I suppose it's fairly obvious, but the later it releases the better (or cheaper) it has to be to generate the same amount of sales. I suppose it depends on why it's releasing in August instead of June (guessing August as that is "a couple" of months after June).

If it's because of supply issues, that's bad for AMD as it means it's an external problem, though I guess it means they can work on drivers longer.

We did see, however, that delays in Ryzen to March (or was it late February) yielded a dynamite CPU. So if the delay yields a better/faster/cheaper GPU than what would be released in June it's making the best of a bad situation.

RX Vega officially delayed up to 2 months past Vega Frontier? More Wait for Vega™ it is, then. Sadly.

Apparently rumors of additional delays were from a quote taken out of context and Fake News™. See below.

Wow, I don't know how much longer I am willing to wait. I wonder if Vega-FE will be any good at DC.

I wish I could buy a 1080ti to use with freesync. Amd doesn't deserve my money.

Ouch.

On the plus side, maybe they can remedy other poor launches.

Maybe they can at least take the time to not overvolt their cards this time. They reduced Polaris 10 voltage with driver updates and 7970 Ghz actually ran at lower voltage than 7970 vanilla, IIRC. I know many people have had success with undervolting other cards too.

Better launch driver performance too please.

It'd be nice if aftermarket was available earlier too. At the very least tweak the reference blower to be better.

Every year I wonder if AMD has learned from their previous poor launches (which live in infamy thanks to substandard benchmark sites never updating). Every year they seem to answer with a resounding "no". This delay could be a chance to change...

I can't read Reddit at work, what is the source of the release date info?

reddit post said:
via Lisa Su during the JP Morgan Tech conference. Such poison to my ears. Let's hope RX Vega demo at Computex blows our minds.

Edit: Source (recording will be posted in next couple days) - https://jpmorgan.metameetings.net/events/tmt17/sessions/12377-advanced-micro-devices-inc/webcast

Edit 2: Depending on the interpretation of Lisa's statements RX Vega can be launching two months from FE or within two months from today. I heard it as two months from FE.

Edit 3: Somebody here is quoting the Bloomberg Transcript from the May earnings call but it's very vague.. 'We will be launching products across all of those segments with the Vega architecture in the next couple of months.' It sounds like she was talking about the launch of FE here. The call occurred early May and a couple months from early May is ~ late June => FE.

We'll see what happens on Computex I guess, but yeah, such a delay on consumer parts... I understand the pro market has higher margins, but come on. The last thing they need is another R600.

Well... to be fair the majority of the budget had to go to Zen development, and that certainly paid off. This is probably one such side effect of that decision. At least things will stabilize themselves with money coming in from Ryzen sales, even more with HEDT and server parts coming up.

Releasing a month+ into Q3 would be a total joke. If this is true, this is really horrible execution by AMD/RTG.

This is highly aggravating.

This is the main thing that has stopped me from buying a Ryzen PC for a while. We won't get decent prices here in Estonia for at least 3 months after the launch ... if this is true, it's really looking more like 2018 for me =/

On the bright side, it might force AMD to launch at an extremely competitive price, just to make sure that they can move some units before Volta arrives.

Im with the wait and see what happens at Computex crowd.

Yeah, I'm not particularly hopeful, but the statements she makes at these types of financial events have to be "worst case scenario" in terms of not being falsehoods.

They might be trying to push it out the door as soon as they're able, but if she over-promises and under-delivers to the financial people that's a big issue for AMD (and Dr. Su).

I'm running a 24" 1080p 144hz monitor for now, so I'm not hurting. That said, I do really want to move to 32" 1440p 100-144hz once I can get Vega to make it easier on my eyes to spot specs of people running across the map in PUBG...

The quote seems to be

The next couple of months is from now to end of July. We knew FE is mid-late June and were hoping RX Vega in July sometime. Nothing about that quote changes that.

Ah the internet.....

This is actually good news.

This is true. And there is pretty much a 100% chance that there are multiple tiers of Vega, like how the RX480 and 470 launched more than a month apart, with one just being a die-harvest of the other with slower memory.

gives me more time to ponder how much I'll shell out on a flagship card. in tern giving the polaris card a bit more run time.

yeah Vega will launch in all markets (HPC, pro graphics and gaming) over the next 2 months according to Lisa Su. So worst case is late July for Rx Vega.

"Frontier Edition will ship with 16GB of HBM2 towards the latter half of June. You will see the enthusiast gaming platform, the machine learning platform and the professional graphics platform very soon thereafter. And so, we will be launching Vega across all the market segments over the next couple of months. "

Su's actual words. Looking at that I think we are just looking at a few additional weeks between Vega Frontier and RX Vega.

So.. maybe it will be a tiered launch like the most recent launch of Ryzen 7 and 5? IIRC Ryzen 7 launched March 2 and Ryzen 5 launched April 11.

Literally, "next couple of months" means June and July launch dates. So between "the latter half of June" and the end of July we should see everything Vega. That's four products in a six to seven week window.

Yep. Launching the highest / most profitable tier first (Frontier / 1800x) followed by the "mainstream" consumer ones after. Its the smart way to do it because you get the impatient people with larger wallets first and then get everyone else after. Same reason Nvidia releases Titan before Ti and *80 before *70. Easier to upsell impatience.

so if FE is not enthusiast gaming card... or for content creation... who's it for exactly?

(besides the guys who'll rant about 16GB HBM2)
