velociraptor in a netbook?

Yeah, I seem to recall that the Velociraptor is thicker than most notebook 2.5" HDDs.

...the problem is size. The Velociraptor is 12mm thick while most HDD slots in laptops are only 9.5mm. If you googled this, you would have found this out and more information about it here.

A couple things to think about.

First, if you buy a normal VelociRaptor and remove the IcePak heatsink, you void the 5 year warranty. What you want is to buy one that is not manufactured with the heatsink, thus retaining the warranty. That model is WD3000BLFS. It is considered an enterprise level drive and thus availability is limited and price is high.

Second, even though they are 2.5" in size, they are thicker than normal notebook drives, thus would not fit in most situations that call for a normal notebook drive.

Third, if you want snappier performance, a good SSD runs circles around a VelociRaptor.

Well it would suck down the battery a lot faster. Get an SSD.

A regular 2.5" idles at .7W... velociraptor idles at 4-6W.

Yes, and a regular notebook hard drive is cheaper than a VelociRaptor. What's your point? If you want best performance, get an SSD. If you want most gigs for your money, get a regular notebook drive (which it already includes).

In this review the reviewer said:
"If I had to mention something it would be the somewhat high temperatures and the 5400 RPM hard drive."

If the slowest HDDs you can buy are already running hot, I don't think you'd want a VelociRaptor in there even if it could physically fit. Best budget bet would be to get a 7200RPM notebook drive and hope for the best. Alternately, SSDs run cooler as well as performing better.

You sound like you're describing yourself.

The velociraptor is not a big speed boost over the fastest conventional drives. It is way slower than the fastest ssds. And you can get ssds for the price of a velociraptor, though I'm not sure how speeds compare. However, if you're running windows XP, just throw flashfire onto that machine. It really improves write performance on slow drives by providing up to a 64MB write cache from system ram. I threw it on an old IBM desktop and it made even the slow hard drive in that computer seem relatively speedy.

I resent that..first of all I'm not a kid and second I'm not rich. If all I do is web browse, email, and edit pictures what's wrong with this box (and wanting some faster HD speed to boot)?

As for the hardware, while the idea of using small green Cool Computer, as the one that you chose, for Mundane work is an excellent idea. Given what you are doing with this computer and the price od SSD, I really do not understand what would be functionally better.

Good new technology is very Cool when it really does something functionally.

There are also some 5400rpm drives that perform just as well as the 7200rpm drives.

Ah yes, that would be true. But since I have a tendency to plug-in my laptop wherever I go, maybe it's not a big deal? (there are other problems still...)


So while many of today's conventional HDDs are as fast or faster than the velociraptor, the raptor still has better seek times and it's most likely faster than most notebook HDDs, if not all.
