If you ever get any speeds that are >768, then you should be on the new package, especially since you're seeing 1300-1400. When you're on the slower package, the 768 is a hard limit, and you shouldn't see anything that is more than negligibly higher than that. The fact that you're getting 1300-1400 indicates that the upgrade did go through. The varying test results are merely due to fluctuations in Internet conditions. Plus, IMHO, dslreports.com's speed test is not reliable.

A good one that I've found is run by a popular DSL ISP, Speakeasy. They have locations all over the country, but the one I use to test is http://chi.speakeasy.net.

Not so much price gouging (it is a different xDSL covad is offering). It's as if Verizon has shut off their DSL network to other ISP's in my area. NO ONE else offers 768/128+ service in my area. It is ALL 144/144 only.

Also, my shizz was supposed to be upgraded today.....ran a few speed tests, actually running slower than I remember getting a couple months ago. Used to test in the mid-600k speeds. Now i'm in the low 500's

Will just give it more time I guess. Will shut off the modem completely tonight and check 'er in the AM.

If I goto www.bandwidth.com, I get around 1300k per second

If I goto Verizon test page, www.ba-hss.com, I get around 1400k per second

If I goto cnet's test page, I also get around 600k per second

Anyone with a conclusion, did the upgrade work or not? Thx for your time.

1. I can't even get the Java Applet on dslreports to show up
2. mid to hi 500's
3. hi 500's to low 600's.

I think it's safe to say my connection has not been upgraded yet.

The 128K cap is to prevent u from hogging upstream bandwidth? Well that's definitely not a good business plan. You've read some of the posts in this thread, if DSL wants cable's customers then providers are definitely going to have to jack that upstream cap without raising price.

Well, looks like my upgrade has gone thru. Not quite as high as I thought I'd be. Tests are turning up right around 1100k. Hive or take 50k on every test.

Didn't qualify for 1500, even though DSLReports says I'm under 10,000 ft from CO. I did switch from my old 640/90 to 768/128 and dropped the price by $5. I've been testing it (using www.ba-hss.com) and the download speed is still running around the low 500's.

Anyone know what Verizon does exactly? Is it some software setting that they change to alter the bandwidth cap? Or is it some physical hardware change? Or is it a combination of both?

I'd have to agree here....I had verizon dsl two years ago. I was told at the time I made my order I could use my hardwar router (NetGear RT 314) instead of their software. Got the service, set everything up with the router and was fine for about 3months. At some point, they changed their dns and a few other things causing me not to be able to connect or authenticate. I spent two weeks trying to work with their tech support (can you say clueless nimrods). They told me that until I installed their software (garbage) that they would not provide any support. They even put a note on my account that I was abusive to their techs and not to provide any assistance. At the same time this was going on, Comcast began offering cable modems in my area. I got the self install kit and was up and running in about 10 minutes. I called the Verizon business office, explained everything that happened and was promptly issued a credit for the entire time I had been using the service. I wouldn't use dsl from verizon if it was provided for free.

I cannot say how their service is now, but it used to be terrible. My point is that you shouldn't jump on somebody because they say verizon sucks. Ask them why. Some of us have very valid complaints and exercise our right to use another service.

im on the now prohibitively expensive comcast cable and am looking to DSL to lower my 50$/month cost. Does this 30$ come with the isp so its 30$ total or what? Also what about modem prices/installation or is that covered?

I can see how that would of sucked. I guess nowadays 3rd party compatibility is much improved, because I just bought a Netgear wireless router (MR814) and had no problem letting it interface with Verizon's DSL network -- everything proceeded automatic.

Yep, the $30/month includes the ISP (Verizon), as well as the modem and self-installation kit (very very easy)

This is the same applet as dslreports.com
It may be a different server as you say, but i got an error on my test and it took me to dslreports.com

Got my speed changed the other day. Verizons own speed test as well as most others show me having 1520kbps down, which I think is great. General web browsing doesn't seem much faster at all, but downloading large files sure has improved. As a matter of fact, i find it hard to find servers which can max the connection speed now!

Okay folks, a few things:

Signed up Last Saturday May3rd.
Told ?Activation? date would be next Monday, May 12th, and I would qualify for 1.5Mb, for the 29.95 rate. Got the Hardware yesterday, and hooked it all up, but of course just got the blinking green light on the DSL modem, no dice for connection. Today round 2pm I noticed a sold green light. SWEET. But here is were things got a bit weird. I tried using the phone, but I had no dial tone for about an hour, and I tried to set up the Verizon software but it would stall at the end?? So I decide to wait a while, then I call tech support to figure it all out. I spoke to a nice guy and we installed just WinPOET and that?s it. None o that other Verizon crap, that I?ll never know what I didn?t get. Then I was walked through account setup n stuff and we tested out my line initially VERRY DISSAPOINTED. But, a few more things to add:

1. www.Dslreports.com SAVED My Ass!! Seriously The initial line test showeed only speed of about 400k. WAAY below advertised speed. So I rememberd when I had DSL 3 years ago and how DSL a free applet called DRTCP you can download for free, which automatically enter in your desired resgistry RWIN and MTU (which for those of you out there who don?t know what that is, Windows controls how long it waits for your DSL signal) settings, instead of you having to do it manually. A real time saver.

2. So once I made my changes I played with my RWIN & MTU #?s for a while and now my download is 1520K a sec with a Transfer rate of usually 179K/sec.

3. Seriously, I highly recommend dslreports.com, and the Verizon tech support guy also had me use www.toast.com for speed testing; its great.

Well That?s it, and GOODBYE to AOL FOREVER, now I can post legit here for good. Will everyone welcome me back. Okay, now I?ll shut up. Now I really have some work to do, I have to setup my ?little? network here at home with my RP614NA Netgear Router.

If anyone has any questions/comments bout all o this, please feel free to badger or PM me or post in reply
