I do agree that how they treat animals is horrible, I've seen how they're herded into the slaughter house and how the meat hangs there for quite some time. But I like meat, and quite frankly, there's not a slight chance that I will stop eating it.

obtaining and consuming higher protein energy sources are the primary reasons why the human brain was able to evolve to the point it's at today. Man is not a threat without thought, and the challenge of hunting, self defense, and protecting food is what not only allowed us to become the dominant species, but forced us to do so. Ignoring these millions of years of instinct seems a little silly to me if it is done for political or religious reasons. Of course one could argue that we have other external conflicts forcing our brains to continue evolving and that we can produce our own food from other sources...but i for one just want to wait a few generations of hippies out to see how dumb they get!

For starters, I am not a vegetarian but I try not to consume a lot of meat. I think that Einstein is correct in his statement, the health benefits of a vegetarian diet and the impact of not having anymore meat processing plants on our environment would be tremendous. FYI a typical cow produces over 200 pounds of methane gas each year; replace that cow with a crop of vegetables and you will be producing oxygen and an endothermic reaction. Also, the living conditions for these poor animals are horrible. I would like to hear input from you guys and gals about this and are there any pro's to NOT being vegetarian???

You are probably right, but people are people.
They are selfish and set in their ways, and they do not care about or for things that do not directly effect them.
There are very few human needs, and many human wants.
We are all guilty of it. Every single one of us. I know from time to time, I think about the conditions and the improper use of life. And I have to block it from my mind.
You just have to realize that although you may take part in these evils, you didn't start the fire. And you cannot put it out. So you might as well enjoy the warmth.
I like this quote.

I am a meat eater, girlfriend is a veg.

She doesnt eat it because ... well only the past few months been veg.

I dont get why she doesnt eat meat anymore, she just doesnt lilke the cruelty.

She isnt even taking any supplements, give me something to fight with!

Tell her to eat meat from animals which haven't been treated cruelly?

She is taking a stand. Be proud of her for trying.
But it probably won't last long. Most people I know who have tried being vegetarian give in to temptation.
Meat tastes good. And eventually her body will crave it.

I am proud.

She is doing really well so far...for being 3 months into it.

Humans are made of meat. You eat humans?

No, but dogs and frogs are made of meat too, and I don't eat those either.

I think a key point in here is meat in moderation. This is something I'm personally working on, but the fact of the matter is that humans DO need nutrients that cannot be obtained through a strict vegetarian diet. In fact, our diet should FAVOR vegetables (and fresh fruits). But, you cannot eliminate meat altogether and still reach your full "health potential".

You also cannot get on a soapbox and rant about the negative effects of eating meat by leaning on the fast-food mongers as the basis of your argument.

"OH NOES SOMEONE WHO ATE MCDONALDS 8 DAYS A WEEK had A HEART ATTACK!!!!11" just doesn't fly.

Here's an idea: let's throw the vegetarian fanatics and the meat fanatics all into a big huge blender. The result should be a nice balanced shake.

Pros to not being vegetarian - growing muscle, being stronger, having more energy, and not having to worry about missing out the 1 amino acid that will render all the protein you take in useless.

Also - meat is tasty... and the fact that I have teeth that are meant to cut through meat tells me that evolutionarily I am an omnivore, not an herbivore.

Over the last 5 years I would say i average 8-10 lbs. of meat(pork ,beef, poultry, fish, etc) per month. I am 53 and way app. 200 lbs. and have eaten meats all my life, but I am reducing meat
products from main course status to merely another ingredient, example: Spaghetti sauce, I will use a pound or a little more depending on fat content and this sauce will feed me for 4-5 days, by freezing half of it for later use. If i make a beef stew using about a pound of meat the veggies will weigh 2-3 lbs. and will feed me for 3 days, same deal with a teriyaki stir-fry i make, by the time I have added the veggies and rice the meat portion of the meal is maybe 20% of the dish. When I eat pizza i always order cheese only, always have(I love a good cheese pizza). My meat consumption is probably 1/2 -1/3 of what it used to be, I eat lots of fruits and vegetables breads and nuts and beer.

I guess I am a little like that guy in the "Outback Steakhouse" commercial , who is a "vegetarian" but, we still eat a little beef pork and chicken. LOL

Don't forget, you have to feed the cows food as well.

No more cows means that you should, approximately, only be producing for the humans.

True but I think there are more important factors like waste runoff, methane production, diseases (SARS, MadCow, eColi, etc)...

Well, if there weren't that many cows in the first place, then there wouldn't be so many problems, would there?

And anyways, it's not only cows that we're talking about here: there's pigs, chickens, turkies, and I don't know what else you carnivouros people eat. (I'm vegetarian)
