Verizon dsl only provides dynamic ip address which is useless. You can't host your web site. :|

What DSL I have? I have verizon DSL and Verizon as an ISP and it's an always on connection for me. I never had to install any software for it to start working. My modem is not a router/modem combo, just a simple westell dsl modem. The moment windows started up and initialized networking ect. I can use the internet. The only thing I need my user name and password for is to check mail in Outlook Express.
ok that explains a lot. I know for sure that my internet DOESN'T work if I don't log on when my computer boots up and a username and password is need somewhere while it's logging in. I have tried playing around with the network settings in windows but nothing on the network works if it's internet related unless I'm logged in.

I just installed everything... seems to run fine... Until: I had kazaa downloading in the background... left computer running while I was away... came back 20 minutes later and it disconnected. This happened a couple of times so I called customer service (which i think is quite courteous), and they told me that there's a clause on the agreement that lets them disconnect u after 15 minutes of idle time. :|:frown: How can we get around that? That really stinks. I'm running win2k pro. Can anyone suggest a solution?

That explains it I guess. I have Verizon DSL for like 3 months now so I might very well got it before they dumped DHCP service. In that case it really sucks for you guys who are just signing up. Having to connect to use internet and getting disconnected after 15 minutes? Crap, I would get cable in that case. Hell, I'm thinking of getting cable anyway and I got it good from Verizon. Cable from AT$T: $50 Bandwidth: 1.5/256, same price, twice as much bandwidth.

For Verizon DSL, if you get:
Fujitsu Speedport modem = PPPoE, must login to access the 'net.
Westell modem = no login necessary, "always on".
Has anyone experienced anything to the contrary?

Hmm, I've seen some people got some sort of compensation even though they're current customers, well, yesterday I called them up about it and the guy is like: NO, I can't do anything for you, you're a current customer and this promotion is for new customers. I couldn't get anywhere with him.

Thanx for the tip! Today I called them up and I'm like:
ME: I want cancel my account
CSR: Is there any reason why?
ME: Well, it's a bit too pricey for me right now.
CSR: Would it help you if we put you on a 29.95/month for six months promotional plan?
ME: Well...... [pretending like I'm really spending some time thinking about it] HELL YEAH, BABY, SIGN ME UP. (ok, so last part wasn't exactly like that but you get the idea )
So yeah, another satisfied Verizon customer, but I don't have to deal with login and bein disconnected after idling for 15 minutes crap. Get good pings in games. Over the last 3-4 months only several times that I noticed that DSL was down for couple hours. Other than that, it's good, would be even better if it was 1.5/256 though, and I live like 800 feet from OC so I can get some insane bandwidth if I wanted to.
Now all I'm waiting for is for AT$T to start their promotions like early this year where they offered $20/month for six months of something like that. I would be all over that.

Damn I want to do that but what would you say if your bluff failed and instead of "Would it help you if we put you on a 29.95 plan," they said "Ok we will cancel your account right now?"
Someone tell me a good counter if the CSR won't call my bluff and maybe I'll try it. As of right now I'm too scared
Verizon uses the PPPoE protocol and forces you to load this cr@p software on your machine. Unlike the cable set-up software, which is useless but unintrusive, this program can impact system and program stability. Ideally do not install it, but use a DSL gateway firewall router to sign on permanently, then you do not need the software at all.
