Hello,

I just purchased this monitor (should arrive tomorrow). https://www.samsung.com/us/computin...ming-monitor-with-quantum-dot-lc32hg70qqnxza/

I am buying a new system and was leaning towards the Vega 64 to save a couple hundred, pair with my free sync 2 1440p monitor. I know the 1080ti beats the Vega 64 soundly. Would you guys recommend going for the power of the ti or the benefit of free sync 2 at 1440p

I plan on buying the new call of duty, Wolfenstein 2, civilization 6, and I already play total war (all of them) and mass effect andromeda.

The video card will be paired with either a 1800x or 8700k.

If I bought what you did, I would personally go with the 1080ti. I know that monitor has FreeSync, but I can't justify in my mind buying a Vega 64 for really any reason right now (only blowers available, power hungry, and hot). Just my .02c (I own 2 Nvidia and 2 AMD cards, so I'm equal opportunity based on the product)

you bought a freesync monitor so the next logical purchase would be vega 64.

/thread

Having Async is HUGE.

If you have a freesync monitor, it's just not debatable what you do next.

I wanted to get this monitor to use next to my 4K monitor.

Edit: I'd save a couple more and go Vega 56 too with your monitor choice. I actually want to get your monitor + Vega 56. I think that's the best option you can do right now until Nvidia's new round of cards come out.

Don't play any of those games - mainly single player strategy, RPG type games. I have the Asus MG279Q, so far this year I've gone RX 580, GTX 1070, Vega 64, GTX 1080 Ti. Didn't get much use on the Vega before 1080Ti arrived, haven't really noticed much difference in the games I play, but until I get a waterblock for the 64, I'll stick with the 1080Ti - mainly noise.Wouldn't mind picking up a PG279Q, but hate the Gsync premiums. It's Freesync 2 if I go that way later.

Don't get a VEGA anything. you are setting yourself up for years of benchmarks showing how crappy your card is. I bought a 1080ti 9 months ago and it was the best purchase I have made in a long time. It runs everything I throw at it and doesn't suffer from AMD driver bullcrap.

Lol if you've ever watched benchmarks over years you'll see AMD cards shaming nVidia release date competition.

I also vote Vega, and agree a Vega 56 could be a good match for QHD 144Hz. The 1080Ti is obviously faster but the extra performance and losing Freesync isn't worth the extra cost when Vega is fast enough.

Freesync/GSync is worth more than the difference in performance between 1080 Ti and RX Vega 64.
The gaming experience is what matters most in the end, and a variable refresh rate display improves it a lot. I'm saying that as someone who bought a 1080 Ti to replace his 390, and then instantly missed Freesync the moment I played a game. It didn't take long for me to order a G-Sync monitor.

I seriously consider a Freesync monitor with my 390 to be a better experience than a 1080 Ti with a non VRR monitor. That's how big of a difference it makes to me.

The 1080 TI is in a class of it's own vs. Vega 64. It's not even close in benchmarks, consumes less power, and plenty of dual fan designs for the 1080 TI are on the market which means it will run way quieter.

The freesync capabilities that pair up with Vega 64 would not make up for the lopsided comparisons to the 1080 TI, IMO. If the 1080 TI is too much for your budget, then drop all the way down to Vega 56 and save yourself some money.

Since you already have a freesync monitor and if you want to use freesync, you are better of with the vega64.
AMD does have a habit of getting better performance with each driver update, there is that.
For absolute performance but not having freesync, the 1080 ti is a better option for now.
We are still waiting for the driver from AMD that according to gossip should be released around end of december that would enable the vega tile binning and rendering feature.
Also the primitive shaders might be used soon in games with bethesda working together with AMD to get the maximum performance out of gcn in general and especially for vega.

If it were me , I would not open the new monitor and send it back.
You are limiting yourself by using a freesync monitor to the mediocre performance of AMD high end gpu's.
The last time AMD had a good high end gpu was the 7970.
SInce then Nvidia has ruled the high end and will even more when they launch their new gpu's in 6 months which will be about 40% faster than the current lineup.
WHy would you buy into an ultra high end system with a 1440p 144hz monitor and buy a AMD low high end gpu?

8700K overclocked
gtx1080ti
G-sync monitor
That's a proper high end system.

Spend the extra couple hundred for a gsync monitor and stay in the Nvidia ecosystem for the best high end performance.

Games your playing,,,
CIV 6 gtx1080ti 76 fps , Vega 64 57 fps
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1080_Ti_Gaming_X_Trio/8.html
Call of duty wwii , gtx1080ti 113 , Vega 64 84 fps
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Performance_Analysis/Call_Of_Duty_WW_II/4.html

WHy have a 144hz freesync monitor when your videocard can't take full advantage of it?

