My parents helped move all of my shit from the van to my room freshman year, then once it was all inside, but most certainly not situated, we went to Eddie George's Grill down the street, grabbed some grub, then they left.

Every year they never spent much time down here, only enough to get my stuff unloaded at my place but never stayed longer than me getting everything out of boxes. We all preferred it that way. 2.5hr drive, one-way, will make you want to get things done quickly.

It was cool though, they came down the weekend of graduation, and the night before we stopped at back at Eddie George's and grabbed some grub and brew.

2.5hr drive? LOL. I can't even get out of my state in that time

We had our goodbye's at the driveway in front of the house. All the stuff loaded in the truck. I remember being pretty teary eyed as I drove away.

I would probably do the traditional help them move in thing, but that's about it.

Parents dropped me off at the airport. I had all my schooling and expenses paid through financial aid (no loans). My Mom came and visited me once my freshman year, and my Dad flew me to meet him in Vegas the next semester.

I transferred to a university 3 hours away and my parents didn't come with me when I moved into an apartment. Of course, they visited several times throughout the years. But the person I moved into an apartment with was a friend who my mom knew well, so like she thought we'd look out for each other, but she knew him well enough to know that I'd be the one more likely to keep us out of trouble.

My parents came and visited me once. 3 months before I graduated. lol.

6 hour plane ride didn't help things.

The beauty of OSU being so close to your hometown.

But, with that in mind, we made sure everything was just a 1-day event. With it being close, turning it into a multi-day adventure is absolutely unnecessary (and a waste of vacation time and money to stay in a hotel, imho). So it was all about having a fast turn-around time at move-in or move-out so that we could avoid all that.

Takes me nearly 6 hours to get out of my state now .. by car.

When I went to college, parents dropped me off, helped carry stuff up, went to lunch, and then left. I did see them every home football game, though, as they had season tickets.

Oh it's the same for me. It's almost closer to go to Mexico than to go to another US State, but fuck if I'm going anywhere near a border town these days.

My stuff was still laying in a pile, I said "thanks for helping me carry it up to my room, Mom. Love you, drive safe on the way home." "Don't you want help putting it all away?" "No, I'll do that later. I'm going to meet some new friends before all the cliques form."

Just dropped my youngest son off to college Saturday. Thankfully I didn't have to carry the 36" television up any stairs - that sucker is heavy, even for 2 people. The last thing I carried in was his refrigerator with a 30 pack in it. "You might want to shut your door while you take them out of the box so that the fridge door closes. Do good this semester, love you, see ya."

The key is to pre-load the fridge and tape the door shut. That's what I did at least.

My freshman year, my parents helped me move stuff in and then left. Didn't stay for any of the parent-student events. Just left. My sophomore year my mom helped me move in, but I unpacked all my crap. Junior year I lived in a house so my parents helped move my stuff in. Senior year I was living in the same house, so there was no moving. When I moved out, they came and helped.

Never did they linger. Fortunately.

I was pretty much in the same boat as a lot of other people here. My parents loaded up the car, helped me get my shit into the dorm, then left. They only came down when I invited them, which was once or twice a semester, maybe.

Who goes to orientation events anyway? The only thing that's a bigger waste of time is the actual walk-across-the-stage graduation ceremony.

we got yelled at for not going to ours. Seeing as we had already been on campus for 2 weeks because of preseason we felt it was a waste of time

My freshman year, my parents dropped me off at the airport with two duffle bags. I got on a plane, flew 3,000 miles, and took a cab to my college dorm.

That was that. Weird experience, though.

My roommate's parents stayed in town for 4 (FOUR) weeks after school started.

He was an annoying guido, and so were they

freaking in 1999 when I went back to college, I'd say 1/3 were students registering alone, 1/3 with parents and 1/3 only parents registering their 'kids'.

College has become an extension of high school.

Would have, but picked up the beer on the way. He was in the back of the van and would have loaded it, but realized that you're not supposed to close the refrigerator when it's stored. A little bit of mildew in there that he wanted to clean out before removing the cans from the case.

it's been years since my undergrad, but iirc parents helped me unpack & pack, and that was about it. it helped that the college was 3 hours away so unless they sprung for a hotel they weren't going to stick around I suppose they might've taken me out to dinner a few times, but after unpacking, they didn't hang around the dorm.

My mom had a cot in my room and slept in it all first two years. I found it ok. It was only a problem when I took women back to my room and she pretended she was asleep while we watched interracial pron on the tv.

My parents helped me move my stuff into my room, made sure I had everything I needed, and left. They only came down after that to bring me home after my first semester and when I graduated. I think that's pretty much the perfect level of involvement. Get your kid there and make sure they're okay, but leave the rest up to them.

That was about it for mine as well. They may have helped me move in the fall of my Sophomore year, but I don't remember. Darn kids these days....
