If you have a broadband router, you don't need to use ANY software.
The router automatically connects for you. You just have to set it up on the router.

Do they just upgrade your current line or do you have to cancel and reorder?

Anyway, thanks for posting this hot deal!!! I had no idea Verizon had new plans.

Just called 7-10 Days!

When you call it has an automatic voice recognition technology so you have to say the department you want. ask for - billing
They will run a test to see if you are within 12000 feet and then submit an order.
By the way i am ~9000 ft away and live in New Jersey

I called just now and am getting the $34.95 price, but am not qualified for the speed increase. Oh well, $5 bucks savings per month is still better than a kick in the groin.

That's the way I have it set up. Screw that PPPOE dialer crap. I suggest to anyone (even when we are setting up DSL for our employees) to get a router and let it do it's thing. A whole lot less heartache and home routers these days are so easy to set up and maintain.

If you search through the DSL reports thread, it seems they just upgrade you. Although some people were told by reps that they might get charged the higher rate but then have it credited back. I would definately call to verify what your billing would be like

That's the way I have it set up, too (currently thru an SMC wireless barricade). I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on something.

I just called Verizon and I've been told that my line doesn't qualify for the 1.5M speed upgrade... but I got my monthly rate reduced from $39.99 to $34.99... DSLreports.com CO distance finder shows only 4152 ft from my CO.... I told that to the rep and asked why I couldn't get the 1.5M speed. She asked me if I had any changes made on my phone line. I said no and she couldn't tell me why I couldn't get 1.5M. I know I can get 1.5M speed here because my friend who lived nearby(100 feet) had 1.5M/384K Verizon DSL last year.

Any suggestions?

Only thing i could think of is to ask to have a tech check your loop for you. They might do it, they might not. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Interestingly I have not too long ago been told that I could not get the 1.5Mbps service. Now, 6 months later I can get the service plus a lower monthly fee. I am one happy camper!

I could get slightly faster speeds from Comcast, but, Verizons NNTP server is worth a lot of money

Anyway, if you want to know what to do to about being denied the higher speeds, you are better of in the Verizon forum of dslreports.com. There is a number of very knowlegdgeable people. They can point you in the right direction. I remember something about presidential appeals. But even they can't do anything if you are within limits but your line is crappy.

Score!
A very easy deal, total time was ~10 mins including hold time. The 1.5 speed provision should take effect on about May 21st I was told. Verizon is really good for me.

I called again and the billing department did the line check both time.

WOOHOO! I'm getting 1.5Mbit on Tuesday!!! I called again and this time the rep said my DSL line qualifies for the 1.5M speed! I don't know if the rep I called earlier was lazy or something(I called at noon).

The rep I called earlier said she would run a test to see if my line qualifies and came back after only 20 seconds. I thought someone said he waited like 1-2 min for the line test so I think she either didn't run the test or there was some problem with their system. I'm not sure having DSL on while they test makes difference(I had DSL and computer on at home).

Anyway, I called again after work and this time I turned off my modem and the computer. Line testing took about 3 minutes and the rep came back and said mine qualifies! She said the speed change will be made in Tuesday!

Kind of wierd, but ALL other DSL providers still show as DSL not being available in my area. I've had verizon for close to 2 years now! Covad does do gAyDSL with the 144/144 for $90. Just wierd, VOL must be doing some sneaky stuff in my neighborhood!!! Either way, mine is still going to be upgraded by tuesday

Thanks LordThing!
I just called and they are supposed to upgrade me and change the billing in May 8. BTW the number to call does indeed seem to be 800-567-6789, I got through right away by asking for DSL Billing

Big Thanks.

Hmm, if you're a gamer. I would probably advise against getting in on this deal. I just drop my Verizon DSL connection of 768/768kb after months and months of horrobile ping times and poor newsgroup service. It was worst than my Phoenix dsl and Megapath SDSL connection 256K. My SDSL was much better until the provisionary(rhythms). That was the only reason i jumped on the VZ wagon back then. But now I have Comcast Cable 1.7/275kb and enjoying much better performance. The VZ email spam problem has grown even worst in the last 90days. If you're in boston 617 area. Highly advise against getting this connection from VZ. Poor. F+

Codeyf, The reason why Covad is price gouging like that is because of VZ in the first place. VZ leases out the lines to CV and CV is forced to pay a higher fee on the lines. In turn, charging you more. FCC stepped in sometime in 2002 i think to investigate on VZ for strongarm tatics here on the Northeast against the other ISP's wanting fair game.
