Planet Hollywood has great prices right now too, and it's right across from Bellagio, get the strip view room. Other than that, it's freaking Vegas, do whatever you feel like.

Vegas virgin here. So is my wife. We're in need of some advice.

Now first, I know this question has been asked before. I've searched through the past threads and combed through some of the recommendations there. So I've already made a few decisions. Based on previous recommendations, we are 1 step away from booking at the Vdara. It sounds pretty good, but at this point since we have yet to go to Vegas, it's kinda a crapshoot with 0 experience. As far as time is concerned, we're looking to arrive on a Wednesday night and leave Sunday night. I know it's not much time, but our vacation time is a bit full this year.

Anyhow, I like to gamble. I like to gamble in the sense that poker isn't a simple game of statistics the moment you pull a slot machine bar. It's much more entertaining knowing that ones own skills can actually play the ultimate factor in the end result. That said though, I want to play for some overall fun. I don't want to spend the majority of our time at casinos at tables. Nor do I want to plop a bunch of money on a table to lose.

Check out the Venetian poker room. Or if that's too intense, try Excaliber or Harrah's.

Here is where we need help. I'm not sure what else to do... Should I book some shows in advance? How is the pricing? I'm really hoping to not have to plop down $300 for a pair of tickets to a show.

Selection varies but they have discount booths on the strip for show tickets if you don't want to buy in advance.

Overall questions:
1) How expensive is it to do things? Shows, events, dinners, etc...

As cheap or expensive as you want it to be

2) What shows should we see? I tend to enjoy more along the lines of adult humor rather than trying to amaze the crowd.

On a budget, try Laugh Factory at Tropicana, Zombie Burlesque at Planet Hollywood, or Evil Dead The Musical.

3) Recommend some restaurants. Personally, I love craft beer and pubs in general - though I also like a good steak.

Try to get off strip if you can.

4) Do I have any shot at coming home with a wallet that isn't empty?

Not really

Based on the previous threads, and general google searching - below is our current list of things to do. Feel free to give an opinion on these if they are good or suck.

Show - Absinthe
Scene - High Roller Ferris Wheel
Scene - Bellagio Fountains
Scene - New York-New York Roller Coaster
Restaurant - Mon Ami Gabi

You might want to consider staying across the street at Paris, it's a little easier getting around than Vdara. I've only been to Mon Ami Gabi for brunch but it's a great spot. Have fun!

An actual thread where "hookers and blow" is an appropriate answer, if not the best possible answer.

I say hookers and blow.

...btw, Absinthe is fucking awful, and you don't get any to make the show better.

Zumanity is the far superior option for a burlesque cirque, or CrazyHorse for no cirque.

If you plan on not being in your room, stay off the strip and save your dough for blow.

Get a pass for the Ace/Deuce (busses).

If you play poker, play at Venetian. Watch out for people who dress sloppy; they are townies and are good at poker. Dressed up people are waiting for their wives to get back from the Caesar Shops, have tons of money to burn, and have favorite hands. Playing any other games is stupid; you're playing the house.

i'd strongly recommend a helicopter tour to the grand canyon. it's expensive but it's freaking awesome. if you do, make sure you tell them you want the front seats in the chopper so you get priority if it works out that you can sit in the front. it all depends on the weight of everyone going into the chopper, but usually it's fine from what i've heard.

loved absinthe and everyone I recommended it to has loved it as well. Do not recommend being up close unless you want to be picked on. Also, not for the easily offended. If you're going with someone and have $$$ best bet is to buy direct from TM so you can select your seat - the 2/4 tops in the back are lovely.

Vdara is a 5 minute walk to Aria and Cosmopolitan, it's a trek to get anywhere else (meaning 10 minutes from your room just to the strip).

went there 3 times just so she could get a rose and a picture from each of them

The Helicopter tours of The Grand Canyon are pretty cool. I like the ones that land inside of the canyon and let you walk around.

