It's like that "I was only pretending to be retarded" meme?
Excuse me if I'm unable to understand the genius of this "marketing stunt", because I suspect that while AMD was fooling their customers Nvidia was selling more gaming cards.
I'm betting all against AMD this time, it's really impossible.

The impossible here refers to Threadripper and Epyc, maybe Ryzen 3 as well. So nothing new here, let's just move on.
with a SIGGRAPH banner?
If it was about the CPU, they would have had those logos someplace there.

It's a graphics developers conference.
(sigh) their wording is nothing new, here they said the exact thing a month ago:

Experience the art of the impossible in person at AMD Capsaicin SIGGRAPH 2017.

On July 30, learn about our newest additions to the Radeon™ Pro family featuring the cutting-edge Radeon™ “Vega” architecture. Hear from our partners on how AMD’s product lineup – Radeon Pro, RyzenThreadripper™, EPYC™ and Radeon Instinct™ – is revolutionizing the creative pipeline, leading industries from entertainment to engineering into a new era of precision and performance.

On a second reading of that TAM slide i noticed the brackets on the right of each bar, so:

the total addressable market is expected to be growing and AMD is expected to have products for the whole TAM only in 2018.

"the impossible" I mean...if they were somehow trolling this elaborately, and doing it so effectively, then fricking kudos to AMD. ...but I remain skeptical.

AMD PR has the less than enviable task of promoting a new flagship product that from all indications won't exactly create lines at retailers.

Some have suggested they not release Vega, some think they can stop marketing it, but that isn't how business works.

You sell what you have and promote as allowed by law, due to responsibility to the stockholders.

I'm surprised we haven't seen a leak with 10 days until launch.

Because it will be a paper launch. I'm expecting myself to see cards on shelves one month later.

The tweet links to the pro radeon site not the gaming site. To me that says they aren't talking about RX Vega.

If they do manage to come out with something clearly above 1080 levels I dont expect it to be because they were sandbagging, but because they got a good last minute scramble in and got lucky enough to get some unexpected performance gains. Otherwise they'd be touting how great it is and would be far less coy with their marketing and showing off the chip at various events.

Paper launch or no, folks like AnandTech always get a week or two with the cards to write their reviews so on launch day at NDA time they can all simultaneously give us their take on the new hardware.

So the RX "must" be out in the wild in the hands of reviewers now, or very shortly. AND even paper launches have joke levels of stock so what are the odds an etailer employee in some remote corner of the world hasn't snagged one and run some benches?

Unless there literally aren't any in existence outside AMD, this is one closely guarded launch.

There's a 600 MHz CPU clock speed difference between the two tests . Either way that graphics score is awfully close to the 1080ti, 1886MHz isn't an overclock though so its an aftermarket 1080ti at its normal boost vs a manually and probably voltage tuned FE with a heavy CPU over clock. This is closer to what I was initially expecting RX Vega to be though a few months back, 10-15% behind 1080ti and once games start using more of the Primitive Shaders in DX12 it will eventually catch the 1080ti, but by then will be competing with GV104.

So, essentially, if it wasn't power limited, it could get closer to the 1080 Ti than the Fury X got to 980 Ti... 1080 Ti's don't have nearly as much overclocking headroom as the 980 Ti's did.

AMD's perf/watt woes strike again.

There is a wide array of PRO workloads where a Vega FE performs in line with a Quadro P6000. That is priced 4 times a Vega FE. I can't see anything strange in a marketing campaign speaking of "impossible".

If I remember correctly, Vega FE isn't aimed at the same market as the Quadro cards. Quadro cards are designed for accelerating design software (e.g. AutoCAD), and are guaranteed to a specific accuracy. It's that latter part that's important as that is one of the things that you pay for. Vega FE is more akin to Nvidia's Titan line... capable of professional tasks, but also fine for consumers (i.e. "pro-sumer").

It's OC'ed to hell and beyond, 150MHz on the core, 150MHz on the HBM2, probably sucking in close to 500W! The CPU is OC'ed a little bit as well. The 1080Ti is not OC'ed though, it can easily reach 2050MHz at a much lower ~350w. So yeah not a fair comparison at all. Despite all that it still couldn't beat the 1080Ti.

I am guessing RX Vega will ship with 1650MHz watercooled version, and less than that if they plan on an air cooled one.

AIB version with 3x8-pin?
Nah, just Vega FE.
