Venice, what is the verdict?

Do it overclock better than Winchester?

Is it worth of the extra cost over Winchester?

PS. I'm asking because I'm going to buy Athlon 64 S939 processor, probably 3200+.

I think you're going to have to wait a few weeks to find out for sure about this, most venice's have just started shipping.

You can buy an OEM if you want. I'd get the retail version myself. From NewEgg's site.

What is the warranty for CPUs? How does the CPU warranty work?

OEM CPUs
Refund period: 7 days from original invoice date.
Replacement period: 30 days from original invoice date

Retail CPUs
Refund period: 7 days from the original invoice date.
Replacement period: CPU manufacturers generally offer a 3-year warranty on retail processors. Please contact the manufacturer directly for specific warranty Terms and Conditions.

You can buy an OEM if you want. I *think* AMD OEM warranties are only for 30 days.
OEM warranties are only from the OEM, AMD gives NO warranty on OEM chips sold to end users.

That depends on what stepping Venice you get, and what stepping Winchester you get. If you get an ABBLE or LBBLE Venice, those seem to be the ones that hit 2.8 GHz... if you compare it to a CBBID Winchester that normally tops out around 2.4 GHz, then yes, it's definately better. But if you compare a CBBLE Venice to a CBBHD Winchester, there's hardly any difference between them.

Since SSE3 doesn't seem to do much of anything for the Athlon-64, that's not really a reason to chose a Venice over a Winchester.

Basically, if you're going to overclock, you want an ABBLE or LBBLE stepping Venice rather than any Winchester. If you want a cool running processor, the Venice creates slightly more heat than a Winchester at the same speed and voltage, so go with a Winchester.

at the end of the day Winchester is being fazed out, at the mo i wouldnt advise any winchester users with 2.5Ghz and over to purchase a venice in hopes of a higher OC, becasue at the moment it is not worth it, as they will not gain that much of an OC ... where as the new buyers i would recommend to purchase a venice over winchester as it costs a tad bit more for better performance and OC ability..

We don't need to... the information is here, you just have to look for it. The problem is, when everyone has a question about these new cores, they want all the information consolidated in THEIR thread... which is why I didn't give any links for proof. The info is already here on these forums, on the first page.

^if you want to make sure you're getting a specific stepping, then the only way is to look at the CPU itself. Local store is the only way.

Doesn't the Venice core allow you to run with all 4 memory banks full @ DDR400, whereas Winchester runs all 4 memory banks full at DDR333?

yes but still 2T command rate

EDIT: if using double sided DIMMS that is

Not that big of a deal, 2T vs. 1T is not very dramatic at all..

1-5 %

Being on the lower end of that..
