Microsoft so badly wants to reinvent itself that it is scary sad to see it in action. They are perpetually behind the curve, jumping on the latest bandwagon craze only to find themselves too late and too little.

The whole Zune affair was just classic Microsoft, as was the internet to be blunt about it.

They can't decide who they want to copy. Do they want to be Google II, Apple II, Sony II? No one knows.

What we all know though is that Redmond doesn't have an innovative bone in its bloated corporate body. All it knows to do is try and offer "me too" solutions after they see someone else bring it to market.

Tablets and Windows RT are just the latest effort to be something other than what it currently is. They are forever playing catch-up outside their core product line (windows OS), and even that is debatable considering what Apple's OS has continually brought to the market.

MS will die trying, they aren't asleep at the wheel. But they are lacking something, the ability to do what the folks at Google and Apple have done right under their noses.

Wintel itself is the problem. Android on x86 brings no benefit to the masses and x86/Windows is too expensive for that market too.

Asus Dropping Windows RT to Focus on Intel-based Windows 8

Windows RT is Microsoft's version of Windows for ARM-based tablets and laptops, but it hasn't exactly had an explosive first year. Today, Windows RT suffered another blow, as Asus confirmed that it won't be making anymore Windows RT tablets. Asus CEO Jerry Shen made the comments during an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Shen said that the industry's opinion was that Windows RT hasn't successful. Instead, the company will focus on Intel-based products running Windows 8. [...]

imo ms is a lost company with a out of date personal staff from ceo down to the managers of the programing mills.
-ever see the idiot [ceo] on stage with a 11" lap top selling win 8.1 trying not to push it over using the touch screen. oh metro does personal pic. sorting like who cares for a muti billion investment in the crop rate business os.
even win7 does not act like it can scale to a mainstream pc res. let alone down scale to mobile.
eg. power option on pc pre set to mobile specs.
- seems like the gui are programed on 12" mono chrome monitors.[same with nv nvcp btw]
-ms board of directors need to be replaced, so a real world board can fire most managers .
xbox 1 release complete fu by non tech. manages to ceo.didn't have a clue what peeps wanted.like a gaming console da so ms offer them a meda box for $500.00.

Yeah... this..

I mean its not the worst strategy in the world, if you're gonna copy others then great copy the best but there needs to be some factor setting your copies apart from theirs, usually that's price, MS never seem to have a fair price.

gah the entire windows 8 platform is a joke.

get rid of windows 8 and the metro dashboard.

They even thought it was a smart idea to put a dashboard on windows server 2012.

So we get a awesome low power cpu for a dashboard? :\

Fortunately, Windows 8.1 is quite nice and addresses many of the complaints about 8.0, and has many QOL improvements which I think will make it ideal over Windows 7 even for desktops. It also is very usable for both the desktop and tablet form factors, while 8 was clearly slanted towards tablet use - but, I don't know if 8.1 will take off for tablets. I imagine MS will charge way too much for the OS license, and when android is free *and* a good tablet platform -- well, if you do the math that means that most tablets will steer towards android. MS is rumored to be offering substantial discounts to tablet manufacturers for full windows 8.1, but I don't know if that's true.

IF MS has any sense they will make a push to get windows 8.1 onto tablets (by lowering the license cost) and they will drop RT together. Clearly RT has no future, IMO.

Samsung jump the gun on Bay Trail Windows 8 tablets:

Intel Bay Trail-powered Samsung tablet shipped for testing, could be Windows 8 and Android hybrid

Intel’s most powerful mobile chip, the Bay Trail quad-core SoC, is expected to arrive this fall and offer processing power that blurs the line between PCs and tablets, and the first Samsung tablet to use the beastly chipset has been found to have shipped for testing, according to Zauba’s shipping documents. The tablet has a reference number of FTXI02W0000026 (common to all Bay Trail devices, Samsung or non-Samsung), though that’s all the details the shipping manifest offers.

The tablet is most likely a Windows 8 tablet, but since Bay Trail supports Android as well, we might see an all-in-one hybrid tablet that can boot into both. Whichever OS it runs though, expect it to be a veritable powerhouse

Interesting finds Sweepr. Definitely fits with the rumors of Baytrail-T launching sometime around IDF in early September.

Going to be quite interesting to see how performance and power actually measure up.