The company we used, papillon.com, also provided snacks, drinks and champagne. We got to stay down there for maybe 30 mins or so.

View of the Grand Canyon West Rim

Pirate show and the people swinging from the ceilings.

They did away with both of those shows (Sirens of Treasure Island pirate show and Masquerade Show in the Sky at Rio Suite Hotel and Casino).

Just booked the Vdara - Jeebus fuck these resort fees are ridiculous. I booked on AMEXTravel using a $100 off $600+ AMEXOffer, and then I saw at the end that the resort fees of ~$140 will be tacked on AFTER the fact. I thought it was priced in the original price =/

Oh well, I suspect that regardless of if we went with a cheap hotel or not that the high resort fees were inevitable.

Anyhow, we are mapping out our plans now based on the suggestions, so thanks guys - keep em' coming. Right now we want to see 3+ shows but only have ~4 nights, so it's kinda hard to fit everything in. But we can definitely find some more stuff to fill up during the daytime

if you're going into vegas trying to be a penny pincher you won't have fun. just go and blow money on things you want to do and you will have a great time. when i was there with a group, some of them didn't want to do certain things because they didn't want to spend money so they sat in their room. f that.

Yeah we just booked a 4 night 'comped' room at Bally's (refurbed Jubilee Tower of course) for December 2016. After resort fees it will still be ~$150 if I remember correctly. Of course those fees could double between now and then.

Don't forget "the sandwich", a $20 between your driver's license and your credit card to the hotel check in person, give it to them, and ask if there's any chance of a room upgrade. It really works.

There's a ton of stuff to do, I'm jealous

i tried the $20 trick last time i was in vegas and stayed at the cosmo but the guy didn't accept it. however i'm not sure if he still upgraded my room or not because i ended up with a strip view with a balcony that was overlooking one of the pools at the cosmo. the room was awesome.

Perhaps refraining from looking longingly into his eyes and him thinking you want to hook up while you attempt to bribe him would help next time

Might check online to see if there are rooms available first, when they're at capacity, it's hard to come up with a different room.

Also, be warned, the check in lines can be a real PITA, get a drink to take the edge off.

$20 is really hit or miss. Sometimes it may just give you a view. For example, when we stayed at Palazzo last year we didn't get a room type upgrade but we did get a high floor with a great view. May have ended up there regardless but I like to think the $20 did it.

If money isn't that important, then a limo and driver rock in Vegas. Pick up and drop off actually near something you want to go to, and you can pop into places and quickly leave if it doesn't suit you.

If money does matter hit the expensive buffets about 20 min before the breakfast/lunch price increase.

Our favorite restaurant in Vegas has been Buchon @ Venetian. Awesome food (actually prefer it for brunch/lunch)

Best steak we've had is at Cut @ Palazzo.

Penn & Teller is an awesome show but if you're not a fan it'll be boring. When we went one of our friends actually dozed off. My wife likes them but it was obvious it wasn't her first choice.

We usually stay at Vdara as it's the only smoke-free hotel on the strip. Big deal for us. Be warned that they're (all MGM properties) are going to start charging for parking. I think it's BS but I guess Vegas is going that way now to make a few extra $$$ (just like those stupid resort fees).

Vegas cheap is just another way of enjoying Vegas, and a hobby of many of the locals. Plenty of old people get in "clubs" where spending less than $100 gambling can get most of everything else comped.

OTOH Vegas is designed to take all the money you think you are rich enough to spend.

Bouchon brunch is awesome.

Agreed re: MGM parking. You would think it should be included in the goddamn resort fee.

Drop off the stuff at Vdara, go park in Bellagio. Problem solved I hate valet parking anyway.

Sure if you like the 15 minute walk from Bellagio to Vdara. In cold ass Vegas winter to boot. It would be easier to park at Cosmo and walk across the street to Vdara no?

HOWEVER lots of Vegas uber drivers complaining about shit rates, so if you need to get somewhere quick and crazy cheap just call an Uber.
