Verizon Edge Questions

My gf's father was asking me the other day (since I'm such a gadget gear) about Verizon Edge. I have zero experience with Verizon, but I've done my reading about AT&T Next last year when I switched my family over.

So currently, they pay $240 or whatever on a legacy family plan of 4 for 4gb of data pooled.

From what I read about Edge, you get 10 gb for $80 + $15 per line, coming out to $140, which is a significant cut.

Now I remember AT&T allowed people to jump over to Next even though they had just gotten a nice subsidized smartphone via 2 year contract. I got a 5S last year and they let me switch over for a discount.

The question I have is that her family currently has 3 phones eligible for an upgrade. Is it possible to use the upgrades, and then switch over to Edge for discounted monthly pricing?

I realize that in the future, they will need to cough up money for an installment plan for future phone upgrades.

Nope. They wont let you use NEXT unless you are close to paying off your two year contract phone. Probably safer to go to a store and ask an employee, you can always try it and then return the phones and do the edge thing. If Verizon has a return window.

Edge is pointless if you have a legacy plan. You will be paying more on a legacy plan if you use edge. Edge is designed to force people to switch the pooled data plans as its cheaper. However all the cost of the device is pushed towards you, the customer.

ATT let me go to next a year after upgrade. I didn't because I have unlimited but...

Yes there are some stipulations when you can switch I don't know the details. I was allowed to switch also about 6 months or so before my two years were up.

Edge is simply a device financing plan. You'll pay the same full price of the phone over the 24 months, and that's it. It's not some special non-subsidy pricing ripoff if you look at it properly

I'd still move towards the 10GB ($80) + $15/line model ($140)... For those people who want' to upgrade, it'll be ~$20-$30/month extra per line (iPhone 6 is $27/month)

If they are happy with there phones and want the more everything plan they can keep there phones and get the credits to get the price you showed above.

AT&T let people switch back in Feb. That was what.. 5 months after I bought the 5S subsidized?

Yeah I'm not sure either which is why I was asking since AT&T users were allowed to switch while under contract.

I guess I'm wondering if they can take advantage of the upgrade on the legacy plan because they have been paying all this time to get subsidized pricing and THEN switch to the new plan? Shrug. I guess we'll go to the store tomorrow to find out.

Looks like the discount only comes IF you do Edge, meaning you have to buy a phone? I'm confused. I guess this is because AT&T has the same price whether you BYOD or use Next.

Yes they will. I've done it on both of our phones while moving to different phones. My wife's phone was close to end of contract and I did hers online as the option to do so was in front of me. I went into the store to inquire about mine thinking it couldn't be done and was told although it wasn't available to me through their website, it could be done in store.

To the OP, my suggestion would be to have him check at a Verizon store. Go with him if it will make him feel more comfortable.
