Syosset, Long Island is now piloting this service. Should be available Island-Wide by 2006.

well im sure they only going to spend the money to install them where they know people are going to have the money to pay it. when i lived in sacramento for 2 years in 99 they had just installed the fiber lines. sacramento is a much UPPER CLASS city than most places ive ever seen and everyone there had it. it was 10mbps. i shelled out the extra dough cus i couldnt resist the speed. now im back home in LA and all i have is adelphia cable. so i guess all of us that dont live in high class places are ganna have to wait forever to get something like this

The GOOD news here is that they intend to start work on it soon.
Yay!

Boo!

What I find interesting about this is that coaxial broadband hasn't even been completely tapped yet. Comcast is holding back on its subscribers. I have a friend of mine doing some technology work in japan right now. Typical residential cable connections are 30/5.

Whenever a subsciber base becomes threatened by verizon you can bet comcast will be performing a preemptive router infrastructure upgrade in the region. If they don't.. they will have to lower prices significantly for there to be any incentive to stay.

Japan doesn't have the same population scope the US has, and it's been my observation that a lot of the communication infrastructure in Asia is above-ground, lending to much easier upgrading. But yeah - in Korea, there are 100Mbps connections that may double for TV service in a year or so.

The only thing I can surmise is the landmass and population densities mean setting up something similar in the US is much more difficult than setting up something better in Asia.

here is a good site to check out news on Verizon FiOS. This link goes specifically to the Florida map but you can check out all the states status with it.

Yep.. THe little bastards dug up my lawn and the entire neighborhood about 2 weeks ago.. They are pretty agressive with it here. It's not ready yet - but I will definately be a guinea pig.

Just got the letter early last week and a follow up call on my answering machine Friday. Guess I'll call and see what the install schedule looks like. Appears as though they need CAT5 from the outside box to the router at the primary PC.

My hope is that I will finally be able to unbond my phone service, install FIOS, and LNP my number to my Verizon cell phone. It will cost less than $10 more for the FIOS and save me $40 on my phone bill by dropping service in my home.

Yeah it said something about cat5 on their website. Thats not that hard though, in my case they already used CAT5 for all interior phone wiring (which is smart). The advantages of living in a brand new house

Keep us updated if you can, I'm very interested in hearing your experiance.

Called this morning. Install date of 1/28 with a 4 hour install time. Apparently the local trucks will pull the fiber to the house before the installer arrives and they will install a new phone box to replace the existing copper wire box. They install a battery backup to power the unit should there be an outage so there has to be 110 in proximity to where you want to place the inside unit. They will run CAT5e to one PC included in the install and had an option for a free router but I already have a linksys in place.

Guess it is time to look in to a wireless network finally... Now that I think about it the rep did say they would disconnect my POTS line. My bet is they will use the old copper wire to pull the CAT5. Hey, I can do that too! Aww, lets get real. Wireless it is. Better buzz over to the forsale forum now.

1 day before the quoted install day 6 guys came and pulled cable under the driveway and to the side where the pots box is. The next day 2 guys came and installed the ont and Battery Backup.

6 guys= 2~6hours
2 guys=2~unkown

My house was wired completely with cat5 and our wireless router is in the attic. They said my install was the smoothest ever and couldn't thank me enough. HA

A couple miles from my house in Ellicott City, Maryland they're putting in all new Fiber. Supposedly by next month they'll have this service as well.

Got the call today from the fiber subcontractor. Need to confirm a date when the back yard will be unlocked.

Muadib, I'm in TX.

I'll be interested to see how they price video service. I understand they will be offering video at the beginning of Q2 and are training the sales staff on that shortly. Frankly I don't miss my small dish, but it would be nice if they offered something like the Dish package where you could purchase individual channels.

Got a Comcast flyer a few days ago with large print offering $29.95 internet, phone and TV service for a year. Small(er) print clarified that was per service. For a moment I was ready to cancel my FIOS order.
