This doesn't impact everyone, but if your local cable vendor is comcast or AT&T there have been stories that cable modem charges are going up and are likely to be sold by comcast on a "tiered" basis - e.g. you pay so much for so much bandwidth.
Comcast has already reduced Usenet downloads, as well as website and email MB. There are also credible stories that they will shortly be increasing their cable (data) prices.
Still, it might be a better deal than DSL...
They recently added Comcast Pro 3.5Mbps/384Kbps for $90 a month (plus modem I think).
They also recently increased the CAP from 1.5 to 1.8 on the normal lines (Power cycle your modem).
As for the price increase.. I have only heard of a price jump for those not on Comcast Cable TV. I am one of those. The proposed increase is from $45+$5 to $55+$5. Some people are already paying the $55. They have a price range of 45-55 for non cable TV customers on their website..
My pings have recently gone up a bit (nothing to complain about yet though). I assume it is because of the jump to 1.8 on the cap.
I have some packet loss on the line, and other people I know with comcast have the same problems. If/When mine jumps to $60 I will order Verizon DSL's 1.5/128 package for $59.99 and the modem is mine...
