but that hard drive isn't really open-faced like they show in the pictures, is it?

no, many drives are shown like that for Illustration only. There is/was a 150gb raptor x that had a partial clear cover over it though.

Not only is the drive not "open-faced" (want a side of cole slaw with that) :laugh:,
but it also includes the WD IcePAK which is a cast metal sled that supposedly acts as a heat sink.

The more likely reason for the IcePAK is it allows the 2.5-inch drive mechanism to be mounted in a 3.5-inch hard drive cage.

That's right, the Velociraptor is 2.5-inch drive. It really is a totally different animal than a standard desktop computer hard drive and it is hands down the fastest SATA hard drive available.

Actually, it's more pheasable right now since the disc has been shrunk from the 3.5" to the 2.5" format. It's easier to keep in balance & lighter to spin (less heat).

Thank You OP. I was at Microcenter at lunch and almost pulled the trigger on 2 150gb Velociraptors at $184. Some inner voice was screaming NO!!!!!!!!!! Sure enough 1/2 hour later I'm the proud owner of 2 300gb Velociraptors. WOOT.

If this were 1 year ago this would be smokin hot. No fun playing the waiting game. Unfortunately today SSD drive prices are dropping like rocks and this level of performance at this price point is going to be surpased very soon.

Thanks I ordered one and picked it up Sunday. They never pulled my drive from the shelf. It was funny to watch the guy pick through a bin of RAM before realizing he didn't know what a hard drive was and to ask another guy for help. I have a 74GB raptor in an older PC and it does make a big difference to me. It reminds of when I used to have a workstation with a SCSI drive versus IDE.

yeah, WD3000GLFS model is deactivate, newegg sells WD3000HLFS model instead, probably different revision.

The deactivated model had the SATA plug in a nonstandard position so it wouldn't work with enclosures. The newer model works with enclosers that's the only difference I'm aware of.

I definitely, or should say personally, do not consider $200 for this drive hot. Pm me when it hits the 150 range.