Acer one has been known for a while - http://tablet-news.com/2013/04/27/a...ered-atom-bay-trail-10-inch-tablet-named-wt5/

No huge surprise to see Dell and Samsung either. What they need to be in is something like the Nexus 10.

Why is that?

They're obviously not gonna make Apple drop their own design teams they've invested in - so a foot in samsung massive global dominance overall seems much more important that a little PR toy in the us market that doensn't sell that well either?

No logic at all?

If i was Intel - i'd focus on buttering up samsung at all means neccesary and convince them the effect of a BayTrail SoC on the overall picture will give them more ROI.

If Intel reroutes some of their Ultrabook marketing funds to Bay Trail-T tablets, there should be some very good models available on launch.

Samsung are the obvious partner, especially with them struggling with their own chips. If Intel puts too much emphasis on Samsung they'll end up antagonising Apple more than they can afford, however.

The real problem would be - Samsung are just as merciless and corrupt as Intel are. I'd absolutely love to see those two in bed together trying to make it work to their own benefit first, but I suspect neither is crazy enough to try.

How bout some budget ultrabooks as well. I know a few family members and friends who'd love an ultrabook, but don't really need an Ivy or Haswell processor.

I can't decide if that would be awesome or frightening. Samtel

Man the competion is merciless for Intel. Qualcomm dump this processor all over and the new nexus got krait 300 cores. At the time Intel gets a foot on the mobile processors the s800 successor is probably ready. Intel shouldnt have let Qualcomm devellop that dense portfolio, now they just come hammering with new cores every ½ year.

Btw. Apple must feel the heat from the new tablet machines. But they have their crazy brandvalue that will sell their new pad mini regardless of screnn res or power.

Fudzilla said:
Intel’s Q2 earnings call signalled the start of a strategic shift to small cores, namely Atom. Although Intel introduced Haswell in Q2, much of the emphasis was on Atom. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Intel President Renee James said Intel is now bringing Atoms on par with its Core products.

"We are treating Atom and Core equally," said James. This was not the case just a few years ago. For much of its life Intel treated Atom as an unwanted bastard child, a small core with low ASPs and margins - and we all know Intel loved big and pricey chips.

"We’re building parts for Atom that come all of the way up to Core,” said James. “You can build a Windows tablet, you can build and Android tablet, you can run both.”

James also talked up Android, which will probably be the OS of choice for many future Atom products.

"We've increased our efforts on Android," said James. "We're upping everything on the developer side"

Asked to comment on possible Atom cannibalization, James shrugged off any fear that consumers might ditch big cores in favour of Atoms.

“We think lots of people want high performance machines,” she said.

James showed off a Sony Vaio hybrid based on Haswell and pointed out that it could replace older PCs and to some extent tablets.

“That’s not a one-for-one replacement,” she added. “We’ve created Atom products that scale all the way up and down and Haswell products can also scale down to fanless designs.”

James said there will be some amount of cannibalization, but with different price points and form factors Intel should have no trouble coming up with a new segmentation approach.

Toshiba’s first Windows Tablet announced at IFA

8'' Windows 8.1 (x86, not RT) tablet featuring a Bay Trail-T processor for $330! November launch.

The Encore is an 8-inch tablet that runs Windows 8.1. Toshiba has announced that it has worked closely with Microsoft to ensure that the tablet is optimised for Windows 8.1, which is set to launch in October. The tablet also features dual-microphones and is certified for Skype.

This is Toshiba’s first tablet in the Windows ecosystem. The Encore features an 8-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800, and is powered by Intel’s new quad-core Bay Trail processor. In a benchmark that was released yesterday, it was revealed that the Bay Trail Z3770 processor scored three times what the current-gen Clover Trail Z2760 scored.

The Encore also features 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, which can be extended by another 32 GB through the micro-SD card slot. The tablet comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera at the back and a 2-megapixel camera at the front. The Encore comes loaded with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 and the Xbox SmartGlass software which allows it to be used as a second screen for the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One, when it launches.

The tablet also features Micro-USB and Micro-HDMI ports, and connects using Wi-Fi. Toshiba has mentioned that the tablet will be available starting November and that it will cost $330.

So basically the user will have almost no space left? How large is a windows 8.1 install? Is it a lot smaller than Win 7? Because my win 7 is 25 Gb alone and if you add Office and the fact that 32 GB is actually only 29.8 usable...

Depends I would guess, mine is is using less than 16GB for Windows 8.1 on my SSD.

That's with several drivers installed as well.
