Thanks a ton! The Megahalem / Megashadow looks just a little bit thicker, but if it's going to get in the way the Venemous X probably will anyway.

Last question - which, in your opinion, has a better mounting system? My primary concerns of course are making good contact and ease of installation.

Thanks again.

IMO, both of systems, installations and contacts are the same.
But...When the VenoX was under the maximum pressure, it's still a little bit slippery, just a little bit. :hmm:

When I get my CPU back I'll do more tests. I'll also probably pick up the h50 though before that time.

After having owned a Megahalem - you can count me in the hating camp.

I'm done with air coolers, they all have terrible retention mechanisms.

They are telling me that the snap on fan shroud from the TRUE REV C does NOT fit the VX at ALL!

I hate the clips and the RevC shrouds don't fit!
The clips require open flanged fans (the Gentle Typhoons are NOT!) so the only way to use these fans is with wire ties. (that's actually how we roll because I don't trust clips in the long run).

At least these clips go through holes so if the fan would fall from getting bumped the clip will stay in place. The clips are conductive so falling on a running PCB would not be good.

I don't have hard numbers but it looks like a tie with Mega shadow right now.

I know there's not too many hardcore users here but I wonder if anyone has considered modifying the screw to increase pressure higher?

Very easily accomplished.

It could be dangerous if you go too far though...

Wah, can you share that? I'm very interesting.

Wah, can you share that? I'm very interesting.

Basically you're lengthening the screw so it increases downward pressure even more. Of course there's the point of diminishing return and the possibility of doing irreversible damage to the motherboard is very real. If you suddenly lose 4GB of RAM (12GB six pieces system) then tension is too high. BACK OFF! Leave things alone and it should be OK.

Of course if you're wrenching it down and hear crackling that wouldn't be good either. Not sure how much to add or try as a jig has not been made to measure pressure increase per 1/000 of length increase. I'm sure it's quite significant per seemingly tiny amounts of increase in length.

As for the heatsink twisting IT'S SUPPOSED TO! This is NOT a captive mount! If you insist on making it that way you need to modify the bracket with something that sticks out a few mm and then drill the top of the block on the HS in the corresponding place. When this is done it will be impossible to twisted when mounted. But it's completely un-necessary. Otherwise engineers at Thermalright would've made it that way!

Hm, then perhaps the L1BX would be a better choice.

The motor noise is there, even when I run it at 5v. It's a nice fan, but you should look up sound recordings on YouTube - I think martinm210 posted some.

I never really saw the incredible quality that Panaflo was supposed to have, then again the first ones I ever bought were after they stopped making them in Japan, so don't know if that's the difference.

You can certainly sub for a stiffer spring too. Of course without proper equipment you really don't know the mechanical parameters you're changing by using a stiffer spring.

So how are the reviews on Venomous X going?

A couple I looked at showed mixed results, but I haven't been looking that deep.

Ok now I can say I'm impressed with the VX!
Where it really shows its strength is with lower airflows. I gained 1-2 degrees C from going to a pair of 1800RPM Gentle Typhoons to a single 120MM fan (the one that comes with the H50 that is nearly silent). I figured with the lower airflow temperatures would soar but they barely budged! In the RV02 with a stock clock (W3530) I'd be willing to bet this cooler could run passive just relying on the airflow from the bottom 180mm fans. Even a moderate oc to 3.2GHz would not be out of the question in the scheme of things.

Testing continues...

Hey rubycon, good to know you got your vx, let us know how it compares with mega/true variants. I think that decreased fin density by 19% is for low flow performance, that's something they took from mega. but considering silence is important nowadays this is a good thing to have. let us know how your test goes.
