I make backups regularly though. Maxtor sucks so bad, I've come to rely on it.

Man how do you get so lucky, I still got a Bigfoot 8Gig that just wont die.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the dateline of your first link, 2004-06-28?

The date of your post, and the start of this thread, was on "10/26/2004 03:57 PM". Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's four months later.

Interestingly enough, that was going to be one of my comments when you first posted that - isn't that just 'old news'?

So what motivation did you have, to start this thread, with such an old news headlines? Out of spite? Propeganda? Clearly with such old news, it couldn't have been to "simply inform".

Isn't it obvious, Larry?

He's a Seagate corporate whore.

My experience with Maxtor goes back to the late 80's when 1 MB of RAM was top end and hard drives were measured in single digit MB's as well.
Since then I've gone through several, sorry haven't kept track of exactly how many, but I've opted for 'em over and over after reading reviews or by suggestion/advise of others and over again have been disappointed with their performance in the reliability dept.
They've all since failed and had to be replaced, only 2 that still had warranty and were refurbished and sent back.It was an extreme PITA to say the least and both those only lived a short while thereafter. That was the end of Maxtor for me and that was a few years back ~1997?During this period I also tried Fujitsu & Quantum.Lousy performance and also failures.I'd rate 'em a tad worse than Maxtor even since they failed even earlier.
Since then I've only gone WD & Seagate & IBM.My IBM deskstars of course were the plagued "Deathstars" I will never tough an IBM product again either.
WD - had 2 drives crap out within <2 years time.
Seagate is the only brand hard drive maker that has not failed me since I've first started using them x 7 - 8 years ago.
Overall I'm inclined to stay with Seagate since they've offered good performance(maybe not the best in tests),silence, reliability.
The latter is what's most important since a hard drive is afterall data STORAGE!
And seeing that all the other brands have failed me and those I built computers for in unacceptable time limits,Seagate get's my recommendation for realiability.

Looking back I have to say that Maxtor,Quantum & Fujitsu have been total crap and a waste of money & time.I'd smile if they went under

Maxtor R.I.P
Quantum R.I.P.
Fujitsu R.I.P.

Man, what do you do with hard drives? Sounds like you have a 90% failure rate! It seems to me like there is a whole lotta user error going on here.

If it pleases you read some of the more recent links posted. There are several only weeks old showing that Maxtor has an ongoing problem.

I also will go on the record as I do not work in any corporate offices. I am a lowly submanager, non-sales or marketing employee who is dodging lay-offs to keep his job.

Define user error??!?!?

Once a HD is installed you either use it to store and read data from or you don't.

I defragment only when I accumulate a significant amount of new data or delete a significant amount.Prior to & after program installations/uninstallations.just like you're supposed to.

Tell me how you came up with a 90% failure rate?
Regardless,a 90% failure rate is actually pretty fkn good considering EVERYONE ELSE has 100% failure rates ............ eventually!

90% was a guess based on your quotes. And actually, I do not have anywhere near 100% failure rate because I sell them and upgrade every couple years.

Anyway, about your original question, overclocking a PCI bus will mess up a hard drive, a bad virus can mess up a hard drive, and manhandling IDE cables to where pins are bent can mess up your hard drive. I have personallly seen all this happen.

What I am saying is either you are doing something wrong to make your drives die prematurely (I would expect any hard drive out there to last a decade at least) or you are full of crap!

baumerz id appreciate it if youd chill on the posts. its friggin annoying having to scroll through another ten consecutive posts of yours to finally find one thats not been posted by you. the last harddrive i bought was a seagate and like all harddisks ive owned (30+) it has never given me any trouble, being the newest its naturally the biggest and fastest ive ever ran too so im overall happy with it.
however seagate hires annoying lamers and i will probably refrain from purchasing another seagate drive as its very unpleasant to know that a part of my money even tho an insignificantly small part will end up in your pocket if i chose to do so.
