Update:

Contractor marked installation route on Thursday and dropped the fiber optic cable in yesterday (Friday). Interestingly enough the fiber optic cable has a bonded copper wire for detection purposes.

Massapequa is also getting fiber. According to a friend who pulls cable for Verizon both Syossett and Massapequa were considered "bad" co's with lots of problematic copper so they are upgrading these two co's first in this area.

Wisconsin needs optical fiber. Last time I checked, Madison is soon to become a "wireless" city, and whoever lands the contract for all the Wi-Fi hotspots will be rolling in cash. Optical fiber's main advantage over, say, T1, is that the signal can be carried more than five times the distance without a repeater of some sort.
That, and the fact that I want 3x the speed of my current (cable) connection, for about the same price.

They probably have to dig up your infrastructure in order to lay the FO.
I say, "Hand me the jack-hammer!" (However, Concast is installing upgrades for free to 4000/384 (I think it's 384)
as soon as they complete the equipment upgrade in the respective areas.
I'll go from 3000/256 to the 4k plan for free. And 5000/768 (I think it's 768) if I want to pay extra.

RideFree -

Strangely enough my cousin is a general contractor in FL where they are installing FIOS, and yes they are "nicking" all sorts of other infrastructure on a daily basis. In the last few months when they were working around here I have noticed the need to reset the clock on my microwave every few weeks and my water went all chugga-chugga once too.

If it gets above 40 in the next few days I'll take a spin on my LittleWing and see how many people are actually getting it installed in my neighborhood. Should be pretty easy to tell by the paint markers. Honestly, other than the fact that there is allot of development in my area I don't understand why this is a FIOS test market. The demographic wouldn't seem to support significant adoption, but I could be wrong. I signed up for the 5000/2000 which was the low threshold offering...

The reason why hillsborough county is a test market is simple. It used to be GTE market and although Verizon is installing some of their own fiber, there was fiber that GTE laid back in the day. Also we have a very high middle class rate which are the majorities for services along the lines of tv, phone, and internet.

Hey Avalon, stop that!!! I live in Palm Beach Co, I'm a Boca Butt. I think we oughta get it first.

Seriously, I have Bellsouth 3Mps (actually 2.5Mps). I had a guy come out and check my place and got into a nice conversation with him, also a computer guy. He said this was as good as I could expect. I am over 18,000ft from the station, BUT they ran fiber very close and they connect to the house with copper. Bellsouth has plans to update to higher speed DSL and are piloting now he said. Here's a link. Give me a pair of 12Mps lines, uhhhhhhhh. Drool starting to form, must stop now.

Got it installed today. Not surprisingly the Verizon test verified the 5/2. Ran a couple at DSL Reports and that pretty much confirmed the speed.

So far surfing the web it is really snappy. Newsgropups appear to be limited at the server

Anyone have a suggestion on a friskey news server provider?

*Edit* Just switched my profile to 500 topics and 500 messages per page... wow.

I actually had a chance to play around with this service. The infrastructure is already in place throughout parts of California, it's just not "available" yet.

The speeds were pretty much a consistent 13Mb/s downstream, and roughly 1.7Mb/s upstream. Pretty impressive, I must say.

Then again, if you put it all in perspective, this will be the first time speeds have jumped enough that people will actually have a reason to replace a 10Mb/s network card.

Guess I'll finally have to cough up the $15.00.

Venom:

What part of HB are you in? I have availability at my office on Algonquin, but no availability at my house on Brookhurst/Adams.
