So basically the user will have almost no space left? How large is a windows 8.1 install? Is it a lot smaller than Win 7? Because my win 7 is 25 Gb alone and if you add Office and the fact that 32 GB is actually only 29.8 usable...
The Encore also features 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, which can be extended by another 32 GB through the micro-SD card slot.
Yes it monitors all the changes to the OS, from microsoft technet blogOne of my pet peeves with Windows7 and 8 is the WinSXS file and how it grows the windows install. Check the size of it out on your machine - on one of our office machines that gets light use it is already 10.2 gigs and growing. I have had some as large as 12 gbs. I don't know exactly what this file does but it grows constantly. Think it monitors all changes that happen to the OS. This file alone will eat up a big portion of what I have left on the EMMC. Not like you can swap out to a larger SSD on these things.
NO
Why? Because the component store (\Winsxs) is needed to repair the OS binaries in the event that a file becomes corrupted or, in worst case scenarios, compromised. There are a few directories in the component store so lets look at them and what their general role is in Windows.
\Winsxs\Catalogs: Contains security catalogs for each manifest on the system
\Winsxs\InstallTemp: Temporary location for install events
\Winsxs\Manifests: Component manifest for a specific component, used during operations to make sure files end up where they should
\Winsxs\Temp: Temp directory used for various operations, youll find pending renames here
\Winsxs\Backup: Backups of the manifest files in case the copy in \Winsxs\Manifests becomes corrupted
\Winsxs\Filemaps: File system mapping to a file location
\Winsxs\<big_long_file_name>: The payload of the specific component, typically you will see the binaries here.

Toshibas first Windows Tablet announced at IFA
8'' Windows 8.1 (x86, not RT) tablet featuring a Bay Trail-T processor for $330! November launch.
The Encore is an 8-inch tablet that runs Windows 8.1. Toshiba has announced that it has worked closely with Microsoft to ensure that the tablet is optimised for Windows 8.1, which is set to launch in October. The tablet also features dual-microphones and is certified for Skype.
This is Toshibas first tablet in the Windows ecosystem. The Encore features an 8-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800, and is powered by Intels new quad-core Bay Trail processor. In a benchmark that was released yesterday, it was revealed that the Bay Trail Z3770 processor scored three times what the current-gen Clover Trail Z2760 scored.
The Encore also features 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, which can be extended by another 32 GB through the micro-SD card slot. The tablet comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera at the back and a 2-megapixel camera at the front. The Encore comes loaded with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 and the Xbox SmartGlass software which allows it to be used as a second screen for the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One, when it launches.
The tablet also features Micro-USB and Micro-HDMI ports, and connects using Wi-Fi. Toshiba has mentioned that the tablet will be available starting November and that it will cost $330.

$330 is the new iPad Mini territory and that is likely to ship with Retina display. Even the $100 cheaper Nexus 7 has a 1900x1200 screen. :\
Is a fast CPU and Windows worth $100 and a worse display in a tablet? If you think so you'll be the 1 in 1000 that buys this instead.
Faster CPU, probably twice the RAM of the next iPad mini, microSD slot, full Windows 8.1 x86 experience for the same price of an A5/A6-based iPad with OS? Yes, I'll be one of those 1/1000. And I'd also pick a U$499 10'' Bay Trail-T tablet with 1080/1600p resolution instead of a full size iPad too.
Yes you will be perhaps not one in thousands but one in hundred to do so. What will you use it for?
Have you tried those low res screens?. Its a hell. I just say before anyone goes and buys office on a 8 low res tablet, better try the alternatives and judge if you realle need anything more than quad krait 300 cpu speed. Its plenty.
The comparison to apple speed is a little off. Apple sell tons of ip4.
The low-res 1024x768 screen didnt stop Apple from selling millions. Very far from ''hell'', it's actually a pretty good IPS screen. I can say that because I have an iPad mini. Fun toy, but a Windows tablet with similar size would allow me to leave my laptop at home much more often than a low-end Android/iOS device. Maybe the average joe that only does web browsing and casual gaming doesnt share this opinion, but many people do.
Who in their sane mind - sorry - thinks a cpu in 2013 can sell low res windows tablets.
Its just not going to happen. Period.
And practically no one will buy this 8 low res stuff. And neither will you. Get real.
Nice! Looks like I need to prepare my wallet for the hurting I'm going to put to it by the end of the year.

People care about performance. If a Bay Trail Windows tablet/laptop is noticeably faster than a Clovertrail model they will look for the Bay Trail-T stuff.
Why? Will you punch me if I buy this just because there isnt an AMD CPU inside?
Surface might not be an iPad killer but it was pretty succesful compared to other Windows tablets and that was Tegra 3 + Windows RT. Call me crazy but I think a similarly priced Bay Trail + Windows 8.1 tablet (8-10'') with good build quality and decent screen would do pretty well.
There's a pretty obvious difference between what one can accomplish with Windows 8.1 and Android. Come on. Android is nice for the simple stuff like media consumption, but having the option for a full fledged Windows 8.1 system for 300$? Sounds good to me. Although I do agree I would like a higher resolution, even if it costs more.
On that note, this leaves Windows RT in an even more undesirable position. If Bay Trail T can do full Windows 8.1 at a 300$ price point, what's the point of Windows RT existing *at all*? Microsoft should just ditch Windows RT and forget it ever happened. It's quite obvious that the entire premise behind RT was a mistake. I'm sure Surface RT 2.0 will fail just as the original did, although I *am* very excited for the second generation Surface Pro. I thought the Surface Pro was an excellent product.
Anyway, back to Bay Trail T and Windows 8.1 - I'm guessing the lion's share of the cost with these devices is not Bay Trail-T, but rather the Windows OS license. Android (which is free) can run on Bay Trail as well, so i'm confused as to why vendors have not opted for a full fledged Bay Trail android device yet. It is obviously early in the game, though. We haven't seen anything yet, so to speak, with regards to Bay Trail. A month or two from now will paint a much more clear picture.
Yes i will punch you if you buy it
Fortunately that situation will not happen.
I dont care what cpu is inside but you seem to do. You just have to explain to me why others want to pay for this low res win and not eg. The nexus 7.
Is it speed? Excell?
Just plain tell me because i dont understand it!
...Because it can run a real OS with real programs (e.g. Office) and not just small apps, meaning you can use it as a laptop replacement?
No, that can't be it.
you would be surprised by some of the things android can do...