WHat happends next year when games put the smack down on the Vega 64 even further? Other will be buying a Nvidia gpu that's 40% faster while your "waiting with the other AMD users" for a card that's slightly faster then a gtx1080ti that will be 2 years old.

DOn't limit yourself with a freesync monitor and slow high end cards for the next 2 years.

my 2 cents.

Get the 1080ti. Right now there is nothing close to it. Over 25% better performance over the Vega 64. Freesync or not the 1080ti is a better choice, especially for 144hz gaming. The Vega won't even be able to push that across the board at 1440p.

There is no point mentioning the 1080ti if op isn't willing to go gsync.

Just reference the 1080ti poster in this thread who had a better with an r9 390 + freesync over a raw 1080ti.

They're both good options, you can't go wrong whether you go 1080ti + gsync or Vega 64 + freesync.

You can go wrong by going 1080ti/vega + no sync monitor. It's like buying a car and putting square tires on it. Just silly.

Edit : op you don't have to pay a lot to switch over. You'll lose some features, but you'll gain an immense amount of speed. You may want to look at some "budget" gsync monitors to pair with a 1080ti black Friday / Christmas deal.

I'm one of those idiots with a Vega 64 liquid... I would say if that is absolutely the monitor you have chosen and will not buy a Gsync model then go with a Vega GPU. As time progresses and newer games tax the system more you will appreciate Freesync more than just the extra FPS on the top end the 1080Ti will give you. I add this as an AMD owner with a Freesync monitor myself; if any Gsync monitors would work for you the Nvidia route would be the better option right now. The downside of Gsync is the limited number of monitors especially in certain sizes currently available.

My advice generally (it's free so take it for what it's worth) is to choose the monitor based on your needs and wants and size, then match it with the appropriate GPU. AMD certainly isn't top dog right now, but at least their options are there.

Edit: I would favor the i7-8700K either way with some good DDR4-3200 or higher cas 14 memory.

My friend was in a similar situation until I showed him a slick deals ad for a $330 dell 1440p144hz Gsync.

You want adaptive sync end of story. The Vega 64 performs really well and is not mediocre in the slightest. Only bad thing about it is the power limit, and voltage cap to keep power consumption in line.

I highly recommend shopping for a good deal on a monitor BEFORE buying a GPU. Getting locked into Freesync and Gsync sucks which is why I own a Freesync monitor and a Gsync monitor for both my Amd and Nvidia GPU's.

If you like the monitor, get Vega.

I have the same monitor in 27" and a 1080 Ti. The 144hz and 1080 Ti makes any adaptive sync irrelevant. No screen tearing whatsoever in any games that I play without any kind of syncing enabled. It would be a different story if you had a 60hz monitor but you don't because the 60hz monitor will tear like a POS even on Window's desktop while you're browsing a webpage.

My vote is 1080 Ti.

Can't stress this advice enough!

You odn't need to mismatch monitors. With deals like this, you may lose a feature or two like HDR or something, but 144hz adaptive sync is amazing don't lose it baby!

I'd go 1080Ti + Dell monitor and I'd upgrade to the 2080ti.

Vega will not have a good successor for awhile in my opinion.

Threads like this demonstrate why we need a single standard instead of proprietary stuff. Choices like this shouldn't need to be made. Also it's black friday weekend, I want it to be 2019 so I can get a 4k 32+ inch 144hz HDR async monitor supported by whatever card I feel like buying...

It's about tying people into an ecosystem. If it's not companies like AMD, Intel, or Nvidia, it's companies like Google, Apple, and Amazon.
Smart business, but can be very crappy for consumers.

OTOH, it gives the companies more incentive to develop new technologies. What would be the incentive for either company to develop new technologies if they could be used by both?

You won't be noticing tearing as much in a 144hz monitor, plus this is completely subjective and it also depends on the game. I literally can't see any tearing in strategy games, some people are way too sensitive and notice it all the time in all games and can't even stand the games because of it.

So its really subjective all around, but if you are not overly sensitive to it, you shouldn't see/feel any annoying tearing in most games especially with a 144hz monitor.

With that out of the way the GTX 1080ti is 25% to 30% faster than the Vega 64, consumes less power and is generally cooler. If you want the best performance to as close to 144hz as possible at 1440p then the 1080ti is the only choice.

Don't get me wrong Vega 64 is a okay card, certainly you can make the case for Vega64 over the 1080, especially with a freesync monitor, but there is no way to make the case for it against the 1080ti.

Get a Vega56. Runs everything at 1440p without unreasonable power consumption.
