wow ... I wouldn't care that much, but the whole "it costs .$15 per text message whether you have a text messaging package or not thing is bullshlt.

this may be a case where I switch providers. my gf and I need new phones right now too, so maybe we can just leave verizon all together, although their service is very reliable.

This is bullsh!t, verizon already has ridiculous restrictions. I'm switching to Cingulair after my contact is up.... it just sucks because they have the best coverage around here.

in the article, you can switch without paying the cancellation fees.

Heh, doesn't affect me I guess since I have a plan that covers unlimited In Texting and up to 500 other text messages for $15 a month.

That's what engadget says.. there's no telling what Verizon would do.

Cingular also is raising their SMS PPU rates to $0.15/message. Quite a scam too right before the American Idol season and a sneaky way of trying to get you to sign up for their SMS packages.
You'd think as technology advances prices will go down but it's quite the opposite.

What's also BS is that it's that price to recieve a message. IMO, the text messaging should be free as a "thank you for not wasting bandwidth" feature.

Hey, didn't google have a way to send text messages over the internet, or isn't there some other site that does it?

A couple of us at work were just talking about that the other day. "In network" calling is free, but texting isn't? You tell me which one is more of a constraint on their networks.

The ability for phone companies to continuously invent ways to milk money out of people is crazy. Hell, even if you download a song from Verizon for $2(twice what iTunes charges) you only get to keep it for a year. After that you pay a $2 per song renewal fee.

The parents of teenagers who are texting addicts are going to have a heart attack when they see their phone bills come in.

You have to anyway, unless you sign up for a texting plan.

This is so stupid. Just another example of how some corporations screw us over every day so they can give their CEOs a raise. Sure I can switch to another provider but Verizion has the best coverage in my area. Same with our cable company, only one in the area and they can charge us whatever they want.

Spare me the "Oh but your welcome to not pay and deal without" bullsh!t

That's only for "foreign" carriers, also known as international texts. Get much texts from people in Europe?

If you don't have a text package/bundle, you pay anyway. Your rates are now going up. The text bundles are going to start looking cheaper and cheaper.

And if anybody thinks I'm going to let them out of a contract because text rates are going up, well, think again. VZW, like all carriers reserve the right to change your contract at any time, it's right there if you bothered to read the contract. If they give you notice (which we do, it's on your bill, again if you bothered to read past the "amount due" line), they can legally change your contract pretty much at any time.

OOOOOhhhh okay

I was thinking by "foreign" they meant "outside of verizon" ... if it just means international, then I don't care. I pay the extra $5/mo extra for the 250 messages as is.

I agree that they lock their phones down way too much, but other than that, is there anything else horrible about them?

<shrug> I'm a relatively captive audience. Verizon is the only carrier that comes close to working well in my area, and in most other areas that I travel to. They probably know that their network is more valuable to me (and many others) than even 2x the price I'm currently paying. Their coverage is infinitely more valuable to me than a phone. I'd rather a crappy phone work well than a wonderful phone not work, or work poorly.

And for everyone else, it didn't take me long to find this link, and it may explain things somewhat clearer for you:
