hmm, i wondering if i should jump on this. i currently have 1.5 down 384 up for 30 bucks a month. not bad considering cable prices are up to the gazoo. adding 15 bucks for a 3.0/768 connection sounds cool but don't think i can cough up the extra 15 bucks a month.

Just talked to Tech Rep, to find out what my existing speed is, he stated '384 up and 1.6 down.'

What does that mean? bytes or bits?

I then asked Tech but he didn't know.

TIA

the 1.6 ( i think you mean 1.5) is megabits p/second
the 384 is kb p/second

This sucks. I have Verizon for phone service here in Illinois and their test on their website tells me I cannot get dsl here in this town of about 13000. Meanwhile another town just 45 miles away that isn't even half our size gets dsl from Verizon. I'd be happy to see dsl offerred here let alone outright thrilled if I could 3.0/768. Local cable isp which is only broadband available is 3/256 for $45/mth if I also get cable tv through them. «sigh»

The numbers quoted are in kilobits (384) / megabits (1.6). This is how it is:

Download: 1.6 Mbps = 1600 Kbps = 200 KBps
Upload: 384 Kbps = 48 KBps

B = byte
b = bit

Hope that helps.

second the cable opinion. I just called comcast. They gave me cable(internet) for mere 24.95 for 4 months with free installation. DSL can't beat that

BTW: Verizon requires you to get telephone service from them before they allow you to get theirDSL Service. Sort of sucks when I have Vonage.

Yeah I wanted to cancel my local phone service and just keep Verizon DSL also (I use vonage too) but as of this time they can't do that where I live. Supposedly they are starting to offer that option in other areas to retain customers switching over to cell phone only or VoIP. Eventually it should make it to our areas also.

For now I just told them to go to a measured rate line on the analog phone portion, which is only about 11.00 a month. I shut off all extra services too of course. So instead of about 42 bucks a month for phone service it is now 11.00 + 14.95 (vonage) = 25.95 or so. (approximate...there is a few bucks taxes)

So at least I am saving some money and no longer pay any long distance charges either.

I work for tech support with Verizon DSL (this is my last week though) give me your dsl number and I'll check how far you are tomorrow. You may get different numbers because there are a few different tests the techs can run and none of them are 100% accurate but are what we go on.[/quote]

Not being racist or anything, but do you happen to be black? Everytime I call, it's always some black person who picks up. Last time I called for an upgrade yesterday, a girl called latisha(obviously black name), with the accent picked up...

So this guy is trying to help you out and you want to know if he is black?! wtf:roll:

Technically speaking, you don't have to have a working voice telephone line. The DSL signal goes through to your house if you have it hooked up at the local Connection Office, reguardless of if you have an actual voice line or not.

I know this for a fact, because once my voice line with the DSL service on it got disconnected (I'm terrible for paying bills on time) and my DSL service still worked for a few more weeks before a tech made it down to the CO to manually d/c the hookup. They make you buy the voice line because they want the money, plain and simple. I don't think Verizon wants the average person to know that you don't need an actual voice line for DSL to work.

Have to be within so many feet (<12000 I think) and have ATM instead of frame relay, but they'll check it all out for you.

Double your bandwidth for $10 a month or so...

:brokenheart: Just call Rep, not available in W. PA.

Just recieved my upgrade. It took 5 weeks, because they had lost the original order, at the C.O.

But now have the upgrade, and I'm very happy.

Just received my upgrade. Only $10 more, for a total of $45/month. Overall I must say I'm pretty happy with it. Only took them 24 hours to take care of it too.

I spoke to Verizon DSL billing yesterday, told I was one of the few who was eligible for upgrade to 3.0/768 at no extra charge. I live in Northern Virginia. I'm currently paying $29.95. Upgrade supposed to be activated within 48 hours. I'm going to be reviewing my bills carefully to see if I stay at $29.95 after activation.

can anyone confirm that verizon dsl is still blocking port 80? i'm thinking of switching from comcast to verizon, but if verizon is still blocking port 80, i'm sticking with comcast.

So how does your bill look? Any change in the charges? If not, exactly what was the reason for the free speed upgrade for NOVA? I am in Springfield and would love an increase in speed without an increase in fee.

If they were to block port 80 that would be that your browsing would stop. People should really think about what they are saying before they say it.

I think his point is that they are blocking port 80 inbound. Kind of a pain in the butt if you want to put up a web server. I have to use a dns redirecting service that basically serves up a frame from their server on port 80 and then points within that frame to my server on port 81.
So, as far as I can tell, yes, they are still blocking inbound port 80.

WOOOHOOO... I am eligible for the 3.0/784 upgrade and so is my gf. No need to pay additional fee too. The CS told me everyone in the 718 area code are eligible.

Just got upgraded to 3.0/768... I'm in new jersey (856).

I was paying 34.95 for 1.5/128 and since I qualify for the "new york metro area" (even though i'm an hour away from there), I get a free wireless router/modem and now pay 29.95/month.

Thanks OP!

So is this bump available for free to all customers in the DC metro area, or just NoVa?
