I have Verizon DSL and it's satisfactory, but not great. I have used AT&T Cable before and it was much much faster, but that was also because it was in the Middle of No Where, Ohio, so not many of my neighbors were sucking up bandwidth (cable speeds are dependent on how many subscribers there are).

Basically, it's pretty dependent on where you live. My DSL service in Pittsburgh has been a pretty constant 768 bps (~100 kb/s dl speed), but that's capped and doesn't go any higher, whereas with the cable modem in Ohio I got up to 300 kb/s when the connection was good and no one else was on.

Bottom Line: I would get cable over DSL if they had it here, but you may want to check on someone who has cable near you to see how much near saturation point they are around you.

If my area had cable, I would go for it. However, my connection, Verizon DSL, has not gone done since I started my service which is almost 2 years. I'm paying a pretty hefty price though, $50 a month for basic DSL.

the age old belief that cable speed is dependent upon the amount of people within the area is becoming a thing of the past. Cable operators make the necessary adjustments to see that everyone has a very decent speed. They care very much about speed saturation. At least they do here in NYC.

I have Verizon DSL and called a week ago to see what they could do for existing customers. I was told I would receive $50 compensation, in the form of a check. Last week I got a "thank you" note stating that I would receive 1 month free for staying with them. The only other option I was given to participate in this deal was to cancel and renew. I was told to expect a couple of weeks before I was back online.

Not true anymore, most cable comapnies are now capping everyone at 1.5mbit down/128k up no matter how many people are near you....

You know 128K is such a meager upload speed for the average price these DSL providers are charging :| I once called Verizon to complain about this and they had me speak to some head honcho guy who just pretty much gave me the proverbial finger. Whatever...

Anyway, for those of you interested in getting 768Kbps-1.1Mbsp upload speeds, speakeasy.net offers some nice packages...still kind of expensive though, but way cheaper than going business class SDSL with the other carriers.

I've been using Verizon DSL for 18months with about 2-3 downtime for only couple hours. Very happy with it, very stable. I don't wanna try cable since I have no problem with Verizon DSL. One more thing that if your Verizon DSL speed below 500kbs, just contact them and they'll try to fix it.

I just recently moved back to Verizon DSL after having used Covad for a while.

I like Verizon, had 2 or 3 downtimes of a couple of hours when I had it the first time around. Not been down since I moved back, so I can't complain. Big selling point for me is their excellent news server. If you are using the news server heavily, this deal will be even sweeter as there is no cap and the retention is pretty good.

Wish I had known about the rebate thru Staples, but, too late for me now, got the GC though.

Eh, it all depends on the provider. In Irvine, the college community, my friends subscribed to cable modems and their connections were total crap anytime but the wee hours of the morning (i.e. 1 am - 7 am).

I should tell my dad about this... nah. I tried for 3 months to get him to get DSL, but he would rather pay $5 extra per month for dial-up AOL (because they pay for a different phone line too). Don't ask me why...

Oh well, I have Verizon DSL where I live and it's great. Never had a speed higher than 90kb/s but it's stable and always at that speed, so it's fine for me. Also, if you use Usenet a lot, they carry most of the newsgroups out there, and store files for at least 10 days. They are also good for gaming, I can get 40-50 ping on many servers, with 4 of my roomates playing on the same server.

when does this deal expire??? i'm on the 2nd month of my Covad plan and only 2 months left until the rate changes from 21.95 to 39. Covad is ok but my max constant dl has been 40kb and there are numerous times where i've been down for a few hours
