I'm afraid this launch will get over-hyped and leave people disappointed.

I worry about that too. AMD might come out with a very competitive card but if everyone is expecting 290X +65%, 8GB HBM, 250W TDP, etc. there will be disappointment if it doesn't achieve that. I hope the 390X is a monster but I don't want to set my expectations too high.

Yep. I'm starting to agree.

Just looking at the first titan info and that's very disappointing (mainly for absurd pricing but even 4k performance is on the weak side), I am starting to doubt the magical 60% increase over the 290x performance leaks.

It shouldn't be a surprise... we all knew Titan X would be at least $1,000 and had a pretty good handle on its performance. So far, I'm really impressed by the ability of folks to estimate performance based upon leaked specs and maths. The Titan X estimates were pretty accurate at 30-50% faster than existing cards (980/290X), depending on resolution. I think we'll see they are also pretty accurate for 390X. The only last bit (that matters) is the price!

It seems that HBM would have to really bring something special to the table to deliver on the expectations.

I said it in the other thread, but I wouldn't trust techspot reviews very much, IMO. I'd wait for other reviews to hit for comparisons.

No new driver for AMD either remember. Have yet to see a driver since the beginning of December!

After reading the Titan X review.. I feel that HBM might not really give AMD a solid advantage because the performance benefits it seem is left largely to the actual shader core itself not the bandwidth (just look at the overclocking results from AT's review). If we take a look at history, it could sort of be a repeat of say the R600 and GDDR4 memory (not much advantage here in terms of bandwidth) or the GTX280 vs the HD4870 with GDDR5. It could very well be a R290X + 45% (2816 -> 4096) just like how the Titan X is GM204 + 50%.

On top of this rumor (take it with a grain/truckloads of salt!):

It might be one toasty GPU..

Are you kidding? Plenty of people folk out major $ for rigs just to play BF4 MP64 smoothly with no min fps dips below 60 fps.

When its a great game that you will be playing a lot of, the entire purpose of a gaming rig you build is just to give you the best experience/immersion from that game.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

asus p9x79-ws can run pcie3 16x/8x/8x/8x/16x/8x/8x.
only if amd or nvidia can figure how to run 390x/titanx "x7".
love to be running 4k surround / eyefinity for true 12k immersion.

It can't be reference. Most of Gigabyte's 290 cards are Windforce, aren't they?

Ryan Smith claims it's the reference variant. Well, at least that's what I got from reading his comment under the article.

could someone tell me why 290x performs better than 980 in crysis 3??? is every other game made for nv gpus or is crysis 3 made for amd gpus?

Cryengine likes AMD hardware and vice versa.

It does. Was it an article here or somewhere else? I don't remember but GDDR5 memory + controller easily take 30% or more of the total power consumption of the card. It's a lot. HBM reduces that significantly which can be used for more processing power.

IMHO for AMD this helps more with power consumption that bandwidth limits.

Not having a Tri-X or any other decent aftermarket 290x/290 in the review really makes it a lot more difficult to accurately gauge what a person buying a video card today should do. I get that they want to test the "Reference" card, but there's absolutely no reason not to add a line for a Tri-X 290(x). Just remove "uber" mode as its really pretty irrelevant as no one uses reference 290x's and its meant to show how it performs when its not throttling anyways.... The 290 and 290x are still the AMD high end competitors and those are the ones I can buy, today. No one in their right mind (who isn't watercooling) buys a reference 290 today or for the last year....

If the performance graph is real:

BF4 390X = 40,4 fps

FC4 390X = 43,8

Tomb Raider 390X = 57,3

Alien 390X = 78,8

this is the only website that includes good custom amd cards in their reviews. it's review helped me with my 290 purchase it is what I use chrome for, to translate it to english

why not both? one test for the reference and one for one of the best custom cooled one like tri x or lightning.

I can't wait to find out if the reviews of 390x would be using the water cooled reference or the custom air ones. that would truly show how mess up review sites are.
