No... we've been waiting for a long ass time to get decent reliable SSD drives at a reasonable price. If you need the storage there's no use in waiting.

This is a very good deal and IMHO you would better off jumping on it rather than waiting for the magical time when SSD is perfected and prices come down to Earth.

Tests of SSD drives vs. mechanical hard drives inevitably match single drives against single drives. That's all well and good for testing, but in the real world, due to the massive difference in price per GB between mechanical and SSD, you can afford two mechanical drives and still have money left over when you compare the cost to a single SSD.

Here, if you have two free SATA 2.0 ports on your MOBO, you can run two of these drives in RAID O for $398 plus shipping or a little more than $0.79 per GB. Compare that to the $630 cost of the largest single SSDs (250GB or $2.52 per GB) and you really would need to see a huge performance boost to make waiting for SSD worthwhile.

I'm not saying that SSDs aren't the clearly superior storage medium, I'm just saying that two Velociraptors installed in your computer right now is the hotter deal.

perhaps you should try Raptor first. mainstream 7200rpm drive user can't comment latest Raptor drive.

Very good deal on the top consumer ATA HDD on the market. I don't think comparing it to SSD is really fair or a complete argument. Like most proponents of SSD you fail to mention how much faster the write speed on a velociraptor is over an SSD. Most real world benchmarks and application tests that aren't purely random read test show the velociraptor performing quite well if not beating SSDs especially where write performance is a factor.

Doubt it. Velociraptor has been on the market for only 6 months give or take. It's way too soon to replace it.

Unless of course WD is planning to enter SSD market with fast and cheap drive. However, that's just wishful thinking and more than likely it's just a case of retailers getting rid of the inventory.

Wonder why 20,000RPM and not 15,000RPM like other drives, or some other in-between speed? I'd imagine that they can make some improvements to the current VR to make it better without a huge redesign such as slightly higher platter densities, spinning platters a bit faster (12,000RPM? 13,000RPM?) and dropping the price. Heck, who wouldn't want a 400GB VR that can sustain reads and writes at 25% faster (due to higher RPM and platter densities) than the current drive for $180 in six months, with a 200GB version for $130?

yeah, WD3000GLFS model is deactivate, newegg sells WD3000HLFS model instead, probably different revision.
