys wouldn't change.

If it has to go I'd say what I like most is the quick navigation using the left sidebar. Second thing I like is how compact everything is...hard to say what I mean...vBulletin wastes a lot of vertical space, FT and AT's current setup does not.

I also love being able to browse the entire thread (without having to click next for pages).

Since a lot of people only seem to dwell in a select few forums, that would get a thread far more coverage.

I think Barack Obama once posted a link to such a forum and it looked pretty neat.

Could have pretty useful implications: like a thread tagged both Hot Deals as well as Off Topic (for more exposure if it warrants it). Or maybe a PC game issue that might be related to both the Video Card driver and/or a OS issue.

Is this something that can be 'added on' or would require the forum software to be built from the ground up to support it?

Yep this is a great idea, the forum I posted before was:

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=80

Does anybody know any plugins that can do this?

Because this will solve the whole too many subforums debate!!

I never knew we could 'tag' a thread. I do it with my bookmarks, and I know how wonderful a feature this is. I support this as well.

A couple things I'd like to suggest:
-A flag option to automatically ask the mods of a given forum to review something. I'm not sure if its a built in feature but to flag and relay a comment as to why it was flagged would make it so that users might consider policing forums themselves anonymously (False flags result in bans by that person, specific requirements for flagging)
-In the title bar, I'd like to see the OP's user name. It would make following the topic a little bit easier.
-iTrader 2.0.1 looks like an interesting plugin to have AT have their own rating system rather than relying solely on heat
-There seems to be a plugin for earning points towards contests and such. I know AT tried this a while ago and it didn't really work out so it was discontinued.

I like that first one especially. This is the only forum I go to that doesn't have that feature actually..

Rating system - bad idea. Waste of time for something that just turns into a game.
User deletable/lockable threads - bad idea. We would have way too few "ownage of the year" nominees.
Locking edit after 3 days - bad idea. It's great not having to scroll through pages of posts to get updates to the OP. I think if this is implemented, it will be a massive pain in the ass.

Mostly, I just want the same features/functionality as FuseTalk, with the bugs fixed. I like the clean look of these forums, the ease of use for most things, and the familiarity. I'm really not a fan of any vBulletin design I've seen.

Well like most people I didn't track down the exact plugins, though I think several points are VB config options:

replicate your posts page.

Something similar to My Rig. Preferably tied into a system that can generate amalgamated stats.

ability to soft delete your own posts - they still show up but with contents hidden, so the curious can still read but everybody else knows not to bother. IIRC this is possible with vb configuration, no plugin needed, but could be wrong. BTW it doesn't let you soft delete threads if you're the thread starter, unless there is no reply. Just to emphasise, all this does is communicate to people that your thread/post is a waste of time, and simultaneously flag to mods that they might want to delete it.

personal censor options. Good way to combine freedom to swear and freedom not to read it.

Taking the personal-choice-censorship a bit further, perhaps have a system for users to flag threads nsfw (with moderator override of course) for the benefit of other people who read from work. And hows about "http://forums.anandtech.com/" with your regular profile censorship settings while "http://sfw-forums.anandtech.com/" ignores profile settings and defaults to hardline censorship (no swearwords, hidden "nsfw" tagged threads, all images removed to "click here to show image").

ability to ignore whomever you want. Again this functions as showing that threads/posts exist, but with the contents hidden until you click to show it.

Single quotes show contents, multiple quotes results in the quote showing up but with the contents hidden, again unless you click to show.

if you're going to have any kind of rep system make it a simple "beers given" (i.e. thanked). Max 5 beers a month to give away.

if there's got to be images, and I'm cautiously on the fence about this, there should at least be a profile option to automatically thumbnail them (preferably on by default IMHO). Similarly, if you've got to have signature images, leave profile option to hide them. IIRC VB has these as option, if not there is a plugin (yes it works both for hotlinked images and uploaded attachments).

spoiler text. Though think this in vanilla VB.

The "flag for moderator" is in vanilla VB.

BTW there are some extremely useful moderator plugins.

We have alot of very knowlegable users here on AT, and there are many great, informative posts made here. The problem being that these threads tend to go into obsurity once they are no longer active, and alot of this information becomes hard to access within the forum software. I think you guys should set up a wiki section for AT - use the free MediaWiki software - www.mediawiki.org and then integrate it with vB using vB Wiki Pro - http://www.nuhit.com/vbwiki-pro/features.html. I think this will make the site much more informative and useful for members.

Do not want a reputation system for users. Am open to rating whole threads though.

Custom avatars of reasonable size. OR..... users can upload a custom avatar but also required to pick a standard avatar. Allow users to change their settings to display custom avatars if available, or just the default ones. We should try really hard to keep the ones we have now for use on the new forums. They are nice-looking and easy to differentiate.

Small pics in signatures but again we should be allowed to disable viewing of them in our personal settings. Only problem is I can easily imagine this getting abused and also hogging bandwidth. Forget it, we dont need it if its going to cause problems for the forums.

I like the idea of allowing an OP to lock his own thread, but again I see jerks abusing this. It should probably only be allowed in the Sale and Deal forums.

EDIT:
For mods - In any section of the forum I should have easy access to a link that lets me contact the mods of that forum, either by their user name or just a generic mod title. "PM all Off Topic Mods" or something like that. Same with contacting the master mods of the whole darn thing.

I also have to agree that Fusetalks PM system is far superior to everyone elses. We need to keep it.

You mean how if you start a PM conversation you can NEVER find the first PM in the Sent folder? Face it, FT is broken. For the love of God, mods, don't carry over any bugs (if that's even possible).

People are only up in arms over vBulletin wasting vertical space, it's hilarious how they forget that FT wastes a LOT of horizontal space, especially on a widescreen (about 25%). If you do add a left pane navigation thingy, please make it optional, I hate how much space it permanently wastes on the left half of my screen once I've scrolled past the first two or three posts...

Even though I've never had a problem with this (widescreen monitor) it is a valid point. I'd much rather have a more compact vertical view than an efficient horizontal view-- tons of people have widescreens, and the trend is just going further (towards 16:9 now apparently for computer displays).

Just wondering what the status is on the move?
