Well, this changes everything, I might pickup a bundle, make a new Ryzen rig instead of Threadripper and order a couple extra Vega on the side... Daaammnnn things can change quickly.

LOL, guess AMD wasn't lying about the bundles to try to keep miners at bay and have some Vega RX cards for gamers.

Well, if it's indeed anywhere close to 100 MH/s, then gamers will almost certainly never see nanos nor probably the RX VEGA 56.

If they are smart they cripple this mining "feature" in RX Vega, via BIOS and drivers (or even better per laser cutting), and only activate it on Vega FE, or even higher priced, products.
Why would AMD do that, assuming they could do that in the first place?

Pretty much all gamers / "press" already have said Vega 64 is bad for gaming compared to the 1080/TI.
It remains to be seen with the RX 56 and how well it will do against a 1070.

AMD just wants to sell the things, they don't really care who is buying them.

AMD is highly fab constrained with GloFlo making everything right now, so, they just don't have enough wafers/month to make a ton of everything.

As for the source of this information...
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/posts/31026435 is original post, and when asked for source, he said https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/posts/31026708
Guy internally from one of the AIB's, maybe he is smoking the BS pipe.
So, everyone needs to

Well now we know the Raja's master plan to sell all Vega dies, that extra 4 billions transistors basically turned the Fiji into a mining asic hahaha

If the crypto mining performance jumps to 70-100 thingamajigs/s from the 30 it was known before, is it possible the gaming performance will enjoy the same jump on the final product?

I truly hope that NVIDIA nerfs gaming Volta's mining capabilities. Let the miners buy Quadros. AMD should do the same.

If the Vega cards do get bought up by miners.. I'll be buying cyberpower pc or ibuypower. They always have cards.

Just got done watching an X-Files episode so the Mulder in me thinks the great for mining "leak" is really just a cover for poor production/volume/stock.

ohhhh great. rumors about Vega being great for mining is not gonna help my chances of unboxing one soon

Pre-order one now and if you don't like it, you should probably be able to resell it at a premium if it's good at mining.

Probably not. If it were that easy, AMD would have already done so and would have been telling everyone about how good the performance is.

However, there is a chance that some games could see good performance bumps from the use of 16-bit floating points assuming that's where the game is bottlenecked and that developers code their game to make use of it.

Isn't the 1080 'immune' due to GDDR5X or something odd? A fair chance that GV104 will be using that for all its variants, and maybe it'll continue with GDDR6 which at least the bigger ones will be using.

Or not of course, the whole thing baffles me

I would assume that mining software would have to be modified to use the specific instructions from the extended ISA. Can explain the discrepancy between early Vega FE results and this new claim of 70-100 Mh/s.

that vega 56 will be a selling star
Too bad its not coming out til September. Hopefully quantities will be strong enough to satiate demand across all markets, crypto AND gaming. C'mon AMD.. you have all of Global Foundries and even Samsung on standby for production. I say that then I realize HBM2 is probably going to ensure quantities aren't enough.

AMD is making their Zen-based CPUs on the same GF process and they probably aren't going to get good enough value for what they would have to pay to use another fab. Also, AMD can sell a ~190 mm^2 Ryzen die for the same price ($500 for 1800X) as they can for a Vega 64, which is over twice as large (Edit: Actually with the size differences, AMD can probably get almost three times as many Ryzen dies per wafer) and has added costs for the board and memory on top of it. They're not going to make any more of these than they can sell without letting inventory pile up. They're probably far more interested in getting Vega into professional markets where it can be competitive.

Using HBM2 was a mistake. Nvidia was smart to go with GDDR5X. The hype for Vega was insane. Every forum and website i been to were beating the Vega drum since the last 2 years.
When you build such insane levels of hype and anticipation, its bound to crash and burn hard.
Now we ride the Navi train. Let it build up as well. Navi the next revolutionary architecture from AMD. Navi the next coming of Christ.

You know, if Vega RX actually performs in mining like how the rumor goes, there would be a huge number of Polaris cards being sold off, and the price for them will drop like a rock.
However, I doubt you will see many new orders for Polaris, since the fabs will be making their most profitable chips, not ones with little demand.

People were hyping Vega around the time Fury X was released?
Every forum and website?
Are you really serious or just practicing your hyperbole?
