Just got back from the Best Buy in secaucus, NJ....they had several of the verbatim that were $19.99 after rebate. But they were out of the buslink liteon for $29.99 even though the tag was there. So I picked up the Verbatim. It says Part# VBT522452A amd the Serial # is 2CDM222482 so I dont think mine's a liteon. But as long as it works with Nero and CDRWIN it doesnt really make a difference to me. Since its a gift for my g/f I havent opened it yet. One thing I'm worried about is that it says "Buffer underrun protection" but does not say anything about it other than having a large buffer.

Found a flash file and flashed it to the most recent version 6S0D. Everything seems great.

Turns out the version of bios on the drive was 6s0C, so it wasn't too old.

If you want a self flashing firmware that you can just do in windows, try Here. Worked just fine for me.

Yeah, I gave that a shot. Didn't work.

Firstly, thank you to Bigsmooth for the deal. I was late to the gate, but I just got back from my BB and got this deal for $9.99 because it was opened; I'm sure it was someone expecting a Lite-On or at least the Verbatim...since this had NO Badge....the sticker though shows this is a sealed new ASUS CRW5224A, which is their current very hot CD burner.

These are selling between $55-70 and is ASUS latest and current model. For those fortunate enough to get this model, be sure to get the latest manual and firmware upgrade from the ASUS website. link Enjoy!

Next day's installation. All is well; flashed my firmware with ASUS's windows enabled executable. Enterprise edition Nero 5.5.10.15 recognized it immediately. All the diagnostics spec out well and the connections including sound plays. LOL; I'm so glad I've got a DVD drive also because the 12,000 rpm this twirls at is definitely audible. No wonder it's the fastest/one of the fastest drives on the market depending on the category. I wouldn't use it as a source drive to play mp3s. That whooshing sound is a spinning piece of plasticl

P.S. Thanks for the review link unclebud. I repeated the source measures and they can be dupolicated. This is a fine product.

FYI, my roommate and I both got this drive at Best Buy at the same time. He got a Verbatim and I got a Lite-On, although I know his is a Lite-On re-badged. We both had a 12 digit serial number and everything seemed the same.

To those who've flashed their Verbatim drive to Lite-On, did you use the utility that flashes the Verbatim firmware to Lite-On's 6S0A first? I'm assuming after you flash it to 6S0A one can go and flash it to 6S0D.

That's the way the instructions read, but I tried to do that and my drive hosed on me. I assumed my Verbatim drive was a Lite-On based on the serial number being all digits, but it did not like that 6S0A firmware flash at all. I couldn't even flash back to the original Verbatim firmware I just just successfully read from the drive. I had to return it and I got a Buslink, which was a straight-up Lite-On.

Maybe I'm just a wanksta...worked out better for me in the end though this way, no rebates. Good luck.

Although the Verbatim-LiteOn has the correct s/n, I believe it ID's the drive as a Verbatim. If so, you MUST use mtkflash to flash it to any Liteon 52246S firmware. From then on, you can use the Windows Liteon flasher. Also, you could have used mtkflash to "fix" your dead Verbatim if it was a liteon 522452AL Verbatim!

Nope, hadn't seen that. It seems like either drive is a pretty good choice, although if you read the Lite-On review they like it a little better.

>Unless you can't find the Lite-Ons, don't go with the ASUS drive.

Why?

Dude, I tried. First thing I did was use mtkflash to back up the Verbatim firmware that was already on the drive. I noticed that BIN file was about 50k, and the LiteOn BIN was about 500k, so that made me nervous. I went ahead and flashed the LiteOn FW thinking that I can always go back to the Verbatim...well mtkflash reported no errors, said OK at every step, I rebooted and nada...no drives detected. Tried to flash back to the Verbatim FW, again mtkflash gave no errors, said OK at each step...rebooted and nada, still no drive detected. The drive was secondary slave, no other drives attached, and mtkflash was 1.62 I believe. Trust me, I followed it all to the letter. No big loss for me since I just returned it for the Buslink (Lite-On) and I am much happier not having to deal w/rebates. Just be careful. I assumed I could go back to the Verbatim FW, and I couldn't...be warned.

OK, but the file should have been the same size. That was a clue. A mtkflash 4 c would have let you see if it said the flashprom was a known one. Also, I assume you used the /b /m switches. As you said, all worked for you OK anyway!

I did not use the /m switch. I ran this to read the original FW:

mtkflash 4 r /b verbatim.bin

Then I ran this to write:

mtkflash 4 w /b 6s02.bin (for Lite-On FW) / mtkflash 4 w /b verbatim.bin (for original FW)

Just for my own education, did I do it wrong? Yes it all has worked out for me in the end, but I would like to know for my own sake.

I'm not the resident expert, but my understanding is that the Lite-Ons don't have alphanumeric serials, just 12-digits.

You'll most likely get an ASUS drive from that box. Try your luck with a box showing 12 digit S/N instead.

Yes, it was wrong. The reason mtkflash said all was OK was without the /m it did not read or write ALL banks. It did what you told it to do OK though.
Just look at the screen. I believe /b is because it does NOT default to a bin image and the /m is to process the complete file. It merges all banks to 1 file with /m.

Actually, with your new drive, try a mtkflash 4 r /b /m test.bin and see if you now get the correct filesize. I assume you kept it as secondary slave or the 4 will need to change.
