Best buy sell Verbatim Dual dvd/r drive for $149.99.It comes with nero ,windvd and another dvd software. i bought one last night but i have not put it on my system yet . but i heard good things about Verbatim .bestbuy.com

Looks from the support site (www.v-pgi.com) like you could get either a Ricoh or a NEC drive. Anyone know how to tell which from the outside of the box?

Hmm...OD also sells this drive. Too bad it's special order only, otherwise would've been able to do a Price match + $20 Off. So that would be $149.99 - $20.00 = $129.99 + Tax. I guess since Best Buy is free shipping, you could also request free shipping from OD? Comments welcome.

Didn't Cendyne buy the rights to use the Verbatim name? And now that Cendyne is out of business, that means no warranty/support for this drive. I think I'll pass.

I sure that now that stores know about Cendyne going out of business they will be trying to dump all of their Cendyne/Verbatim products as fast as they can on to their clueless customers before they lose any more money on all of their unsold Cendyne/Verbatim products.

I haven't dealt with any of the pricewatch low price leaders carrying the NEC1300a, but you can get it for 149.99 shipped from Newegg. OEM, beige or black bezel. $154.99 to get some garbage Roxio software bundled with it.

I would say it's bad.. You can get the NEC and Optorite cheaper than this and they come with warrenties.. Maybe if you had a large GC you wanted to use then maybe it's a decent deal.

It is a quality drive so the chances of it breaking are slim, but they are still there..

I caught one of these tonight and picked it up figuring I could always take it back if the reviews were bad. C|Net gave it a decent review but dinged it for slow rewrite speeds. Some questions:

* What model is it exactly? What does Device Manager report? The Verbatim firmware page has choices for Ricoh and NEC drives and the NEC DL is for a ND1000A, not a 1300. A ruling, please?

* Any media finickiness?

* C|Net said it was NEC hardware like the TDK. Their roundup is here.

CNet is right. Both drives are based on the NEC ND-1300A. Actually, if you buy the Verbatim, it is an ND-1300A. No modifications were done.

I bought one and burned a perfect DVD using Memorex DVD+R media. Just need to find some good .vob editing software now.
