My wife and I are planning to go to Vegas in March for our 1 year anniversary. Neither of us have ever been to Vegas, or really anything like it. I am looking for suggestions on activities/places to stay as well as what things to avoid.

In a nutshell: We plan to do some light gambling, not spending a ton of money. I will primarily play Hold em Poker. Only interest in gambling I have. My wife will probably play some easier 'fun' games, but again, a small budget. We will want a lot of activities/shows etc.. We aren't big drinkers or clubbers.

Suggestions on where to stay, where to go? General tips? All are appreciated!

If you've never been, stay somewhere center-strip. Don't know what your budget is like, but for mid-level hotels in that area, Paris is a good option. Rooms are pretty nice, there's a nice gaming floor, crowd is over the early-20s group that gets a little annoying at some of the other hotels. MGM isn't a bad option either.

If you want to spend a bit more, Wynn is great. I'm not a huge fan of the Venetian but I know a lot of people like it there as well. Bellagio is as good as it gets.

If you want to go cheap, goto Imperial Palace. Its a little dingy, but the rooms are clean and you're in a perfect spot on the strip. Whatever you do, avoid Excalibur and Circus Circus. They're dirt cheap to stay there, but everything about them sucks, including the hordes of annoying kids and drunken college students.

Don't stay Off-Strip just to save money. You'll pay a fortune in transportation to get anywhere you wind up wanting to go. Also, someplace like Mandalay Bay is a really nice hotel to stay in (and a good bargain for what you get out of it), but just be aware that its WAY at the very end of the strip, so anywhere you want to walk to is going to be a major hike.

Also, if you find a show you want to goto, there are places similar to the TKTS booth in NYC that sells heavily discounted show tickets for same-day events. You can check out their website here:
http://www.tix4tonight.com/
It'll show you where their ticket booths are, what time they open, etc.. Get there before they open and see what shows they're selling for that day.

Another good website for general info on what hotels are good, what each hotel offers, etc.. is here:

Stay on the strip. Get Venetian through hotwire.
Vegas is for gambling and hard partying. Not much else to do IMO except shows. Maybe fine dining if you want to spend the money.

Bills is great for cheaper gambling on the strip. Across from the Bellagio.

Vegas is the 3rd best culinary city in America so dine well.

Agreed on Hotwire or Priceline for cheap hotel rates.

I've been watching travelzoo for some deals. I've decided I only want to stay on the strip, as that's what a lot of people mentioned. Budget isn't a huge concern, just don't want to go crazy. Nothing cheap though.

I've stayed at the Trump, Stratosphere, Golden Nugget, and the Riviera. The Riviera is awesome if you're an octogenarian and probably the only place on the strip that has a free oxygen tank-recharging station on the gambling floor. I kid. A little.

People rave about how nice the Trump is, but I just didn't see it. It's sterile and ugly, even for Vegas. It has absolutely zero character. I just didn't like it, especially for what I paid.

The Nugget was probably my favorite. I wouldn't spend your whole time there, but at least stay for a night. They have what is, without a doubt, the world's greatest swimming pool. It was clean, the dealers were friendly, and it just had a really good vibe.

The Straosphere was pretty awesome. Yes it's way the hell at one end of the strip, but it's actually nicely equidistant between Fremont and the Strip. And you really SHOULD go see Fremont, the Nugget is very nice and Sam Boyds is great to gamble cheap at. Plus the Fremont Street experience needs to be seen to be believed. It gets old really quick, but the first 10 minutes or so is pretty awesome.

As for stuff to do, make sure you hit up Slots of Fun. It's the best dive casino on the strip. The Golden Nugget will give you at least 10 fake dollars for signing up for their players club (it's free) and it's pretty easy to win a couple bucks with them at one of their slot machines. Go eat at a nice place, the restaurants are crazy. Also hit up Strip Burger some night, it's great to people watch from and they seem to cater to exhausted, gambled-out people. Go ride the thrill rides on top of Stratosphere, it's pretty cheap especially if you stay a night there. The Riviera has a cheap, reasonably fun Hold 'em poker tournament every day.

It's also very easy to spend literally a day just walking up and down the strip once. Every few feet there's something incredible to take a picture of, or go inside and see. The Arboretum inside the Bellagio is amazing, and the fountain show is fun to watch once. All of these things are free. And obviously go see a show. Everyone defaults to Circue De Soleil, but I prefer Blue Man Group.

See any Cirque Du Soleil (more than one is better) beside Zumanity.

Eat at Bellagio's buffet and restaurants in the shopping area next to Caesar's Palace.

For fun you can rent an exotic car like Lambjorgini (easy to find the place).

Never been to Criss Angel but might be good.

Defiantly try the $20 Tip Trick. It's worked for me at the MGM and the Bellagio...

http://www.thetwentydollartrick.com

easy cheap way to get nice room upgrades. And if you don't want to spend the $20, you can even just ask the check in clerk (person that does all the clicking on the computer at check in) if they have any "complimentary upgrades"

Check out all the Hotel's free shows.

