I'm in for one. I am almost out of the current 20 disc spindle. And they are good with no coasters.

Sweet, thanks.
I'm in dire need of blank DVD-9 media, and I only buy good stuff like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

Watch out. Both spindles I received were made in India (don't burn at >2.4x). You'd want made in Singapore (burn at up to 6x).
There's also a deal for a 25pk of Sony DLs at BestBuy for $29.99. Again grab those that are made in Singapore (MKM media code - basically Verbatims in disguise). Made in Taiwans are Riteks.

Why is it that more than three years after I bought my first DL burner these discs are still >$1 each? After the same amount of time CD's and DVD's were pennies.

This is a very good question, and I'm not sure that anyone has a good answer. I do know that I predicted two years ago that DVD recorders would be replaced by the next generation recorders (HD or Blu-Ray) without dual-layer recording ever becoming popular. When CD recorders first became affordable, there was a ground-swell of enthusiasm in the market. The same was true for the first affordable DVD recorders. But not for dual-layer DVD.

Thanks for the info. I trust India-mfd media about as far as I can throw it. A few years back, I had numerous Verbatim-branded CD's mfd by Moser Baer factory develop unreadable sectors within 6 months of burn. Utter garbage. That was the end of me buying anything other than Japanese-made optical media.

What I read (at least 2 years ago) was that they had a lot of trouble with manufacturing DL discs, couldn't get decent yields. I don't know if that's still the issue, after all this time you would think they would have solved it.

I don't have much to base this on, but the pessimist in me wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens with the new formats, that only the lowest capacity HD-DVD (15 GB) and Blu-Ray (25 GB) ever become truly cheap. Hopefully I'm wrong. As it is, my gut feeling is that it's going to take at least 18 months before even those lowest capacity discs get close enough to the $1/disc range that I'm remotely interested.

aside from any issues in the manufacturing process, there probably isn't as much demand for them.

first, they usually burn at a much slower rate than single layer discs, so any work can be done quicker using multiple singles.

second, very few things won't fit on a single layer disc but will fit on a dual layer discs. most dvd movies can be shrunk down to a single layer for use in the kids room, on a road trip, etc.

third, even though they offer double the space, it really isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. a 200 gig hard drive still requires 24 of these things to back up. combined with the slower burn rate, it takes a lot longer to do a back up (not that i would bother backing up a huge hard drive with dvds anymore, i doubt i'd even do it with HD-R or BD-R discs)
