I'm planning on upgrading my monitor and KVM switch to 4K. I really want to upgrade my video card to allow me to play 60fps minimum. I am leaning 1080 Ti as of now. Will the upcoming Vega release do 4K adequately? Are we getting any numbers out yet?

No numbers yet, hopefully in the coming days (for the Frontier Edition at least)... Keep an eye on the Vega rumors thread.

Another issue will be the supply of the cards as it may be months until they do start getting enough to be able to find.

I'm tired of rumors. I so want AMD to regain competitiveness. If only for my wallet. LOL

What games do you play? I've been gaming at 4k60 on a single GTX 1070 and it has been great. 4k60 is actually really easy to run. It is 4k144hz that you should be worried about!

My only complaint with the 1070 is it can't run 2 games at once. I run out of VRAM at 4k if I alt tab one game and enter another. Vega's 16GB of HBM2 will easily allow 2-3 games running at the same time.

4K KVM? Wow, talk about overkill. What about a software KVM solution?

It's my money. I prefer hardware over software. Whenever I'm working on another PC I just connect a free video/USB cable and power cable. It's a temporary connection and no configuration needed. Just click back and forth between my main rig, file server and the box I'm working on at any given moment.

I'm sure Vega will do 4k very well, Fiji already does well at higher resolutions, it was always the lower FPS at lower resolutions that were the bad showing.

The gaming (RX) Vegas come out July 30th so you've got a month to plan

Yeah, I'm planning on building a dual Xeon home server and am going to upgrade my monitor and video card in my main rig and just migrate the 970 to the home server. It's quiet as can be when not pushed with it's fans off. I'm going to have a lot of case fans in the home server so cooling will not be a problem. I'm looking forward to what Vega can do. If I have to get a 1080 Ti, I don't think I'll be disappointed.

1080ti does 4k60 pretty well but some settings need to be toned a bit for a solid 60. Rotrr is an example where high setting is a must to maintain 60. Very powerful card, so either you can hold out for vega gaming or just go with the 1080ti but if you can truly wait depending how vega stacks up you might be looking at a lower priced 1080ti.

And if Vega is more akin to a 1080 then how far will he need to tone down settings?

If you're playing New games that's even scarier.

Probably an extra notch down across the board (if vega is more like the 1080), but it also depends on the game. I just started using DSR to get 4k like quality on my 1440p monitor because I'm lazy right now to keep hooking it up to my TV. Also yes its scarier in newer games that are open world because a lot them will destroy the 1080ti's performance at 4k. But then again witcher 3 is one of the well optimized games that can maintain 60 at ultra more often until you go into the woods.

1080 does 1440p 90fps+ well, it's a solid pairing for a 1440p 144hz monitor. I wouldn't expect a 1080 (or Vega, if it's at the same level) to be 'acceptable' at 4k, especially since being pampered by >60fps gaming for like a year.
