just went to local best buy, looks like they dont have any Lite Ons. I checked all of the serial numbers on the boxes and they are all alphanumeric. I bought one last time and got lucky. And yes, Im still waiting for the verbatim rebate. I wanted to buy another, i guess i'll pass on this one.

Thanks for the info DefRef (on how to identify Verbatim Lite-Ons).
Got to the store and found only one box on the shelf. It had an all-numeric serial number, but it was an "open box" (taped securely shut).
I was worried somebody had already purchased it and found out it was not a Lite On and returned it.
Took a chance and bought it anyway, turned out it was a Lite-on, and I got it for $10 cheaper ($5 after rebates)!

Sounds like a hot deal for me but which one is the verbatim rebate? the $30 or $15? I'm getting tired of rebates so if I lose $15 it wont hurt as much as the $30.

CD-Rs for $2 each? I bought a bunch for $5 each and at the time that price was a bargain. And yes, once you factor in the Adaptec SCSI controller it required, my first burner set me back about $700. How far we have come....

If it's not too far off topic I remember paying $40 for a box of ten 5¼" floppy disks. At 180K each, that box had an inexhaustable 1.76MB of storage. If you were brave and cut out a tab on the opposite side of each disk you got double the storage, for an incredible 3.5MB.

Great deal on the Lite-On BTW...thanks!

Nice, thanks for breaking the topic out of the best buy thread, I proably wouldn't have seen it there. I'll have to stop at BB this week. Sounds pretty hot to me

Same here. Damn you, Verbatim!!! :|

At least the drive has been great. I didn't even bother to flash the Verbatim firmware to Lite-On because it works perfectly as-is.

Glad everyone's digging this deal and the trip down Burner Memory Lane, but the main credit should go to Harvey for pointing this out in the first place on the other thread. This is what makes ATHD such a good place to save (while spending!) a lot of cash.

Would someone confirm this:

I thought the verbatim lite-ons had vbt-xxxxxxxx in their part/serial number. Are you guys saying that the vbt isn't present?

Greetings. I pickup one up today. Mine was an Asus CRW-5224A. The serial number was in the pattern: ##AA######. Had to update the Nero software to get it to work. Pretty sweet. How does this unit compare to the Lite On? Regards.

The Lite-On I purchased had two bar codes next to each other on the label.
The left one said serial number and had all digits under the bar code. The right one said "PART# VBT522452A" on top.

It should be just fine. Even if the Lite-On is "best", it's not like the others suck or something.

I got one too, BB here had 5 on the shelf, and only one was all serial numbers, and I got it - and it's a Lite-On, says so on top. Has 52x24x52 in gray on the lower right corner, I'm kind of happy it doesn't say Verbatim across it in big red letters like it shos on the box (in fact, i think the picture on the box had that photoshopped onto it).

It was wild, over 5 drives there were 3 completely different methods for writing the serial numbers. I wonder how many places these things came from? But it worked, the one with NO letters was a Lite-On.

If you're not picky about such things, there's also a 48x free-after-rebate at OfficeMax. The local OM STILL has stock, I'm amazed.

Viva la ATers!!!

OK, $15 for a 52x/24x/52x Lite-On is great. The all-numeric serial number was right on the money. I bought mine at the Customer Service desk at BB (amazingly no waiting in 1000 Oaks, CA) and opened it right there. It was a Lite-On.

So it's home and installed, but then came the best part. I've got 2/3rd's of a 100-cnt spindle of blank Memorex 12x CDs just waiting for me to burn 'em. The 12x matched my old burner and they're only $.10 per disc thanks to ATers, of course. Still, I hate to waste. So I decide to burn those 12x discs at 52x.

Perfect. Not a flaw. I use the boxed Nero software to direct copy "on the fly" a couple of music CDs and they're done in no time. I'm listening to the last song on the second of the two and there hasn't been a single flaw -- they sound GREAT.

And I'm POSITIVE that ATers deserve full credit for the 52X pieces. I learned about Taiyo Yuden's here, so the entire spindle of CD-R, Cyanine // ATIP=97m 24s OLf // 702.38 MB (79m 59c 72f) // Taiyo Yuden // DX-dye must be able to handle more than four times their rated capacity! Thanks, AT!
