Ah, but the drive is the same since my CW4802 works perfectly with all 3 firmwares, 150D, 150E, and 150F.

Thanks for the info

Can someone tell me the difference (if there is any) between these three cd drives? We have the Verbatim (Office Max deal), the Sony (Office Depot) and the Best Buy (Universal Buslink) and they all seem to be Lite Ons! And they also seem (to me at least) to be the same thing! I only need one of the darned things! So which to buy? Which would you choose as your first burner? Any quality difference between them, or are any of them older/newer models? Any help appreciated. And as you can probably tell...I'm new here. So howdy everyone! I like the place so far.

The Sony's have a rounded tray cover that sticks out a little bit, might also be more "bulky", in case a CD does shatter in the drive. Lite-On's have a flat front. The Sony's also have this "Turbo" feature, in which you have to hold down the eject button for a few seconds after sticking in the disc, in order to use it at speeds faster than 40x. Lite-Ons don't have this restriction. Sony's come with B's Recorder, and B's UDF writer software. I think BusLink Lite-Ons come with OEM Nero. Not sure what Verbatims include.

I think that the BusLink drives that say "Smart-Burn" on the front of the box are just straight-up packaged OEM Lite-On drives bundled with Nero. Sony's have the slightly-modified firmware ("Turbo" feature), slightly more sturdy front bezel, and come bundled with B's Recorder. Not sure what the warrantee differences are, if any.

Verbatim/Cendyne (they are the same company) re-label more than just Lite-On drives, so it is a sort of chance if you actually get a Lite-On in the box. All Sony IDE CD-RWs 32x and up are modified Lite-On drives, and all BusLink drives that say "Smart-Burn" on the box are always Lite-Ons.

After all of that, my personal preference is for the generic, cheap, BusLink drives, they are usually cheaper after rebate than the Sony. I personally own the Sony CRX210E, but I didn't purchase it, it was a gift.

You forgot to mention that the Sony 48x24x48 (CRX215A1) can be upgraded (including your Sony CRX210E) to 52x and after you do that you wouldn't need to use that "Turbo" feature.

I returned my BenQ. Didn't really need it and a BenQ is not what I wanted. I guess they work but are picky on media.

With all the Benqs, Optorites, Aopens out their i wonder if Lite-on is even selling into the rebadge market that much anymore.

Tell me about it. I had to return the Benq I got at office Max because it kept burning coasters with my memorex cds, my other CDRW had no complaints with em. Hope theres another CDRW sale next this week.

dude doubleposted trying to bust somebody else out o well
that's right on both accounts about the benq. works beautiful out the box, then starts balking as if it was married. also that it's picky about media
pretty sure it works fine with kypermedia--haven't had problems with it or the hi-val 16x, that kind of flavor
good luck out there

Just dont' use crap media. All these 40x+ burners kind of need good quality media. Just look at the reviews of them at cdrlabs.com and cdr-info.com. The crappy media tends to have higher C1 errors then quality media. I tend to stick with Taiyo Yuden CDs and have been only using that brand CDRs for several years now. I haven't had any problems with my Optorite or the crappy 24x BTC burner I have. Believe it or not, media qualtiy does make a difference in the short term.

About the media, it even choked on the sample CDR that came with the drive. So go figure, I'd much rather wait for another liteon deal.

You may have just gotten a bad drive. Just so you know, the sample media it comes with is also crap. The one I got was made by CMC and it was crap. Most of the media out there is made by CMC and Ritek and in most cases they are crap for high speed CD-RW drives. The only good media I can find locally is Fuji(Taiyo Yuden) and Verbatim DataLife Plus(Mitsubishi Chemicals). The rest of the stuff is CMC and Ritek.

Does Benq = Aopen. I just got mine. Serial 913AD.................... which I assume from posts above is one of the two or both. Haven't had time to install it yet.

Apparently not.
The Aopens (AcerOpen) don't even look like Benqs even though Benq is a division on Acer. Who nows what factory these things are coming out of.

The AOpens have an eliptical shaped door and use Just link. I have a TDK that uses Just link. Probably made for them by AOpen.
Last rebage I got was a 48x12x50. Works well.

The Benqs say 48x16x48 and uses seamless link. Usually have a grate along the bottom of the bezel and 3 concave ridges side to side across the top of the case and have a rectangle shaped door.

Liteons have a flush retangle door and will say LTR in the serial.

Optorites have a door thats straight on top and rounded on the bottom.

BTC should be thrown away...

I recalled one being manufactured by "Top-X" or something dunno what that is.

Got an AOpen, elliptical door, also. I'm not used to these high speed burners, my old one is a Creative 6424, man this drive is LOUD. Sounds like an airplane's prop at full throttle.
Anyways, burned an iso image (650+MB) onto the sample CDR at 48x, seems OK.

Isn't that all so wonderfully confusing? Acer (now "BenQ") make their own drives. AOpen ("Acer Open"), which is a member of the "Acer Group" conglomerate, actually sells re-labled drives from other mfg's besides Acer. Traditionally, AOpen have often bunded relabled Ricoh drives in the past. I believe that "JustLink" is a Ricoh term for their version of "Burn-Proof" (Sanyo's term), so the drive is probably a relabeled Ricoh, or using a Ricoh chipset.

FYI, just ran CD Speed on the Aopen, not bad.

Speed 22-48X CAV (36.30 X average)
Elapsed time: 2:39
on a 80min cdr

My 40X Liteon takes about 3:03 but I haven't flashed it to 48X yet.

I was seriously considering taking advantage of this deal because the I/O Magic 48x16x48 CD-RW (which as it turns out is a BenQ) I bought from Circuity City during the "BLACK FRIDAY" Holiday weekend (for $19.99 after 2 $30MIRs) turned out to be a piece o' crap! :disgust:

Given that these Verbatim's may be BenQ's as well (or more specifically, apparently aren't LITE-ON's), I decided to go for the OfficeDepot Sony 48x24x48 CD-RW (re-branded LITE-ON) deal talked about in this thread.

The short version: The I/O Magic (BenQ) drive couldn't SUCCESSFULLY handle my NAME BRAND Fujifilm 16x CD-R's @ faster than 12x. My old QPS 24x CD-RW used to burn at 24x on that very same media (from the same spindle).

The long version: With the stock firmware of the BenQ (A.K.Z), it wouldn't let me burn the CD's faster than 16x; however, each time I tried burning at that speed, it would choke about 30% - 35% through w/ a Buffer Underrun error (so much for the Burnproofing technology of the drive). After I upgraded the firmware to the latest available on BenQ's web-site (A.Y.Z I believe), it would allow me to burn on that media as high as 24x; however, while the burns would in fact "complete" (whether I burned at 24x or 16x); when actually TRYING OUT the CD's, they were bad! I was burning 700mb GHOST Images, and to verify that they were good, I tried copying the images from the burned CD's back to my HD (in both the I/O Magic/BenQ drive & my LITE-ON DVD-ROM Drive). The files copies failed w/ a media read error. (The CD's I produced when burning @ 12x were ok though; however, I didn't purchase a 48x drive to only be able to record at 12x!)

I returned the I/O Magic drive to CC, got in on that Sony deal at OfficeDepot, and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

BenQ = BAD :disgust:
LITE-ON = GOOD
