Dear fellow forum readers,

I currently have cingular, and yes, it does suck. I'm thinking of switching to verizon this weekend, possibly a family plan. I looked up their phones on their websites, and they all look pretty crappy. I have the motorolla v60g right now, but i cant use it with verizon cause it's a gsm phone. Do you guys use verizon? I'm sure somebody on this forum has got to use verizon. Anybody has a suggestion for a good phone? I want something really small and light that won't bulge out of my pocket. Also, since the phones in store are really overpriced, have anybody tried to buy another phone that is compatible with the verizon network and just call it in to have it activated? I heard that it is easy to do wth cingular (and they also have a better selection) but that verizon is a bitch to try to get your own phone hooked up to the network. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I use Verizon, they have the best coverage but their phones all suck compared to anyone else.

I just switched over to verizon from US Cellular. The speaker in my phone died within a week which pissed me off. I got it replaced and the b!tch wanted to charge me $10 to transfer my phone contacts over so I told her to forget it. Verizon gave me credit for the time I didn't have service which was nice. I am using the LG VX6100 which is free after rebate in my area right now. I have a family plan with 2 other phones on it.

I have Verizon and have no complaints. I have a pretty basic older phone (Nokia 3589i) but it gets great reception (Tri-mode phone also) everywhere I go, and I frequently fly from Florida to Oregon. My company just switched from Sprint to Cingular and they also seem to be pretty happy with it.

Well, I don't have Verizon and probably will never switch unless their free phones get a lot better. I have two friends who signed up for Verizon for two years and they got these craptastic, huge, colorless, bar phones. On the other hand, I was a Cingular user and got the T616 unlocked phone for only a one year commitment. After my year with Cingular was up (and yes, Cingular sucks... especially customer service), I switched to Tmobile and kept using my T616 phone. The store gave me a HUGE rebate which nicely subsidizes the cell phone bill. So far (3 months), I've had great service on Tmobile. Of course, location is important. I'm in NYC, so there is almost always reception.

Granted, Verizon probably has better nationwide service, but if you generally stay in a urban area, Tmobile and Cingular will probably be about as good. This probably didn't help with your Verizon phone search at all, but oh well, it's off topic.

Not so sure on the "great Verizon coverage" actually. Seems like alot of the places they claim "coverage" are considered roaming/extended network... in other words, services like texting/voicemail get screwed up. WSU was like that until recently. I came back after spring break and... tada!... working text/page/voicemail

gsm phones are always better looking and everything.....I would go w/ tmobile, and if have the cash, buy your own unlocked gsm phone online and have them activate it

I just moved 2 lines from Verizon to Cingular. I am saving a lot of money, have better phones, and the service is the same if not better.

Verizon has better service compared to all the rest. Less dropped calls and the price of their plans is getting better. Rollover minutes will expire if not used and why pay for minutes that if you don't use in the first few months you will never use.

I just got the Nokia 6015i a motnh or two ago and love it.

Small, sleek, nice screen, and all for like $60 with a one year contract and the best service around. You might not think it was a great deal, and it wasn;t but I am very very happy

I am still saving over Verizon, and I have a way better phone. I haven't had one dropped call with Cingular since I've been with them.

The rollover minutes are good for a year on a rolling basis...I like the idea, as my usage changes with work and such...

Their phones areso industrial oh...oh so ugly. The only reason I got the Nokia was because it was the best looking of the bunch.

Verizon is the best service I've had so far, and I've had quite a few different ones. I was going to switch to cingular once to try the rollback thing, but it requires you to already have a high plan to start with. The whole point to rollback is that I don't use my minutes! I just bought a new Verizon CDM8910 camera phone a couple days ago, I like it. Does what it's supposed to do. Supposedly you can get everquest on it, that'd be interesting..

Has anybody used the Kyocera KX2? Is it small and comfortable against the ear? The V710 also looks pretty nice? Is it the same size as the V60 or is it bigger? And does it have an antenna that sticks out or is it internal? Also, anybody use the samsong or audiovox phones?

So it's not a good idea to just buy a phone that would work with the verizon network before going to their store to sign up for their plans, and then just tell them to activate my phone for my account?

And one more question, has anybody had problems transferring a phone number from a previous carrier to verizon? Thanks for all the help!

Have you thought about getting a unlocked unbranded phone ?
Do you know which cell tower you're connecting to ?

Cingular Orange or Blue ?
Which color chip do you have ?

Yeh, i'm looking for a verizon phone. And i'm not really sure what "unlocked" or " unbranded" means, but what i meant was something like i buy a cdma phone off ebay, and then call verizon and tell them to activate it, instead of buying an ovrepriced phone in the verizon store. can that be done or is it a pain in the ass? and has anybody here done that?

You said you currently have cingular.
Unbranded Unlocked phone won't have the Cingular software.
You can connect to T-mobile, ATT, and Cingular towers.

With Cingular branded locked phones, their priority is Cingular Towers even if there is little signal available.

I use an unbranded unlocked phone. When I'm home, I go on T-mobile Towers, when I'm at school I'm on ATT towers.

If you ar a new customer, get the best and cheapest/free phone from Verizon that you can. If you want to upgrade, ebay the phone and purchase the one you want for another source...ie ebay/ forums

Verizon's service is second to none, but some companies like Nextel have better phones.
