I don't see any way to create these e-mail addresses, and the primary e-mail address I was assigned to is a cryptic jumble of letters and numbers.

You should be able to do it on the web. Keep also in mind that you can change alias for your primary e-mail address. Alias is like a secondary name to your e-mail address and it's pretty cool, for example, you could give out your real e-mail address (the cryptic part like you said) to your business contacts and use alias for that email for opening account the web like this board ect. and when your alias ends up on spam lists all you have to do is change it and you're good to go again. Or in your case if you don't like cryptic e-mail, you can make it meaninfull with an alias, it will look just like an ordinary verizon e-mail address except it will point to your primary e-mail addres, so basically two e-mail address for one e-mail, and one of those you can change to whatever you like. Look for a web page where you have to log in for member services, I think it should all be there.

There's login for member services at http://start.verizon.net/
You can view your invoices, check your e-mail for your primary e-mail account (the auto-assigned one), and change your alias. No option to create additional e-mail accounts though. Verizon does specifically advertise 4 e-mail addresses per DSL account.

Yeah, You don't have to install any crap software in order to get the service. Get a login/password from their web dslreg.bellatlantic.net
The best way after that is using a router.

If you're one of those who got a Westell DSL modem and don't need to log in with a user/pass through PPPoE, your username/password for e-mail and newsgroup access is already provided on a welcome letter that comes with the installation kit.

I got a Westell modem; but I already installed the crap software...

How can I not use the software, since it requires logging in and stuff? (sorry, new to broadband).

Also, I tried tweaking according to dslreports.com but it's still very slow... faster than 56k, but i clocked it around 150k... that sucks for broadband. Especially since I'm paying for 768/128.

My distance from a CO is rather far.. i think that's the problem.

For the money, I guess it's still a good deal. I was paying $6 a month for dial up, but with this I can leave it on all the time....

I've never used a PPPoE modem before, and I was wondering about this "logging out" business. I am using a Linksys 8 Port router, and I believe there is a "keep alive" option, and I was wondering if that would keep my connection alive at a times, or if that wasn't good enough. I'm basically about to switch to Verizon, only if I can have a live connection at all times, without any delay. Thanks

their support sucks. my DSL has been going up and down for the last 3 weeks and no one will give me a reason. It's not a hardware problem, its a billing issue. Then they tried to charge me double the amount. my modem was up and running since last wednesday but come monday evening, i have a message on my machine telling me my modem will be operational by Jan 20th and i look at my modem and the stupid light is blinking green. I'm real close to switching to cable modem

I currently use Verizon DSL right now and am quite dissatisfied. It took us 3 months to get our DSL working initially (of course, they tried charging us for that). It has gone down for weeks at a time and they say it should be working (they tried charging us for that as well). When it does work, it wasn't fast enough so we upgraded our service to the 1.5Mbps down package, it still sucks.

Also, if you're considering getting DSL from another company instead of Verizon, ask them who they contract their DSL lines out to. It appears that Verizon does about 80% of all DSL in the US even though most of it is contracted from other companies.

Best thing is to ask around your neighborhood and see what high speed services they're happy with.
VerizonDSL is excellent in my area.

Same here ! I never got any bill from Verizon, but I just saw that they have happily charged my card for $29 + taxes... but nothing about the $25 mastercard. And I guess the $80 rebate will have to be submitted with copies of three months' reciepts. !

You can't get the $80 rebate without submitting 3 months worth of bills... did you do that?

I use Verison DSL, don't really have too much trouble(i work as tech support -_-). Thier tech support is dumb and takes a while to get a the phone especially when there is some problem on thier end. I've had service for over 2 years and been up 99% of the times (even during brown outs thanx to my ups). I'm still paying $39.95 per month which is the price way back then when you had to get 1 year contract, by the price has never changed for me. The speed is also very constant, unlike cable which can slow down at peak times. Still probabaly slower than most cable service for the same price, but i'm too lazy to switch. I get 195Kb/16Kb up which is enough for me

Best buy also have the same promotion but they'll give you a $100 gift card if you signup at the bestbuy store (But make sure that your order is online from a bestbuy store). The gift card only work if your order is online but make out from a bestbuy store.

$29.95 for 1st 6 months after is $49.95
1st month free
FREE $100 best buy gift card by mail in rebate (Expire 3-01-03)

I ordered at bestbuy store and then called verizon to get the acct number in order to send in your rebate to receive the gift card. Make sure you call verizon to check on the order because they messed up my order by $29.95 for the first 3 months. I have to fax them my order confirmation paper that Bestbuy printed out for me and fax it to them so they changed back to free first month and $29.95 afterward for the next 5 months. The connection is not that fast 768Kpbs but very reliable so far.

Well, I ordered back in December...

Here's the jimmy:
I'm used to 2m/384k Time Warner cable, so 768k/128k is a bit of a hit - but I'll survive, especially since speed is ALWAYS as advertised.
I've got a Westell modem - I still have to "log in" using PPPoE authentication - but - this was interesting. I didn't have a CD rom in my computer, or a floppy, or a net connection to one that did. I called up Verizon, they said "sorry, can't help...", I said "Not even running WinXP", CSR said "Oh, that was my next question, let's log you in..."
I use a Linksys Router, so logging in isn't an issue with me anyway - but I can tell you that you DO occasionally get logged off, not often, but occasionally (when idle only).
I *did* get the $25 Mastercard.
I still haven't been "billed" for DSL service on my bill, not explicitly at least. My first bill did have an extra service charge, but only $16...

I miss the speed that cable gives especially with the price being the same. But this isn't bad especially since you have to pay a fortune just to get cable into your house.

Verizon does not give you 10 MB of disk space for a personal site either, do they ?

My friend has them for his dsl and we could not get onto the ftp site. The official line is that they don't support it.

The requirement for the rebate is to stick with the service for 6 months. But for submission, they only want the first 3 months.

How long did it take to get the letter about your $25 MC? It's been over a month and I haven't heard anything about it.

As for whether you need to log in or not, how it works in my area is that if your phone lines are Verizon and you have Verizon DSL, no need to log in. If your phone lines are Verizon and you go with any other provider (AOL, Earthlink, etc.), you need to log in through PPPoE.

What did you have to do to get the $25 MasterCard ? I started on Jan 9th, but haven't gotten any package/paperwork from Verizon ?

What do I need to do to get the $25 Rebate MasterCard ?

Thanks