Goto the top of the Stratosphere.

Another vote for Cirque Du Soleil here. Saw Le Reve last year and it was fantastic. Truly unforgettable.

I saw "O" while I was there, and it was great! "La Reve" at the Wynn is very good as well.

Make sure to take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour while you're there. Some of them even land inside the canyon and serve you lunch while you're there... very cool.

We go quite often when we find good air faire.

#1 suggestion is to get a rental car and just valet park anywhere you want to go. If you don't want to drive down the main strip (do it once though at least), go a block over and take Paradise, it parrallels the strip. You can get basic maps from any hotel lobby. The buses suck and taxi's are expensive and you will get tired of walking. Car rentals are cheap in Vegas (one year I paid $9 a day).

#2 Get and use a player's card for whatever hotel/casino you like and think you'd enjoy staying some day. They WILL send you special offers since you'll be on the mailing list now. Depending how much you gamble with it they could even send you free room offers and what not.

#3 Go to downtown Fremont street for a bit less busy and older style vegas. We find it very relaxing down there, especially in the mornings. Eat at the Bay City Diner in the Golden Gate for breakfast/late night/dinner/whatever. Don't wait in line, just walk up and sit at the counter. There's a cool light/sound show above the entire street through the evenings. Valet park at the Golden Nugget. Cheap and good blackjack tables can be had at Binions and the Goldgen Gate, and various other ones. Slot machines also tend to be a little more loose.

#4 Bring a specific amount of money for gambling (seperate from your food/accomidations money), that you are comfortable losing. You probably won't, but that way you can relax and have fun with it. If you run out then oh well, if not then yaaay. Please don't hit up the ATM for gambling money.

As for where to stay, unless you are staying at one of the top hotels or upgrading room, I wouldn't pay over $100 a night for a hotel room. Especially right now, they should have deals all over the place. Here's the hotels we like:

Main Strip:
Wynn - Will be expensive, but an incredible hotel with amazing rooms. This is one of those places you'd think of splurging for. The Buffet here is amazing, it's expensive but worth it.

Venetian - Similar to Wynn in luxury and quality of the rooms, about the same price depending on deals at the time. Worth it to walk through the shopping area even if you don't stay here.

MGM Grand - Nice hotel, but retarded huge and too far at the end of the strip. If you rent a car it's not bad but if not I'd stay away. Can be expensive. Really nice though.

Harrah's - Nothing fancy, but reasonable room rates and great staff. Clean and perfectly located in the center of the strip.

Treasure Island - Nice hotel but seems more of a conference/business type of hotel. Good location though. Usually expensive unless they send you a special offer.

Las Vegas Hilton - This is a personal favorite of the wife and I's mostly because it's actually a little bit off the strip. It's on Paradise near the end of the strip that the Rio is on. It's nice and quiet with clean rooms, good staff, and a good Casino for late night relaxed gambling. Part of the Casino is SciFi themed, it used to be where the Star Trek stuff was. (hey, we're dorks what do you want). It's also CHEAP. We usually stay here for ~$30-$50 a night. It's also in the perfect location to hop back and forth from downtown Fremont and the main Strip. (to get to Fremont fast, go stright up Paradise and run into Las Vegas Blvd...keep going on LVB until you hit Carson and go left. Keep going on Carons till it ends at the Golden Nugget valet area, leave car there. 5min drive tops).

Stratosphere - We thought this was a dirty shithole...seemed like the kind of place the freshman college kids thought was awesome...ie shitty.

Circus Circus - Stay away, very very far away.

You really can't go wrong with any of the shows, even the cheap shitty ones are good for a laugh.

If you get a car, take a trip out to the Red Rock Canyon park. There is a nice nature drive through there with many pull offs for short hikes (and some long ones).

Hoover Dam is worth seeing at least once.

We love Vegas and can't wait to go again. Havn't had a chance to the past year.

Have fun!

For the buffet at bellagio watch out for when they ask for people [in line] to go to the bar. If you get their attention first they will let you bypass the line and go straight in. I probably skipped an hour and a half wait like this.

Go to tiks4tonight to find deals for shows.

Watch out for agressive hooker playing card mexicans. One threw some in my bag when I wasn't watching.

If you look in vegas brochures they give you in the hotel room they give prices for restaurtants.

$ = ~20 per person
$$ = ~40-60 per person
$$$ = 100-150 per person
$$$$ = who knows

Agree with most of that, but the Strat is NOT a college kid hangout. It's too far down one end of the strip and none of them care about going to Fremont anyways. It was perfectly nice and clean when I was there, but of course you were likely in a different area.

Between the ease of getting to Fremont from there, and that it makes all the thrill rides 10 bucks cheaper to go on (and the OP REALLY should try to at least go on one of those) the Stratosphere is a pretty sweet place to spend a night.

Wynn is the best. Avoid cheap ones because of the stupid kids that scream "Holy shit, we're in Vegas baby. Vegas baby" every five minutes.
